Need opinions on an idea.

It seems to me that recently on the boards there have been a number of new players that have gotten into the game, which is awesome. Welcome to the addiction! At the same time I have noticed many of them doing what I did in the past, posting questions that have been answered numerous times. Luckily, everyone on here is really cool about it and either answers their questions or post the link to the discussion which has already answered the question at length.

This is great, but it got me thinking. There has to be a better way to have some of the questions that new players have in a more efficient way. My first thought was to try to have some of these basic questions and ideas pinned at the top of a board somewhere, but then I realized that there are only 2 total pinned topics on the entires board. My second thought was to maybe start a blog with many of these questions answered, but then I remembered that I am not a great writer and the questions have already been answered anyway. Plus, there are great blogs out there already that address many of these issues.

I don't really know what my point is, but I want to do something to try to create some sort of new player guide, for lack of a better term, to try and help new people. Armada is the first tabletop/miniature game I ever played or owned and it was a little intimidating at first, but once I got over that intimidation I can't get enough of it.

Give me your thoughts, should I try to compile advice and rules clarifications from these boards onto a blog or should we try to do something within these boards?

I think a stickied thread would be a good idea.

As for blogs, there are several very excellent ones out there already, although I'll let their owners post their own links because I'm just waiting for coffee. That said, there's always room for more if its something you want to do.

Check out my blog - I've got a new player section for folks that have just finished with playing the first demo game with the core set.

Link is in my signature - upper right corner of the blog has the New Player Guide.

There have been a couple of "Post new player advice here" threads, as well as "Anyone with a Armada Blog link it here." Imo both would be good candidates for stickies to solve the issue you bring up.

Biggs, your blog is fantastic and the first place I point new players.

Brobafett, those were the two topics I was thinking of when I started this topics.

The question is how do we get those things pinned?

I like the idea of a stickied thread and a dedicated resource blog too.

Hey, chalk up another for 'Biggs has an absolutely stellar blog' even if I don't say it that much. Seriously first rate stuff and one I've read through a few times in getting a handle on some of the more nebulous topics like placement, objectives, and the other less talked about but still critically important aspects of the game.

Another one I'd mention is the Fire When Ready podcast. Jim's style is no IFF 'vets round table experience' but it does a very good job at concisely nailing down concepts and considerations for players.

And then there's a few really good rules question topics about shooting phase timing clarifications that were excellent. I just can't quite recall where they are.

If someone does make a really helpful new player topic, I wouldn't mind putting it in my signature either. Not that it'll do much but more exposure is always good, eh?

Getting a thread stickied is a pain but I would like a newbies guide. . .

As a newbie, I'm happy to report I know how to use the search.

Between that and reading the rulebook a second time I think I've got the jist.

But yes, as a newbie I didn't know where to look. But didn't want to annoy folks with question threads without searching first. I'd like to point out that searching the main FFG "News" page was a HUGE help as the early previews of the game cleared up some of my less clever moments.

Hope this helps y'all plan to help new newbies.

Just ask in the rules Forum, there are many who like answering questions and usually it only takes a us a few moments.

Biggs' blog taught me the concepts of obstacle placing.

Vassal taught me to place obstacles well.

I've had a stickied thread in the rules forum since just after the game was launched (admittedly, I've not updated it in a while). I think I just posted in the thread requesting that it was stickied and it was. I originally started it because even back then, the same questions were being asked again an

I'm happy to add more links if people request in that thread. However, the problem is that most new players don't notice it. I think we need a sticky thread of "useful links" in the main Armada forum, which can point people in the right direction.
