I am luck biased

By Amanal, in Star Wars: Armada

Sometimes I fear that for all the good things that happen in my life Kharma gets even by making my dice rolls so far off the probability curve it is funny. I am so lucky when I take SW-7's I also have to take H9 Turbolasers to then get an accuracy. In a recent Vassal game my dice roller wasn't working and I had my opponent roll dice for me. I killed Dengar in two shots, blew up his Raider with a Structural Damage Card and was amased at just how well I was doing when I didn't touch the dice, even virtual ones.

Which prompts the question, can I ask my opponent to roll my dice and never touch those thrice dammed pieces of plastic ever again?

Officially you're supposed to roll all your own dice, but you could ask if an opponent is willing to humour you.

Alternatively you could try wearing lucky gloves so the thrice dammed pieces of plastic don't come into contact with your the unlucky parts of your fingers.

My Fencing Glove, which I may consider lucky, smells terrible.

Heck my opponent could well get a whiff over Vassal. We have VR, now we have Smell-o-Vision for when the virtual reality is just not real enough!!

Hmmm, your choice a toxic blast of BO or you roll my dice.... :D

taking funk to the next level of dam-meta

Last night I had 4 B Wings swinging against capital ships for 4 rounds. I rolled not a single double hit and something like 7 or 8 blanks. Sometimes the dice just suck.

Just ignore probability, it does not really mean much in regards to a small number of events ( data points) sure you can understand the odds ( but your still fundamental gambling, probability only works with large numbers of events being combined) , but it's as (more) important to take into account and plan for variation ( standard cause) this means that at some point when you roll a handful of black dice you will roll all blanks or all hit crit and every result in between. What can you do.....

1)Minimise variation with lots of small dice rolls linked to scree ( linked to ACM or APT) or TLRC, roll blue dice with sw7

2)Have a cheating reroll upgrade ( still a gamble)

3)Know what your min damage is and have a plan B and C if that happens

As an aside, If you pick up a handful of black dice and rolling them eight times ( some say six) in a row and get nothing but blanks, this is statistically significant and there must be some form of special cause, I would suggest ..........Freaking out cus:

1) luck is real and yours has run out

2) aliens or ghosts are trying to communicate with you

3) some other plot line from a SF or horror movie is just about to unfold.

In all the above cases I would start to use a really smelly fencing glove.... As it could be of use in any number of weird movie plot lines. I do have a particularly stinking, slightly rotting one stashed away just in case I need it.

I can send you my fencing glove, seems you need it more than I do.

You could but it's a bit distracting for your opponent, every action that takes conscious thought no matter how small, stops you from undertaking any other conscious thought. Our sub conscious, intuitive side can multi task and take in the wider picture, our conscious activate thinking side can do exactly one thing at a time. Also the more we are actively concentrating the more we stop using our intuitive side to look at the whole picture. So getting someone to roll your dice is taking their thinking time away from them.

I could roll his dice to even things up.

Now try to remember did you get 8 blanks in a row ? This is significant......que the music........

I like it.

In my experience, there is no such thing as luck...

Last night I had 4 TIE Bombers. Pretty consistently was seeing blank, hit, hit, hit/crit. Sometimes the dice LOVE to be average too.

**** dice just do what they want really though.

This is one of those reasons that dice manipulation effects (Turbolaser Reroute Circuits, Leading Shots, Ordnance Experts, even Darth Vader if there's ever a ship suite that supports him well enough) can be so powerful. Bomber Command Center is going to be huge in wave 3 for this reason, I'm thinking. Everyone knows that one guy who loves to roll blanks on black bomber dice at crucial moments and Bomber Command Center is for him.

I don't think I've ever been as excited for a single card as I am for Bomber Command.

I had a guy I used to game with who had a simple system for his dice betraying him. If a die failed him on a critical roll, he put it aside. When he got home or the very next day, he would put that die on his driveway, with all of the other dice surrounding it. Then he would melt that bugger with a blowtorch to teach the rest a lesson.

EDIT - Admittedly, this was a d6 bought in bricks of 36 for a few dollars, not Armada dice that are almost a buck each.

Professional advice may be needed..........

That man I can respect, as he is a man of principles.

Would 12/14 on blue dice count?

Can't remember if it was continuous or not, but you may need that fencing glove more than pyqz.

Or maybe he gets the smelly glove and you get Lyraeus's sock?

You stopped gaming with him after he ran out of dice?

Nah, it was just years ago and now I can't remember who it was.

Last weekend I played in a little tournament where I failed to destroy two MC-30's after throwing a total of 26 red and 4 blue dice at each. I understand the pain of sometimes feeling like your game is a slave to luck.

I sacrifice several goats to the dice gods before weekly armada. :)

Funnily enough I normally sacrifice dice to the goat god.

Ia! Shub-niggurath!

When I'm playing cards and I need a change of luck I try one of the following...

1. Walk around my chair...

2. Zap deck with magic fingers

3. Tap the top of the deck when offered a cut...

These tried and true methods work 50% of the time, every time!

That's what's needed loaded dice...
