Can't believe that this is what we are focusing on

.

Not that two players fighting for the 8th spot simultaneous fired to tie knocking themselves out for someone else

Not that there were 0 rebels in the top 8

Not that there were no triple jumps

Not that the prize support was meh

Not that 3-2 players were told to come back for a second day to be told essentially that they can't make it on the second day at he last minute

Not how awesome of a venue origins was

Not about how Wade did his best to make the event enjoyable with what was given to him.

No, we are up in arms about someone having fun with their shield tokens....

so I doubt the lists will be posted but from what I recall

1) Duncan Howard- palpaces (soontir inquisitor shuttle)

2) Jeff Berlin- Dengaroo

4)Derek Tokaz - Tel and bossk with concussion missile and cracks-hot

4)Preston Blitzer- oicunn w/ palp and whisper

8)Ron Brannan- palp aces soontir inquisitor shutype

8)Dan Poppe-

8)Bryan England-Dengaroo

8) Gene Hogle-F/O swarm with weapons guidance

I'm sure this can be updated further myself, Richard Hsu, and Jeremy Howard rounded out the top ten

I'm pretty sure Dan had that painted black and red palp aces with omega leader. Picture of it is around.

He was playing inq OL wampa palps

That is me. Yes, those were my painted ships (painted by two different friends of mine) and It was Palp Shuttle, Wampa, Inq, OL

Care to let those who couldn't see it live in on the joke?

I took this picture and posted it to the Phoenix Squadron Facebook page. I apologize to Duncan. He's a really nice guy from getting to talk to him this weekend, he was having fun playing x-wing, and I felt the whole thing was hysterical. He really doesn't deserve a firestorm of complaints for something that brought a few moments of entertainment to our weekend. I wish I hadn't posted the picture in the first place.

Sorry, Duncan.

I find the joke hilarious. If you want to find something of a bit more "worth" in the whole story, think of it as a statement against challenge coins and for more gamepieces as prices. The trophy thing just leads the whole thing to new levels of absurdity. Its great I think its a shame that you'll be seen as a ****** for doing something like that.

The simultaneous fire knocking us both out of the top 8 (Sorry Dan!) was simultaneously the most epic and disappointing X-Wing moment of my life... What a game! We both just laughed/cried it off. Always surprising us!

In any case, thanks for reminding all of us to focus on the important things that happened. It was an excellent event!

With all this shield token nonsense, we are missing the biggest story of Nationals. 4 Gamma Squadron bombers made the cut to day two and went 4 - 1 on Friday (2 full wins, 2 modified wins). I'm that pilot, and here is the list... I finished 38th but barely lost the last two matches, and didn't get wiped off the board.

Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Extra Munitions (2)
Flechette Torpedoes (2)
XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1)
Guidance Chips (0)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Extra Munitions (2)
Plasma Torpedoes (3)
Seismic Charges (2)
Guidance Chips (0)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Extra Munitions (2)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Seismic Charges (2)
Guidance Chips (0)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Extra Munitions (2)
Assault Missiles (5)
XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1)
Guidance Chips (0)
Total: 100

This is so many kinds of awesome I can't begin to put it into words.

I watched part of your opening game against the 5x A-wing swarm and was impressed with how your list was set up to handle a variety of opponents. I'd love to hear more about how you employed the bombers against different list types.

In the vast majority of matches it is basically keeping the opponent in front of me for as long as possible. For scouts, I want to be able to get all 4 bombers with target locks on them. For swarms of any type, it is making sure the bomber with assault missiles gets it's opportunities to fire and do as much damage as possible. For Aces, just try and keep them in front, and hit somebody that has PTL'd with the Flechette Torpedoes... then drop some seismic charges to limit their options.

A lot of it is going slow and then closing to range 2 - 3. If for whatever reason I don't get that range 2 - 3 target lock, I focus up all the bombers and use the guys with Tracers to get everybody target locks. It is what helped me against a Dengar/Manroo build that I beat. Everything in the list has specific roll, and you may not necessarily use it all the time.

Also, depending on how beat up a bomber becomes, it eventually goes into blocking mode. I would also try not to get drawn into the rocks as I wanted as much room as possible to keep a target lock and then K-Turn. It helped in my match against Triple Aces to get off an assault missile that killed Inquisitor and Fel in the same turn.

Bombers hate having to turn around with out the K-Turn, it just takes them way to long to re-engage. Keep the enemy in front of you as long as possible. Play against tons of lists and just realize... you will probably loose a bomber the first round of shooting and adapt to the situation that is presented.

One thing to note, this list is designed for timed matches. It has a lot of hull to chew through... all my games except 1 went to time. In untimed matches the bombers especially against Aces will eventually die.

