Road to Legend: Questions about Campaigns and Conversion Kit

By Iota, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Is the Conversion Kit an available selection as part of your collection? I would love to be able to use all of those old heroes and monsters!

I was surprised The Shadow Rune campaign from the base set wasn't available to play, which made me wonder if there plans to include campaigns from the physical box sets, or are they just not translatable to the app for some reason?

Also, how do the two available campaigns (Rise of the Goblins and Kindred Fire) compare to box set campaigns (e.g. The Shadow Rune, Lair of the Wyrm, etc.)? If I enjoy being Overlord and want to run a campaign with a grand scope, would I be better served using one of the campaigns that came with the base box?

One last question: does using the app actually speed up game play (including set up time)?

Hi,

1. The conversion kit is not supported by RtL. This was one of my main questions as well. But if you check the RtL rules (PDF), it directly states it's not supported. Mostly because some of the characters and monsters were re-released (with changes) in the hero and monster packs. But to be honest, I just tell the app that I own all of the extra packs and use the cards from the conversion kit anyway. To play fair, I also look up the changes online and note the differences.

2. I doubt they'll make the campaigns from the physical box sets into the app. Better to focus on new content. Also, the gameplay rules are just different enough that it makes those campaigns not work quite right.

3. If you want yo b the Overlord, you have to play with the physical box campaigns. The fundamental idea behind the RtL app is that it plays the overlord for you.

4. Setup and playtime seems to be about the same in my experience. Your meilage may vary.

2) 3) 4)

You have to realize that the RTL is not the same as a normal game of descent.

It just simulates the overlord, or rather a dumbed down version of it.

Because of that, the more objective focused quests from the physical game and it's expansions just wouldn't work.

The monsters just have one objective and that is to kill you, they are unaware of any quest based objectives.

If your biggest enjoyment comes from being the overlord, but don't like playing as heroes, you will not enjoy RTL, because there is no overlord.

The setup is different: Instead of setting it all up at once like in a normal (something you could do the day before), you set it up in parts, when new parts of the map get revealed. The setup is shown step by step (first map, then search tokens, then monsters,..) and the whole process is a bit tedious in my opinion.

I disagree, I find that if you head the advice of the app to set aside all the map tiles when doing initial set up for a quest it's just a matter of a few second to grab the next tiles and place them.

Also remember RtL does not use all compenents from the base game and expansions. A lot less cards to manage and shuffle.

Of course opinions will differ :) I know the app tells you in advance what tiles to use, but because its without images it takes a while to gather them compared to the 'one image that says all' in the campaign books.

And I personally just dislike the fact that the flow of the game gets broken up to much by the way its handled in the app. Just show me what I have to add in one go, tiles, tokens, monsters,.. instead of having to keep tapping next between them.

The co-ops did it that way, and I just found it faster and less flow breaking :) But again: my opinion.

And a very valid opinion it is my friend . You brought up something, that while it isn't that much of a big deal, does irk me ever so slightly.

Those **** search tokens placements after monster placements. It's a silly thing really, but they should tell me where all objective, villager and search tokens go before monsters since they sometimes end up standing on them :P
