8)Dan Poppe-

8)Bryan England-Dengaroo

8) Gene Hogle-F/O swarm with weapons guidance

I'm sure this can be updated further myself, Richard Hsu, and Jeremy Howard rounded out the top ten

I'm pretty sure Dan had that painted black and red palp aces with omega leader. Picture of it is around.

He was playing inq OL wampa palps

Anyone know if Jeff was running the same thing that he was during the Regionals he placed at?

Who cares what he uses for his shield tokens? We can tell they're meant to be shields, and if you're pysched out by seeing someone with them then you aren't going to be able to win at the top tables. It's a joke, anyway!

Yep, same list!

He was.

It's not intimidating at all its just the epitome of douchiness. I can't imagine it being a joke more than please think I'm an elite level player. Only thing worst than that is the fact that he's an adult who chews gum with his mouth open loudly...

It's a joke - it's not designed to be an intimidation tactic, it's in response to some players at Hoth using championship coins as shield tokens. Upping the ante, so to speak. It'd be a ****** thing if he walked into a casual tournament with new players and (at the start of each game) loudly states, "I won each of these at nationals/regionals*, I like to use them for shields".

*I don't know which one they are from

i allways carry a crap ton of shield tokens. Id just hand him the appropriate number and say "Here you go, now you have to replace those coins with shield tokens"

Where do we draw the line? If you're allowed to do that then next tournament I'll use my ffg dice bags as focus tokens and deck boxes as evades.

Fine it was a joke. But the key to a joke is to know your audience. It wasn't that funny then, its not that funny now, and if it continues it doesn`t hold up as a joke anymore.

Well I think it's a neat idea actually. I mean, pretty funny to poke fun at people who think champ coins are a cool substitute. But on the other hand... people have acrylic tokens for everything now sooo...

... I hardly ever get to use my acrylic Ion tokens, maybe I'll use the reverse side of them as shield tokens for my special snowflakes?

I'm sure most of the people at Nationals knows about the joke, if not he probably told them and they got a good laugh before the game started.

So theres been video streams mentioned, are they online anywhere?

I laughed. Some people think everything is a taunt.

Well you can't just spoil the keyboard warriors fun. I'm sure they would all go up to a guy they don't even know and say STAHP USING THOSE I FIND IT MORALLY REPREHENSIBLE!

Duncan is a nice guy who was just having fun. Maybe you guys should try it, after all we are playing a game with toy space ships.

Even if it is a joke, if it comes across as poor taste to anyone, you should reconsider your approach. But I have a feeling the Mynock/Hoth guys and Duncan are well aware it ticks some people off and they do it anyways because they find it to be funny enough they continue it despite this. Not the ticking people off part, but the "having their ridiculous and possibly unhealthy over indulgence in X-wing apparent in every game" part.

Also, weapons guidance FOs in the top 8? That can go on the list of things I never expected to see in top 8 of anything. I played Weapons Guidance Crack shot FOs the other day and I actually was really pleased with how well they did. Maybe I was sort of kind of not really on to something!

They also have a "nice" little habit of turning one of your dice hit results to a focus themselves without giving or asking you to do it when they use their Sensor Jammer on the shuttle. Game or no game some things are rude and in poor taste. That and the coin/trophy tokens, while in their mind may just be all in good fun, they also knows that it gets a rise out of people and they enjoy that in some sort of middle school, alpha male way. Each to their own I suppose, but I find it disrespectful.

I am not claiming any moral high ground and I do not know Duncan Howard. If I face Mr. Howard (unlikely) i will play with courtesy and decorum. I however feel doing what he did is less than classy and if it is a joke, it is not a funny one. I feel this way because I do not know him and because I do not know him, I feel what he did was not classy.

If I were to play with solid gold shield tokens and platinum ion tokens, I would be showing a complete lack of class.

Some people started using Challenge Coins from winning Store Championships as Shield Tokens. This guy showed up and did that on one ship, PLUS used Regionals trophies as Shield Tokens on another ship.

Technically, the rules do say you can substitute anything you want for missing tokens or tokens you don't have enough of, as long as both players agree to it. But in a formal tournament, the TO could still say you have to use something more normal than a trophy, because the TO has final say on all game component uses.

So we've actually gone through this. Someone tried to Vader crew a face up damage card against an IG that had challenge coins as shields. He argued that they're not shield tokens and that I missed the activate shields step. I countered with activating shields is not a trigger that can be missed, like Tactician or Rebel Captive. I was then allowed to replace my challenge coins with shield tokens.

It's fine, he puts his dials on his cards which is not allowed. What happens when you forget to set a dial for a ship? Does your opponent get to choose? Rulebook fight. He's so done for lol.

Does that say that in the FAQ or rule book? Can I show up to an event without focus tokens and use pennies or whatever for tokens? I have 5 challenge coins and I want to force opponents that would prefer me to use regular shield tokens to have to deal with it. I could just not bring enough shield tokens.

At times, I can be a bit of a WAAC player. So in the past when I see this type of thing, I usually just use it to my advantage. This type of thing is always an advantage to your opponent. At my last regional, a player was playing with the store coins as shields. In the last 10 minutes of the game, it became apparent that I needed to stall to win due to MOV. So I looked across the table, acted like I just noticed them for the first time and needed to call the judge over to discuss my opponent not using actual shield tokens. The judge took about 3 minutes to get over. Took enough time of the clock, and gave me the win. People just have to learn how to abuse these things.

If anyone is disrespected by my shield tokens, it's working.

Calm down and fly casual, nerd.

That's actually cheating and you're worse than the player with the shield tokens.

I've started referring to them as shield tokens out of habit.

I can not for the life of me figure out why anyone would give alternate shield tokens a second thought. Either it's a joke that you don't get, or they're showing off and trying to get in your head. Either way, it makes no meaningful difference in any aspect of your life unless you let it. So don't let it.

It's that WAAC lifestyle, my man....

Random sidenote, but i wanted to give a shoutout to all the Ohio and Michigan guys that were at US nationals, i played several across the two days, everyone was super friendly. Your representation of your back yard was awesome and i look forward to seeing you guys again.

Look at it this way, every time I would take off a shield token I either killed a store or regional championship. Maybe I can talk the TO into bonus MOV points.

With all this shield token nonsense, we are missing the biggest story of Nationals. 4 Gamma Squadron bombers made the cut to day two and went 4 - 1 on Friday (2 full wins, 2 modified wins). I'm that pilot, and here is the list... I finished 38th but barely lost the last two matches, and didn't get wiped off the board.
