How old were your kids when you introduced "Star Wars"?

By Bojanglez, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I have a 2.5 girl and 10 month old boy and my girl now recognizes the Star Wars logo and some characters (Yoda and Chewie are big favorites) and has watched the TFA trailer a bunch of times. at the weekend she said "I want to watch Star Wars with you" and it got me thinking about the appropriate time to introduce the movies and shows and was curious when my fellow fathers decided they were old enough.

I saw ANH at 7 (when it was first released) and I'm thinking 5+ at a minimum and would love to know the ages you introduced it to your kids and the reactions? Would you change what you did with the benefit of hindsight?

Happy Father's Day to you all!

My almost-3 year old has been watching rebels since last January. He was about 18 months old then. He really enjoys it still, but it is not on par with Dinosaur Train.

He has seen the movies, but I doubt he remembers them. Thinking of waiting until he is 5 to really watch them.

Thank you - I was actually thinking of starting her on Star Wars Lego, Rebels might not be a bad idea either...

My 5 month old son is having it kind of forced on him as his nursery is nothing but Star Wars. My 3 year old daughter on the other hand recognizes all the main characters, loves her Star Wars look and find books, and watches Rebels with me from time to time. My nephews, both 5 now, have seen all the current movies and are obsessed with it. My nephew that just turned 3 (brother to one of the 5 year olds) is slowly growing into it, but is obsessed with Dinosaurs now. I think the imaginex toys are really good for younger kids and the Rebels show, as it's got the cartoon feel. By age 5, I think most kids would be able to handle the movies. You really don't have much blood in any of the movies except a scene or two here and there, and no foul language, at least not in English.

I was probably 6-7 when I first saw them, probably when they were on TV one evening.

The primary concern I would have would be some things being a bit frightening for younger viewers (e.g. wampas, rancors, Darth Vader, limbs getting lopped off left and right, Holiday Special). You'd be the best judge of whether your kids can handle it.

When in doubt, LEGO Star Wars is always entertaining! :D

I'd start them as early as possible. They will get to know everything, but probably when they are 5-6 you can make an attempt to watch them all in order. That way they will know and love Star Wars in some vague sense until they are old enough to really get it when they are older.

My mother-in-law bought me a bunch of those Galactic Heroes for when I had a son. I have 2 daughters and no sons in sight, but my girls played with those figures a lot and learned their names and such. My daughters are 6 and 4 and we watched all 7 Star Wars movies this year. It was their first time watching the movies. I think they're still a little young for it. The 4-year old got bored at parts and the 6-year old bombarded me with questions through every single movie. I was basically repeating dialog the whole time in response to her questions, but I didn't let it bother me.

I agree that earlier is better than later. Have them watch it when they're impressionable, before they have any idea of what makes a good movie and what makes a bad movie. Then they'll look back on Star Wars with nostalgia and will hopefully be life-long Star Wars fans.

Mine were ~2-3.

I dont have kids but i remember being really into the 12" action man/Gi Joe toys in the UK and had never heard of star wars until i made friends with a kid at school who had loads of the toys.

Until i saw the film (probably shown on normal TV in the very early 80s i was really confused by how they got all these things into space (to me 'space' was rockets and moon landings)

I think i saw EPIV probabably about 1982 when i was seven and then empire, im pretty sure i saw empire on video rather than the cinema. I do remember seeing 'jedi' at the cinema and being super excited about it.

I think its easier to get kids into it younger as like many others have said you now get SW plush toys, easy build lego kits and 'super size' figures. The sheer amount of toy merchandise for younger kids now compared to when i was little is staggering and then you also have all the cartoons

would it be worth starting them off with the ewok movies if they are very young?

I was around 6 when I first saw the OT I believe. Episode 5 was pretty scary back then, but it made the whole experience a lot better. While of course most horror movies are innapropriate for children I don't think it is healthy to avoid your kid getting scared at all either.

I'm ( no offense) probably a lot younger than you guys, I was afraid of any kind of movie in general. Therefore I never watched them, I really disliked SW. But then came the day when I was 10 that my cousin made me watch SW the CW the movie, and I really liked it, from thereon I started completley buying in to Lego SW. Now I

love all of SW.

Don't have kids, but I literally cannot remember a point where SW wasn't a part of my life

I was about 5 or 6. I think Empire was the first one I saw.

My Youngest is 3 and loves TFA and all the original trilogy (plus episode 1) i havent tried them on episode 2 or 3 yet!

My eldest is almost 6 and like playing X wing with me using generics and no weird and wonderful abilities yet! he also loves the rogue squadron games on my gamecube.

5 Days.If your minion hasn't seen it yet you're clearly a bad father (and not in the way Luke's dad is bad). :)

I don't know how I was when I was introduced..:
I watched Ep I in the Cinema when I was 6, but I guess I already knew something about the Universe.

The thing is, me comming from Germany, where Media regulation is not just an advice but actually law enforced to protect children (which I don't think is a bad idea) so, I'd probably go with the regulation.

But then again, I'm not yet an expert in child raising and I dare not to tell you what you should do and what not, as long as it is as reasonable as Star Wars (which kinda is a teaching in culture :D )
