Squad Cards: why not?

By brettspielcafe, in X-Wing

"Is my whole squad's synergy worth more than an extra ship".

IMHO, this would be exactly the point. I would love to see more ship-to-ship synergy in the game, a la Attanni Mindlink. But squad cards make it limited to a single ship type, and ideally, facing 2 x-wing builds with different squad cards would equate to different engagements.

I would enjoy a squad card or "directive" card that influence whole squads. The Magic geek in me like Squad cards because the have the ideas of tribal decks (my favourite kind) in them, but might bring more swarm like lists instead of diversity.

Are there any serious tier-1 competitive swarms except for TIE? Nothing for scum anyway. (Once in a blue moon you may see a 5-A or Z-95 list out there).

I see repeated success with Feedback Swarms. They're not the easiest to fly, but I don't know if even Jumpmasters have a lot of defensive trump cards against that much firepower and general chaos.

Skyhamma Annihilashun Foce! Kost: 10 - because this is the Imperium of Man, *******!

Treat all your Pilots as having PS 13. During the Deployment Phase you may deploy in the opposing players deployment zone, or anywhere within R1 of their ships. At the beginning of each round assign each of your ships a focus token.

Oh, or how about an X-Wing fix in the form of a Squad Card?

X-Wingovore Swarm. Kost: 0 (You must equip a 1pt Unique Astromech on each X-Wingovore in the squad)

X-Wings cost 15 less to purchase. Add the boost, barrel roll, evade, cloak & decloak, SLAM, rotate arc, and synapse actions to your action bar.

...

I'm pretty sure I've got a Sisters Sororitas one about B-WIngs getting minus two hull and plus four shields if I really try.

I like the idea of thematic Squad cards, but not for reducing the cost of ships. That's just uncreative thinking.

PS: and no, they should not be restricted by a ship type, but instead promote some interesting interactions between different ships and pilots.

I had been thinking of something similar, but this seems like a really good idea, easy to implement, easy-ish to keep balanced, and a fantastic way to bring less-competitive ships into the tournament scene.

Armada already does something similar with it's fleet commander, that you can only have one of but can provide fleet-wide buffs. Squadron Titles could do something very similar here.

I would rather have squad cards that promote good flying, not just squad building.

Rogue Squadron

When an X-wing performs a green maneuver, it may assign another friendly X-Wing at Range 1 an evade token if it does not have an evade token.

Green Squadron

When a friendly A-wing suffers 2 or more [hits], you may assign 1 [hit] to any other friendly A-wing at range 1.

Wraith Squadron

Rebel Only

All friendly X-wing unique pilots at Range 1-2 of Wedge Antilles may reroll 1 die when attacking.

Able Squadron

All friendly Y-Wings with BTL title may increase their agility +1 for every other friendly BTL Y-wing at range 1-2.

Black Squadron

When attacking with Darth Vader, if the defender is hit by your attack, all other friendly TIE ships at range 1 may roll 1 additional attack die when attacking that defender until the end of the round.

I'll add:

At the beginning of each turn, if you control 2 X-Wings and 2 A-Wings, the opponent must assign 1 humiliation token to 1 of his ships.

While you don't have prices listed:

Rogue Squadron: May be alright depending on cost but really encourages close and slow flying.

Green Squadron: Not sure what to make of this. It may promote the A-Wing swarm that can scatter damage around.

Wraith Squadron/Black Squadron: NO. Too ship specific.

Able Squadron: I fail to see how having more ships in a tight area is going to increase the agility of all of them.

I would rather have squad cards that promote good flying, not just squad building.

This is the spirit of the idea! Even if some of this turns out not to be uber-competitive it will encourage some experimentation without a doubt.

How about this one...

The Force Is Strong With This One - 4 points

Discard this squad card to change one offensive or defensive die result on your side to any result that you chose.

(Essentially a one-time Palp, works for rebels and scum)

Or

You'll never find a more wretched hive... 2 points (Scum only)

Discard this card to exchange places with any other ship at range one, same facing/direction.

(Could put a number of restrictions in this one, size class, type, whatever if needed)

I'm not concerned with asteroids... (1 point)

After obstacles are placed on the map, discard this card to replace any obstacle with a legal asteroid of your choice not already being used

----

Ideas.

I think a squadron role card would be okay.

Defender Squadron, 2 points, When this squadron is within R1 of all members, add a focus result to the defense roll. In addition, the members may spread the damage to any desired ship in the formation that is at R1.

Assault Squadron, 2 points, this card counts as a -3 point card for determining initiative.

Recon Squadron, 2 points, once per turn any single ship in this squadron may make a boost or barrel roll action.

Assassin Squadron, 2 points, if all ships in this squadron target the same ship in a turn each may change 1 blank result to a critical result instead.

Decoy Squadron, 4 points, all ships in this squadron use the lowest pilot for movement purposes, and the highest pilot for attacking.

Lots of people focussing on this idea in terms of "fixes" and making things "competitive" but I like this idea purely cos it's cool. Little bonuses for taking squadrons of the same ship was quite neat when they did Apocalypse formations, I'd be happy to see them for casual play only if there's concerns about how they will effect the holy meta.

All squads with an un-used EPT get a free Adaptability upgrade?

Just kidding, I think it sounds like a cool idea. Probably tricky to balance though.
