Token Replacement Pack Ideas

By trevorade, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but, once FFG wraps up their Descent expansions, it would be awesome if they released an expansion pack, similar to the Hero and Monster packs, but if it just contained miniatures that replace tokens already in the game. They've done this with the Lieutenants and some of the Allies, but there's more to be done!

Here's what I'd like to see:

  • 8 Villagers (4 men, 4 women) (Base Game)
  • 1 Reanimate Familiar (Base Game)
  • 3 Summoned Stone Familiars (Lair of the Wyrm)
  • 1 Wolf Familiar (Labyrinth of Ruin)
  • 1 Desmond Ally (Nature's Ire)
  • 1 Raven Flock Servant (Manor of Ravens)
  • 1 Scourge Servant (Chains That Rust)
  • 1 Brightblaze Familiar (Bonds of the Wild)

As a bonus, I think these could be made into miniatures. These are a bit more single use so I'd be less crushed if they skipped these.

  • 1 Desmond Ally (Nature's Ire)
  • 1 Cardinal (Shadow Rune)
  • 1 Tyrus (Heirs of Blood)

These tokens aren't really appropriate for miniatures, unfortunately:

  • Shadow Soul Familiar (Shadow of Nerekhall) (Occupies same space as other figures)
  • Skye Familiar (Bonds of the Wild) (Occupies same space as other figures)
  • Pico Familiar (Bonds of the Wild) (Never placed on the map)

Here are my ideas for some other things they could include:

  • Ornamental miniatures that would be placed outside the board or above existing obstacles:
    • Boulders (1 space boulder replacements)
    • Green trees
    • Brown dead trees
    • Stone pillars
  • Hero sheets for some of the Allies (E.g., Desmond)
  • A quest or two

Did I miss anything? Have any other ideas?

Familiars could be of some use since they are for most of them treated as miniature (so nothing really strange that there's not any in the first place)

for villagers, tough, since they are not often treated as minis (most of the time in fact), I don't thing it could be of some uses.

If the miniature could be sold as not just only the miniature, FFG would make it, so some sort of lieutenant pack (the mini would not be summonable if the mini is already used as a familiar) ?

But i'm almost sure that the "only figure" pack to replace some of the tokens is a dream that is not comming

I have made my own version of most of the above using Reaper Minis - they are the same size as the FFG models so fit in well.

For example, these work well for the villagers:

This as the Wolf familiar

I have this one for one of the reanimates

And so on (I have tons). I mostly get the Reaper Bones versions, as they are only £2 in the UK (or I guess about $3 in the US), and they do loads of different types, so I can normally find one that matches and get it painted up.

The full gallery is here (you'll see some Sci-fi ones on one of the early pages, but carry on through and it quickly go back to fantasy

Also, I bought some Dungeon Saga furniture packs, and have painted those up to go into the dungeons as I play - using the chests, bookcases, barrels and so on - to add a touch of character to the tiles.

Totally agree, that would be a great way to get some nice mini's if you don't live in a country that lives in the shipping range of these stores. I get that FFG didn't include all these minis, but the missing familiars is a shame. Although you could just use rocks for the summoned stones. Bit of paint maybe.

And about the props, go to the model trains/ war stores. These have very extensive collections of materials and tools to create your own landscape. There are also tons of video's online to get you started.
