FFG official acrylic tokens?

By Red 7, in X-Wing

Is there any whispering and/or talk about FFG putting out acrylic tokens for sale?

I see that they put them out in limited quantities at tournaments, but for those of us that are not tournament players it is a little disappointing that that is the only way to get them.

It seems like there is a huge demand for acrylic tokens and movement rulers if all of the independent retailers are any indication.

So why is FFG passing up on this seemingly no brainer money maker?

Any thoughts?

A while back lots of people were clamouring for official FFG play mats

FFG made official play mats

Then stated that the only play mats that were legal for tournament play were official FFG ones

Lots of people went nuts

Be careful what you wish for

But the cardboard one would still be official FFG products too.....right?

Ewww, cardboard tokens. Don't be gross.

The issue would be that all the third party ones, Team Covenant and others, might get disqualified if FFG produces their own for retail sale. People wanted FFG Mats, FFG made Mats, then said only FFG Mats are legal at tournies.

To be fair, there's a massive difference between the FFG mats situation, and FFG making tokens. The ruling on only official mats being tournament legal was to stop people from bringing their own mats with known distance markers on them, therefore giving that player an unfair advantage over an opponent in judging distances for movement or shooting. Even then, it's only enforced at the high levels, as local and even regional tournaments often don't actually have enough official mats to cover every pairing.

Saying "only FFG tokens would be legal" is pretty much just rubbish scaremongering.

They may yet make some, but I wouldn't bet on it being soon. Acrylics are always laser cut, and then either laser detailed or sublimated. Those processes are tough to do en masse, but for things like prize support (FFG) or custom orders (third party), it's a lot easier to fulfill. It wouldn't shock me if they were looking into it though.

I'm ambivalent, and yet... let's assume they sell acrylic tokens.

What do they do for prizes, once the tokens are simply worth money?

I get the desire, but I also kinda like them as a mechanics-free prize that's still passingly useful.

Different colours? Never underestimate the allure of the shiny thing, even if you have something almost identical to it anyway. I mean, isn't that exactly what alt-art cards are about?

I think a simple solution is to have the tournament kits as they are, and then at the end of the season- or end of the year FFG could sell some sort of Year in Review Bundle. Not only would it be a cool gift, but it could potentially devalue the 3rd party market for the kits (which I'm sure FFG isn't a fan of). The end of the year pack would give the competitive players ample time to show off their spoils, but also help to satisfy the collectors who can't make it to every tournament (or are learning to fly better). A year in review pack could also give FFG a chance to show off how cool the last year was, with articles, news- you know, the Internet...

And if this idea doesn't work, you can just head over to eBay...

There's enough high quality third party tokens out there that I don't think there's much of a demand for official FFG tokens. The best thing about so many custom tokens out there is that it makes it less likely for someone to be using the same exact tokens that you are.

There were so many acrylics starting to pop up when I decided to get some third party ones, I asked the company if they'd make them out of wood for me, instead. It was the most surefire way to know which tokens/templates were mine, and which weren't. I mean, who else takes wooden tokens into a space game?

I still think that it would be cool if FFG put out there own tokens, and i'm pretty sure that even people with third party products would buy them.

Metal tokens and templates!

Why would I need harder, heavier, noisier tokens when the ones that came with the game work perfectly well?

...provided no one spills anything on them, of course.

and i'm pretty sure that even people with third party products would buy them.

It's not like the FFG tokens are better than the AP or TC tokens, in some ways the 3rd party ones are better like AP's mirrored shield tokens. It makes sense to replace cardboard with acrylic but it doesn't make sense to replace acrylic with other acrylics.

Also FFG has said that they don't want to get into the token business, they want their tokens to be rewards for winning events like store championships or other local events.

Maybe someone can set me straight, but aren't they kind of in bed with Team Covenant who sells tokens?

Who FFG? No they're not. TC does a lot of interviews with FFG staff at major events, but they do that with lots of other games as well.

i'd rather they didnt. FFG currently simply cannot ban acrylics because they dont offer anything outside the cheap cardboard craptastic things that warp, bend, take on water, etc etc. The reason they dont allow custom art cards is because they SELL those things. We get the templates they offer whether we want them or not so they are only hurting themselves by not letting us take 3rd party ones and gaining literally nothing: unless they make their own acrylics, then they can and it would piss off a LOT of people.

Given what happened with the whole mat situation i doubt they'd do that again. FFG may be a business and money is always a priority otherwise business goes down, but they dont seem to like pissing people off. Unlike GW

FFG would make money from their own acrylics but only by default because everyone HAS to get them, even if they already had a nice set. Sour money from customers isnt good money, especially when its borderline $100 sour money.

Team Covenant also assists with their streaming.
