[Rebel] Fat ghost & Jake

By namdoolb, in X-Wing Squad Lists

There's a long and rambling story about how this list came to be... But I won't bore you with that.

What I will say is that although I haven't had the chance to run this to a tournament yet, I have been able to fly it against a fairly decent cross-section of lists. So far it hasn't disappointed.

Kanan Jarrus (51 pts)

Ghost title

ion cannon turret

reinforced deflectors

Jan Ors

Recon specialist

Zeb Orellios (18 pts)

Phantom title

Jake Farrel (28 pts)

A-wing test pilot

Veteran instincts

Push the limit

Chardaan refit

Autothrusters

(Total 97 pts)

Basic doctrine for this list is that Kanan is the tank, and Jake is the flanker playing at being rebel soontir.

Kanan will go pretty much head to head with the enemy force, prioritizing any targets that might give Jake trouble in the late game. Jake will look for an angle of attack that exposes him to the least amount of fire, and will engage targets of opportunity as they present themselves. If all goes well Zeb will never have to undock.

The fun bit though is that because the two halves of the list are so radically different in their strengths and weaknesses (and can both move around quite well) you can gain quite a bit of advantage by withholding one from the engagement whilst the other moves in.

Decivader? Keep Jake at a safe distance & send the ghost to joust with it, you can very easily bring Jake into the fight when the time is right.

Lots of tlt's? Send Jake in first & make a slow approach with the ghost.

The only list that worries me slightly (that I haven't had the chance to line up a game against yet) is U-boats. Pretty much everything else I feel pretty confident against (depending on relative player skill of course)

Comments, questions, anything at all... Feel free.

I ran a similar style of build a couple days ago (it was a 150 point casual game, so the list won't really help you), but the big change is I ran Advanced Sensors on Kanan instead of Reinforced Deflectors. Kanan really wants his actions every turn with Recon Specialist and Jan Ors; I'd think that being able to do an action if you're doing a red maneuver or getting blocked would help his survivability more than the Deflectors. Then again, it really does depend on your meta and what kind of list you're facing; Sensors is definitely better against swarms and things like that, but Deflectors might be better against Uboats. Just throwing that out there as an option; I really can't tell which is better without playtesting.

Funny that, this list actually started life as one half of a list for a 200pt casual game.

I'll have to give the advanced sensors a try, I don't usually have much of a problem with bumping, but it would be nice to keep the action economy when I have to take red maneuvers (which does happen fairly often).

Don't know how much I'll miss the deflector, but as you say: Only playtesting will answer that.

I would be tempted to keep the Reinforced Deflectors. With Ordnance alpha strikes becoming more of a thing, I think their value will continue to increase (particularly once Imperial Veterans brings us the Gamma Squadron Veterans).

How much do you find you need the 3 point initiative bid? Obviously if you are facing Soontir then getting to move after the Ace of Tokens is a big must. But with more PS8 ships seeing use in the meta, I would be seriously tempted to upgrade Zeb to Raging Ezra. Obviously launching the shuttle is a last resort but Ezra + Rage does bring a lot more to the party than Zeb for those extra 3 points.

Yeah, the initiative bid is pretty important.

I was running the list with chewie instead of Jan (provides slightly better survivability and doesn't eat kanan's focus), but that was at 99 points... And Jake really wants to move last if he can.

Raging Ezra would hit quite a bit harder than Zeb, but then again the plan is to never have to launch Zeb.