Congrats to the winner, but I'm just a little sad that it's Palp Aces :(

Hopefully some of the lists that get absolutely eaten by uboats get some kind of buff, because they're the things that are generally good against Palp Aces (rebel control, stresshog, etc).

This was unbelievable. On the plus side, you can probably make a blog post asking for tequila and have more material than you'll ever need for the podcast!

Everything else is still processing/uploading, but there's the start.

E: Just going to throw all the updates and such here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/223041-origins-2016-footage/ . Told some of the players I'd make a post on the FFG forums, not sure they'll find it here!

Just watched the match-- holy cow I feel bad for Jeff, lol.

Duncan better buy a lottery ticket!

Random sidenote, but i wanted to give a shoutout to all the Ohio and Michigan guys that were at US nationals, i played several across the two days, everyone was super friendly. Your representation of your back yard was awesome and i look forward to seeing you guys again.

Thanks, the atmosphere at nationals was awesome. Everyone I played was super friendly and all had good sportsmanship! Not sure if we played each other, but I had Dengar and Kavil.

Don't believe so, i was running imperial aholes, had a POP snowtrooper as my palp token.

I think it was douchey of the Mynocks to use the coins in the first place. Maybe that's cause I've seen some of them play. I think Duncan doing it and adding the championship trophy was hilarious. Taking it at face value that it was indeed a joke. In order to really make an educated opinion you have to know the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Origins judge here...

I was ok with Duncan's unorthodox shield tokens. We didn't experience an opponent who challenged them though I think Duncan would have switched them out had he been asked. I think any player using a non standard card or token should have a legal backup available if challenged. At the campaign against cancer (I know, not a top level FFG event) I was using cookies as shield tokens. So many noms. But ever match I asked my opponent if they had a concern, nobody did. They just laughed as they shot me.

Side note, we had someone day 1 who forgot a bunch of tokens. She ended up buying hearts from Broken Token to use as focus and some other players donated target locks and whatever else she needed. It was a great moment of sportsmanship.

Final comment. Someone mentioned using a TO rules discussion as a stall tactic. That clearly stated under the Unsportsmanlike Conduct policy. A good TO should recognize that and deal with it as necessary. We had some lengthy discussion in a couple games for nationals and we added an appropriate amount of time to those matches to make sure our evaluation didn't have an impact on the game. I'd rather take the time to get a ruling correct than do something hasty and get it wrong as such extending time is justified.

Awesome event. I had a great time judging. See you all at gencon.

That's awesome.

Someone apparently had some cards missing from their damage deck on Friday (right before round 1), and multiple people offered a spare.

There's no way I'm letting someone not play in a tournament just because they're missing something like tokens or a damage deck (assuming I have a spare).

I can not for the life of me figure out why anyone would give alternate shield tokens a second thought. Either it's a joke that you don't get, or they're showing off and trying to get in your head. Either way, it makes no meaningful difference in any aspect of your life unless you let it. So don't let it.

So what happens when someone starts bringing My Little Pony figures and using them as Target Locks, setting a matching pair next to ships? As long as there is ample room on the board and its clear who is locking whom, then this shouldn't make a "meaningful difference" either. Yet, I imagine most people would s*$# bricks if someone tried this at a tournament.

So clearly it's not just an "anything goes" sort of attitude that we need, because I suspect most people would have a problem with the above and would prefer to not see it in the game.

I try to follow the same guidelines as the ship modification rule. You can mod your ship as long as its easily recognizable as the intended ship. If its easy enough to recognize what is being used then it's ok. It's a judgement call and I think that should be your opponent's call. If you disagree, call the TO over and discuss it. There was someone using a third party acrylic focus token. It was obvious they were focus and I'd be surprised if anyone were to call him on that. Taken to the extreme as in your example, my little pony figures would be across my line. I've said before, if you think you're anywhere close to that line, make sure you have backups and are prepared to switch them out. No need to give a negative experience over a joke.

Wow, after 8 pages, i can't figure out what was both players list.

Duncan H was flying Palpmobile with Inquisitor and Fel (standard loadouts)

Jeff B was flying his Dengaroo list (Dengar+Manaroo): he was Runner-Up with it in the Michigan Regional a few months ago and won the Ohio Regional with it

It's now the third year in a row Jeff B has made the final table at a US National/NA Championship (he was Gencon Champ last year and Runner-Up the year before that). Impressive!

To get a little back on track, I had a great time at the event. I finished 4-2 with my Wes, Biggs, and Corran list. Considering I hadn't played much xwing in the past year, I was super pleased with my results.
