So I had my first game of Armada last night.....

By cjk1975, in Star Wars: Armada

And I want to sell my Xwing stuff really really bad. Anyone else do something like this?? LOL

Granted we played a 225pt game with no upgrades but man I loved the flow, I still get my squadron small based fighters to attack, it's literally all there. I don't get why this game isn't any bigger ya know??

X-wing is still good for beer and pretzels gaming - it easier to get on the table with little time or with friends that are less committed to games.. After a full 400 pts game my synapses are overheating..

But yes.. Armada is a WAY better design IMHO than X-wing.. But X-wing is more a gateway game - easier and more seductive, but in no ways stronger.. Armada is a real miniatures wargame packaged in seductive theme and pre-painted ships.

This discussion has happened a few times. For me, I vastly prefer Armada to X-Wing. Don't get me wrong, X-Wing is a great game. It has a great pace, is quick to play and is an excellent tactical game. But the strategic depth of Armada is nearer and dearer to my heart. I wouldn't say I rushed out and sold all of my X-Wing (I still have a massive Rebel force), but I haven't played a game in. . .over a year?

I already got rid of my imperial forces. I'm sitting on a huge rebel lot complete through the current wave except the cr90....but yeah... I'd trade it in a heartbeat for more Armada. And I already have 2 of everything at least lol

I switched games more because of the community than the gameplay. I've found the Armada group to be a lot less worrisome about "Meta" and "Viability" when it comes to things to play.

We also have a Drunk Tarkin.

YESSS!!!! LOL

cjk, I felt the same way after my first game. Great flow. I remember having StarWars music popping into my head while playing it the first few times! :) The ISD still does that for me.

I never got into X-Wing. Now more because, holy cow, there is SO much out there already. With Armada, even getting in now, you'll be able to process everything. Especially since EVERYTHING is about to break with Flotillas and the Interdictor.

I don't think Armada will ever overtake X-Wing (although it should!) because the game takes longer and requires twice the space.

I can only verify that for the most part Armada players want to play and are great dudes that enjoy the challenge.

(You will soon be wondering how you have 6 CR90s and 5 MC30s in your box. BE PREPARED)

I have 4 of each flotilla pre ordered.....

God help me now lol

mostly, it seems to be an issue of space

esp in the big city where stores gotta accommodate plenty of hobbies simultaneously, 3 by 6 is a lot to ask for (it's two x-wing games)

the game is superior though, and objectively so (no green dice)

The flow of the game and the missions really make it for me.

You can play agains the same opponent 2x with the same list and a different mission and have a completely different game.

I started off on Armada and obviously fell in love with it, my friend who introduced me to Armada tried to do the same with Xwing. I had 2 demo games beat him both times with lists he gave me and tbh i felt that xwing just wasn't tactical enough. I know it probably is to a degree but I honestly felt it was a step down from Armada...A HUGE step down. I know it sounds crass and rather stuck up but Armada is for the serious gamer imo.

Now that I've played both games, I know how you feel. Armada just gives me that real feel compared to X-Wing. And please, I'm not bashing xwing at all. I just have found out that Armada is mote my type of game

Keep both games! too many people I know sell off one game and than later regret it... in many cases RE-purchasing the same stuff.

I did the opposite. I started with Armada, and I am still heavily into it, but I started X-Wing long after I started Armada. I'm loving X-Wing for what it offers me over Armada. (Don't get me wrong, I love Armada; I just think it could have incorporated a lot of what I feel makes X-Wing great). These are what makes X-Wing fun for me, when compared to Armada:

  • X-Wing doesn't have a fixed game end. Unfortunately, due to the long game times, Armada needs a fixed turn limit. :(
  • X-Wing units have much more movement on the table. In Armada, most ships pretty much move 24" (if that), have one engagement pass, and the game ends. This is coupled with the 1st bullet.
  • X-Wing games are shorter and less taxing to play. The pre-plotted moves in X-Wing is what really makes me love X-Wing when compared to Armada. Armada should have somehow used a fully pre-plotted movement "template" system, as it especially relates to the high-level strategic planning of a fleet game. It would have tremendously sped up play. Armada games take a long time in large part due to maneuvers, both in deciding what to do and executing the move on the map. I often see players take over 10 minutes just to make/execute one darn ship move. UGH!!! See next point.
  • X-Wing is much easier to manage on the table. 400 point Armada games that have lots of squadrons often turn into a long game of Operation (circa 1965). Having to surgically extract multiple ships and lots of squadrons for every move really bugs me. I feel this this could have been drastically reduced in design by spreading out the engagement ranges; moving the frequent firing ranges from what we have now from (0-6") to well beyond 12". A minimum firing distance would have dissuaded the clustering we often have in Armada, and it would be great for tactics/strategy to have weapons with minimum firing distances.
  • Player base. There are at least 50x as many X-Wing players locally than Armada. Finding Armada games on any regular basis is not easy here. <_<

The above are pretty much a summary of what I would change in Armada.

I bought the starter for x wing and I really enjoyed it... easy to just play out a few games with a friend when you have only a little bit of time... but for me, capital ships just feel a lot more fun to play with... so even if I have fewer opportunities to play the game because of time constraints, I'll enjoy the time spent much much more

My friend bought a lot of X-Wing, and I am still waiting to play a game with it, because every time we play, Armada hits the table. Welcome to the club!

Both games are great for what they offer.

As a game, I prefer X-Wing, it's really elegant and I love the rythm, it's fast and it needs a lot of coordination and being able to guess correctly where your opponent is going to go next... then you see all those move resolve and you are so invested because you can't wait to find out if you were right or wrong about your opponent's next move! But, I don't like the current state of the game with people taking it more and more seriously, or maybe I'm just burned out.

If there was one thing I would have like better in Armada is if they would have found another way to make it work than the I go/you go activation phase. Give too much emphasis on how many ship you need to bring to the table.

MWUHAHAHAHA! Down the rabbit hole you go!

Armada is still growing. We are the 3rd best selling tabletop game in the US and that was released before it was even a year old!

Help build your community and it will grow ^_^

DONE N DONE!

I agree from a game standpoint, it makes it tough, but I think it is meant to accurately depict the advantage that presenting a large number of targets would have in a meatspace fleet battle.

Or maybe I'm over thinking it and it's just the least of all evils from a game design standpoint

And the alternative would require a complete remaking of the game. If you have players alternate their entire fleet, then one person will get to fire with everything before their opponent does anything. To balance that, you'd have a completely different game.

Without changing everything, thing of this:

You're out of range of an Ackbar toilet boil. Your opponent is second player and sitting on a contested outpost. You have to move in, and your opponent can concentrate fire on everything in your fleet before you do anything.

No I agree. I literally had to think ahead on what I needed to do to meet my objective when playing. How to flank my fighters to protect my capital ships and plan for multiple turns. It's like xwing but just in a larger scale

Or we could have real time battles, where both players operate their fleets as fast as they can independently of the other the player and the player with the fastest reactions, decision making process, and knowledge of their ships and the rules of engagement will win.

Or we could not have a heart attack inducing game and just switch off ship for ship, like boardgaming gentlemen. It's that happy medium that doesn't seem quite right but is still better than either of the extreme alternatives.

That's my favorite part! Planning for multiple turns makes this game. The ISD got me into the game, the command dials keep me here.

OR THEY COULD BE WIND UP SHIPS!!!!!
