Battlefoam

By markcsoul, in X-Wing

So I recently took the plunge and decided to get some battlefoam to hold my precious x-wing ships. My current case was just a large plastic craft case with multiple compartments. Served me well for a few years now but was packed to the brim, not to mention some of the larger ships like the YV and Ghost don't even fit in it.

So I decided to go with the 432 option to ensure I had plenty of space for all my ships, as well as room for several future waves yet. I custom made my trays to match my collection which allowed me to get everything in just 3 trays of varying depth. Unfortunately by optimizing my tray space it meant several small ships ended up in pretty deep foam. I found though that putting them in upside down with a single peg inserted made it easy to remove them from the foam.

The price was kinda high and it took awhile to arrive, but I'm glad to have my collection safe and secure when I take them out of the house.

While I love a lot of things about the Battlefoam bags (the molle on the outside is great) I ended up going with the Feldherr case system. With 3 sizes of travel bags and a cheap cardboard storage system for the shelf I can build out trays for a dozen different mixtures games and adjust my travel bags as needed for that days games.

Yeah I went the Feldherr route too. Much as I love the defined cut-outs for each ship, the collection is always growing, so I needed something more modular. I have two of the boxes each for my rebel and imperial fleets, and a fifth for scum, plus a carry bag perfectly sized to carry two or three lists, and all the necessary tokens/dials/templates. Very happy with it, and their service.

I looked @ all 3 custom foam companies I know of last year. Feildher/Battlefoam/KR multicase. Here were my thought processes.

All 3 are nice but I first dis ousted Battlefoam because while excellent for ships I have currently, especially if I make my own trays, what shape are future releases gonna be? Not really future proof.

So both KR and FH have generic small ship slots with fitted slots for large ships.

However @ the time I went with KR multicase for 3 reasons.

1) Gorgeous aluminium case over the FH plastic ones.

2) At the time KR did a raider tray FH did not.

3) Layouts seemed a little more customisable

I have been meaning to go back and buy a second cardboard case with a Gozanti slot.

I purchased a battle foam case when I got out of the game after wave 4. I have started playing again now the thing is woefully undersized for my ships. I now stor my ships in a glass display case, but am still looking for a good game day case that can hold most squads I want to fly, and the tokens and cards to fly them.

Any recommendations?

battle foam 216... makes a great travel case.

I went with Battlefoam.

It can hold a lot more when you realise some ships will double (or even triple) stack, like A-Wings and Y-Wings and almost all the Imperial small ships can be stored looking out at you in rectangular holes, rather than in the shaped holes they recommend.

Future proofing is always the issue. I used spare space to have some generic size holes. 3 waves later and the Ghost is the only ship that doesn't fit in my current case. Probably have to re-jog a couple of layers soon, but that's not so bad.

I've gone with foam before for other games. I knew my collection would grow. Any foam solution is just too rich for my blood. I'm a cheap guy and I'd rather spend money on more ships. I've got over 50 small based ships and one of all the large ships (save one). I've got most of the epic. If I had to spend foam for all those things....and then some sort of case to carry them, I'd go broke.

I've been using Plano and been loving it. I got it for $20 years ago and it has been utterly fine. I've been playing since Wave 1 and I think I might have had one break in the case. I just used magnets instead and it's even better now.

My only problem is that my collection has gotten too big for the Plano. I got some Plano trays big enough for the Epic ships, but there isn't a case for them. I might just have to get a duffel bag for it.

Unfortunately by optimizing my tray space it meant several small ships ended up in pretty deep foam. I found though that putting them in upside down with a single peg inserted made it easy to remove them from the foam.

I use Battlefoam for all of my ships. Since I have chosen to keep the small ships that come with some of the Epic ships together, I understand what you mean when you try to store the small ships in 3 inches of foam with the Epic's.

One thing I learned after speaking with customer service ... you can make a special request in the comments section asking them to leave the cutout foam in place. I now do this with every order.

Then, you can pull the foam cutout for the small ships out of the 3 inch deep foam (needed for the Epic) and then cut it down to size and put it back in. Now, my small ships sit on the cutout so that they are just below the top level of the foam. They are fully protected, but easy to remove. Simple. Elegant.

