Hera and Navigator

By MalusCalibur, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Alright, so this one has been puzzling me for a while. Equipping the Navigator crew to Hera (either in the Ghost or Phantom) seems like it should be a fantastic combination, but I can't quite reason out the interaction when both abilities are used.

Hera's ability reads: 'When you reveal a green or red maneuver, you may rotate your dial to another maneuver of the same difficulty'

Navigator reads: 'When you reveal a maneuver, you may rotate your dial to another maneuver with the same bearing. You cannot rotate to a red maneuver if you have any stress tokens'

So, as per my understanding, its possible to trigger both abilities at once when revealing a green or red move since both activate from revealing the dial - and therefore the controlling player chooses the order they happen. All fine so far.

But here's the problem - since both abilities refer specifically to the move you originally revealed as their trigger (as the new one must be the same difficulty/bearing respectively), is it actually possible to use both abilities sequentially? As it would appear that, should you use one ability to change the move, trying to use the other one afterward would render the first change pointless since the final maneuver selection still needs to be the same difficulty or bearing as the move originally revealed?

In simpler terms, does the maneuever originally selected persist as the trigger for one ability if the other is used first? The intent and consensus seem to be that it does not, but the way the cards are worded suggests that it does.

Can anyone shed any light on it?

Basically, they stack the way you think they should - you can change your manoeuvre with one, then change the manoeuvre you change to with the other, in either order, as long as the new manoeuvre you pick satisfies the requirements. So, you could reveal a hard 2, change it to a hard 1 with Navigator, then change it to the other hard 1 with Hera, or vice versa.

IMO this is not a particularly intuitive interaction for the reasons you not, and there's no explicit FAQ for it, but it's fundamentally the same interaction as Imperial Boba and Navigator, which has been FAQed to work this way.

Very few people use the combo though, because despite its flexibility it's extremely expensive and doesn't actually make you any better at dealing damage unless it's the difference between shooting and not, and it uses up a very valuable crew slot - and crew!Hera is also a VERY strong card on the VCX in particular.

Also worth noting that the interaction between Navigator and Stay on Target relies on the same precedent set by Fettigator.

With Hera and Navigator, you can select the straight 1 or 2 which are green and then can rotate to any straight or bank on the dial. Hera can switch to a 1 green bank, then navitor can go up/down the dial for speed. If Hera selects a red maneuver, she can select any other red, then navigator can go up down the dial to any other hard turn. So basically, when setting your dial, you only need a straight 2, or the 5 kturn.

I use to fly Heragator quite a bit with AC + ABT to melt enemies, or just land behind them and get 4/5 red die attack. Loaded her up with Engine Upgrade for more arc dodging. She can land behind 4 hp ships and melt them.

Its a fun ship to fly.
