It begins...

By Diabloelmo, in Star Wars: Armada

Today, my addiction begins in earnest - I have finally knuckled down and purchased the core set. It is, as all FFG products, an utter delight to unbox, and has whet my appetite for more!

Model-wise, the paint jobs aren't as clean and crisp as later products, but that is both to be expected and something that is easy enough to fix. In fact, I'm thinking that the Victory will be receiving some touch-up work in the form of some differently-shaded panels, to reinforce the image of an old, constantly-repaired bulldog of a ship that simply won't die.

My next purchase almost feels like a no-brainer - I need an ISD to be the centerpiece of my Imperial fleet, and then probably a Gladiator, and then...

Yeah, addiction really is the right word for it

Empire, huh?

Correct on both counts, though I'm rather taken with the MC30c and the Neb-B miniatures on the rebel side of things. Assault frigate still offends my sensibilities though, so any filthy rebel scum lists I'll be running will likely use the smaller ships available to them

Playing both is the best option! Most of my Rebel builds are, like you say, using the smaller ships. Fast, hit-and-run tactics are where the Rebels should be at!

The Assault Frigate offends everyone at first, after you start using it, you get a healthy respect for it and may even come to love it.

I found that if you pull the tail off and flip it, it looks much nicer.

Nebulon-B Gunlines work as well! You have to be smart with them but they work great. Not a list to try as a beginner since most have not learned the power of the Navigate command yet.

I came across a fleet concept that I liked the look of for Rebels, which is basically a pair of MC30s and a pair of Neb-Bs, backed up by a smattering of X-wings and Jan Ors. Seems like fun, not to mention rather cheaper than my Imperial aspirations of wanting ALL THE THINGS

Welcome

Oh and buy 10 squad packs of each to be the master and commander of 20 tie bombers, and 20 Y-wings (not that you will use them in a standard game)

Is there much risk of catastrophic failure in this procedure ?

Just enjoy the game and keep buying pointless numbers of each ship...... until you have no money left.

None, really.

The Rear set of fins are held on with a Circular shaped Peg, that was a cutout on top to force it to only sit one way (the correct way).

Half of that Circular Peg exists on either side of the seam-join. In effect, the rear fins also hold the ship together. However, its held together in so many other ways, its unimportant.

Cut it flush with the back of the hull - or, literally, snap it off. Either way. Not a big deal. Just be prepared to glue it back on in the configuration you want, and accept that once its glued back on, you will have to remove it later if you ever have a want or need to disassemble the Frigate Further.

Actually he easiest way which I did with all 3 of my Assault Frigates was to putt the tail off (its not held tightly) and shave the notch area till it is an oval with 2 flat sides. After that, put the tail on with the fins up and it kills off a lot of the negative space that was there.

Added benefit. The neb and mc30 expansion packs have a lot of really useful cards in them.

This game is in fledgling infancy compared to X-Wing, so with the right retailer and the right sales, there's a much lower barrier of entry to get one of everything. That means, with one of each Wave 1 expansion, you end up with two of the Galactic Civil War staples: two VSDs, CR90 Corvettes, Nebulon-B Escort Frigates, and tons of squadrons.

Start there, then decide what you want doubles or triples of.

This list is a lot of fun to play, and pretty competitive, to boot. Welcome to the community!

Do you have a picture of this? I hate the AF for its looks, but might buy one if I could make it look better.

If someone ever tells you that there is no reason to buy 3 Imperial Star Destroyers, then they aren't really your friend.

Cheers! I originally begun the collection with the intent of being mostly Imperial, since it was the Interdictor announcement that finally got me looking closer at the game. But with my FLGS having its spring kit tournament in a month, I might actually go for the above list first, since it is quite simply going to be cheaper to build in such a short time!

Yea, I think I can take a few.

I would also appreciate pictures of better looking AF.

This seems like a reasonable thread to ask in.

I have two of everything except the core set. Aside from wanting more squadron packs, I've had an itch to get one more of all of the small and medium ships (Do I want 3 ISDs? Obviously. Will I ever run them? That seems unlikely).

Problem is, I don't see myself running three Vics or AFs more than once for funsies. I'm most likely to get the other smalls, but with flotillas coming soon, I'm not sure having 4 nebs and cr90s, or 3 mc30s, Glads, and Raiders makes much sense either.

Are there really competitive or really fun lists for 3-4 of a single type of ship? My experience says 2-3 of any particular ship is enough to cover any situation, but my gut says "Shiny, shiny. More, more, more".