I started out with Plano and liked it except for the large ships. Falcon and such moved around too much; I worried about the Decimator's guns, or Falcon breaking off. My wife talked me into going to Battle foam. We both regret and love it. It is expensive and because of the games expansions it is ever changing and growing. I filled up my first case and now am trying to decide what to do. The bag and foam are excellent but the costs are high. I already have tons of foam because I kept changing.

I made tuck boxes for the large based ships and kept them in the top of the Plano case....until I got too many of those. Now, I bought a $10 plastic tool box from Walmart and just put all the tuck boxes in the tool box. Works great, especially as I almost never use the big ships.

I got some large Plano trays for the epics and a Star Wars box from Michaels to put them in, but I can only fit 2 in that box. If I could fit 3 in, then I would have the storage solution I need. I could put the large based ships in the large plano tray and put them all in one container. I need to look for that cheap duffel bag for both my epic and large based.

I got my first Battle Foam at about the same time, with a P.A.C.K. Go (backpack). But as of now, my collection is outgrowing the P.A.C.K., I'm sure you know about that. So, I decided to get another Plano 5231 organizer to carry the stuff I need for tournaments. For bigger events, i.e. Gen Con, I'll take both; but again, I'll take just the Plano to the venue where the tourney is being held.

I splurged on the Battlefoam 1520XL earlier in the year. The main selling point for me was seeing the pluck foam version at a Store Championship. For everyone who's concerned about future proofing, pluck really an ideal way to go. Just go into it with a good pair of scissors and cut a shape roughly large enough to hold your ships. You can even use the squares you pull out as buffers.

Plus, it was $90 cheaper to buy the pluck model versus the custom trays.

Small ships take up a lot less space in foam on their engines facing nose up. In addition, pluck foam allows for a little more versatility from your case as new expansions come out.

I use battlefoam for all my 40k and X-Wing needs, works great and is of higher quality than a lot of less expensive foam out there.

Perhaps the Battlefoam C4 PACK

Battle foam is real nice, but doesn't allow much adaptation as your collection grows, and in my case (heh heh) is prohibitively expensive.

I went with KR since they have generic slots that hold the ships intact on their bases. That way I don't have to waste time before and after a game assembling the ships each time, and it also means less wear on the peg slots.

In hindsight I should have got one of the backpack cases and some cardboard cases to put inside it. Instead I got two of the full size aluminium cases, one for Imperials and one for Rebels. A backpack/cardboard option would have allowed me to keep all my models in their foam and simply take the relevant trays with me when I want to play a game. But having said that, on more than one occasion I've taken both my Imperials and Rebels to a game, either because I'm providing all the models or I'm going to be playing a couple of games and want to switch sides. But if I could do it again I'd go the backpack route.

Battle Foam

Great bass designed by gammers, for gammers but the custom cuts can make the foam less useful and, for me, can damage ships as you take them in and out.
The original with strong ties to GW. great cases and foam. Lots of options bit, honestly, the tech is last decade. Other companies have surpassed them, IMO.
My choice and I have raved about them all over these boards.
Their bags are getting great reviews but the foam is all pluck type. You must make your own sockets for your ships
An Australian company that makes custom foam for many industries. Not priced well for NA buyers but many be an option for EU.
All foam sizes are, by design, not compatible with any other companies cases. Once you choose a type of foam or case you are locked into that company.

I went Games Workshop for my travel case ( https://www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Citadel-Crusade-Figure-Case?locale=en-eu-gw&/e2x/roadrunner/locale/CountryLanguageFormHandler.changeLocation=submit&_requestid=14798728 ).

It's large enough so I can fit 30-40 small ships, 7-8 large and some dice, asteroids, templates etc and it's modular so I can always carry what I need for a game night.

That's the thing no matter what case you get (even Plano). You buy for what you have now, but in a year.....you need so much more! In the case of foam....it is a cost that just continues to grow.

I know, right? I thought I was being all clever and allowing room for expansion, but then my desires outstripped my original intent and well, mistakes were made...

That's why I got the 432 bag to be future proof. There's room for at least 2 more trays depending on the depth of foam I use, possibly 3 even.

That's enough for several more waves of ships yet. So I'll be covered for at least a few more years.
