The installation and guide describes a 'quick reference ' button and shows a picture.
But my toolbar doesn't have that button and I can't find a way to save a squad.
Any ideas?

When you open your player window (the window that pops up when you click on your corresponding player number) you'll see a little green box in the upper left corner. You want to take all the cards, tokens, asteroids, etc. for your chosen squad and place them in that box. They must each be placed so that the center of the card/token is in the center of the green box. When all your pieces are in the box, you can right-click the green box and save the squad.
When you start a new game, you can open your player window, right-click that green box, and load the squad. You will have to unstack all the cards and tokens again, but it's faster than pulling them from the list of ships, upgrades, etc.
Edited by BudgernautAwesome! Thank you.
It's actually faster to save a vlog of your squad as opposed to having to unstack your cards from that every time.
Layout your squad (pilots, upgrades, ships, dials, obstacles) on the map how you want it to appear.
File -> Begin Logfile
Pick a name for it and click save
Select everything
Ctrl-c to copy
File -> End logfile
Now to load the squad, you do
File -> Load Continuation
Select the vlog created above
Click the Step Forward Through Logfile button (right arrow next tot he undo button)
Now you have your squad in the map, and can just select ita ll and drag it into your hand.

This is super easy to do and takes no time after initial setup.
Layout your squad (pilots, upgrades, ships, dials, obstacles) on the map how you want it to appear.
File -> Begin Logfile
Pick a name for it and click save
Select everything
Ctrl-c to copy
File -> End logfile

You learn something new everyday.
I always did it this way:
Layout your squad (pilots, upgrades, ships, dials, obstacles) on the map how you want it to appear.
File -> Begin Logfile
Pick a name for it and click save
Select everything
Ctrl-D to delete
Undo to bring back squad
File -> End logfile
thats interesting. then i guess someone else joins the game as player 2 and somehow loads there squad in?
what if i am joining someone elses game and I am player 2?

Same process. Saving your squad that way isn't dependant on what player you are, because it just loads it onto the actual map. Then you just drag it to whatever player window you are. One person just loads first, moves their list off, then the other person loads.
Just make sure everything will fit in your player window or you'll have problems. I build mine in my player window and copy it to the map then do the save file. Then when I reload the squad and select everything I know it will all fit in the size of the player window. If you have large screens, this probably doesn't affect you. Playing on a 15" MacBook can be ... challenging ... when building and deploying squads.
Everything seems to be in order. Thanks for the advice on squad saving.
I'm nosing around observing other people play to get a feel for the etiquette and whatnot.see how its all done.
