Newb question on Quest Choice

By Nostromo, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Overall, I never really liked the 'choose' a quest as the campaign 'map' mechanic but whatever--not really the focus of this topic.

I am starting a new campaign next week (not sure which one yet) but I don't understand WHY there is a choice for the winner of the previous quest to choose the next quest.

What choice is to be made? Yes, I understand literally what the choice is--you choose quest A or quest B for the next quest. But are some quests better for the overlord and other quests better for the heroes? You can't really tell at first glance of the quests.

It seems like it would really require people to be REALLY familiar with the game to choose the right quest. I mean maybe I missed it somewhere but are some quests better than others for one particular side? My point: lets say I start a new campaign and I, as the overlord, fail the first quest--that means my heroes choose which quest to play next. Lets say they are all new or learning descent--how do they decide? Do they really need to read both quests and then choose one? As new players should they just pick randomly? Do they look at quest rewards? What do I tell them on HOW to pick the next quest. In fact, I am pretty familiar with Descent, and I don't even know what to look for.

I think I am missing something. Can someone give me a cheat sheet or quick rundown on how you determine whether a quest is better for one side or the other--or what you are looking for when you 'choose' the next quest.

Thanks for the help!

Do they really need to read both quests and then choose one? Do they look at quest rewards?

Mostly this. That's the benefit of choosing. You pick whatever goes better for your team. If you're not actually sure what is better in terms of balance, just pick whatever you feel better thematically, and gradually you'll get used to the mechanics and in the future you will learn how to read when a quest is better or not for your party (because the difficulty meter depends strongly on the heroes/classes chosen, Overlord deck, etc)

If you're not sure about this, just don't struggle too much, I'd say. Have fun with whatever you pick on your first go, and if you repeat campaign, just take whatever you didn't the last time.

Aside from rewards, the early campaigns (shadow rune and labyrinth of ruin) really had the potential for different stories based on what was picked. In the shadow rune, the act 1 quests determined the availability of quests in act 2. In labyrinth of ruin, the first pick determined which ally accompanied the heroes for the rest of the campaign.

There is no need to overthink it, as has been said- just pick a quest that looks fun, and next time around pick a different one.

Ok, thanks for the quick response guys! Appreciate it!

The campaign tracker by Atom4ageVampire has an overview of winning/losing sides per quest. And that shows that some quests are indeed Hero or OL favored. I tell newer players to look for a reward they want, it gives some meaning to the outcome. Or just what looks/sounds fun.

Atom4geVampire (or AtomAgeVampire) ;)

But I was about to post the same thing :P You can find the exact page here: http://d2etracker.com/stats_quests.php

Or you can find it for your relevant quest choice when selecting the next quest if you use the tracker :)

When looking at which quests to choose next, my group looks at the number of monster groups that will be in play, the type of monsters that will be on the board, are there any lieutenants in play, special rules, etc...as well as the rewards.

That is one of the reasons all the information is open in Descent... so you can make an informed choice.
