Bid 349 points

By MattShadowlord, in Star Wars: Armada

Someone I know just won a local tournament with a 349 point fleet. Score: 29-1.

I've been keeping an eye on bids for player 1 as they drop, and 371 was the lowest I saw be successful before this. This one was apparently a bit of an accident (he forgot to bring some squadrons), but still he wanted player 1 and he got player 1, and the rest was history.

But seriously, 349? How low can we go? :D

What was his list?

What was his list?

MC30 Scout

Ackbar

Turbolaser Reroutes

Foresight

MC30 Torp

Lando

Enhanced Armanents

MC30 Torp

Enhanced Armanents

Admonition

CR90A

Turbolaser Reroutes

Jaina’s Light

Tycho

Enhanced Armament MC30s instead of ordnance and APT? Ginkapo, you're braver than I thought :D

Ok - OE without APT's = 4points used to add an average of 0.75pts for every broadside shot at close range. An MC30 is usually run at speed 3/4 and so gets 2 maybe 3 shots at close range. So to be precise, you are paying 4pts for 1.5damage per game.....

Now with APT's, OE becomes much more favourable, but again you are now paying 9 pts for 2.5 damage per game, potentially more if you get lucky on your front arc.

Now enhanced armanents with Ackbar is 10pts to add damage ALL game.

If you want dice manipulation, I direct you to sensor teams... turn those inevitable blanks into a brace block.... Oh look damage output doubled!

How did the game pan out? And what was the other guy's list?

Store Champs, where there were no Rhymer balls. (an important caveat)

Took on a MC80, Salvation, CR90 with rogues. Played advanced gunnery, and Lando gave up his life to destroy the MC80 in one turn. Tycho held the rogues up long enough to keep Admonition relatively undamaged. Tycho then ran away. 514 to 140 score.

Then a ISD, Demolisher, Raider list. Most wanted. Admo jumped Demo turn 1 to double arc severly breaking it before disappearing off to leave demo to be taken down by foresight from long range. From then on just kited the ships to death. Admonition sadly died as it ended up having to hang around the rear of the ISD too long with the most wanted token on it. Tycho died under 1 round of squad activations....

And finally another ISD, Demo, Raider list, with advanced gunnery on the Demo. Demo really struggled to catch speed 4 MC30's and eventually went off the table without the manouverability on an MC30. Raider was one shotted by Ackbar thanks to an insane roll. ISD was left stranded with no way of catching the swarm of stinging bees around it. 456 to 0 (Somehow Tycho survived)

Lesson learned, maybe I only need Tycho... it was his defence tokens which make him such a pain. Potentially might bring one of Han, Jan or Dutch to go with him. Han for his special skill, Jan for her ability to constantly run away from squads whilst using counter, or Dutch for shuting stuff down and high hull.

Awesome stuff, congrats on winning!

Haha, sure.

Congrats, dude! You're a mad genius and I love it! :D

Wave 3 edition coming to a vassal tourney near you, it has sensor teams too, just to laugh at all who think they are useless.

Sensor teams will do great with this list, as you get the 2 dice from Ackbar for it, you roll 2 blanks on your reds? It's fine, Sensor team to discard 1 blank to turn the other to accuracy :)

I have a 30 build that goes like this:

MC30 Torp.

OE

APT's

H9 Turbos.

Admon.

Really nice when I get 1 accuracy on the roll and then can grab a 2nd, amazing vs Gladiators, Block their redirect and Brace, enjoy taking all the damage from the blacks.

A DeMSu build could go down to 315 :D

A 98 pt Demo

3x Raider-Is w/APT

1 Raider-I naked (flagship)

That leaves you 33 pts on that 349 list! :D

However, Demolisher cant catch a speed 4 mc30. So outbid me all you like.

I'm not sure why you think this. Demo with Engine Techs has the same top speed as the MC30, is far more maneuverable, and has the minor advantage of shooting you at the end of every turn it gets kind of close to you.

I had my entire fleet literally solo'd this weekend by a Demolisher with initiative despite running at speed 4 for all I was worth. By "solo'd", I mean I wiped his entire fleet except Demo and then fled, and he tabled me.

I wasn't at your game so I obviously can't know, but successfully running away from a Demolisher that somebody flew off the board? That just doesn't scream "skilled Demolisher pilot" to me. It sounds to me like you beat Demolisher because you had initiative and activation advantage on it. Which is fine and doesn't detract from your victory (congrats on it, btw!), but it does detract from your point that an MC30 can escape Demolisher without initiative.

I think Bids can go lower and win, but I think that is a short term thing. Right now your not dealing with a large enough skill level in a larger player base.

If I had to characterize the current player base skill, from what I've seen, I think you would see it as a very sharp and tall pyramid. Lower skill at the bottom, higher skill at the top. Give the game some more months, and perhaps a year, and you will see it become much more a even slope and at that point, the chances of winning with huge bids will go away.

try building a 300pt fleet - full 100pt bid :D

What advantage can you possibly be looking for that is better than another corvette?!

The only one I can think of is bragging rights...

Alpha striking Demolisher is pretty **** valuable.

This.

And Ard, if Demo deploys near your MC30, the safest place to be is in its rear arc... Thats the secret. Run at it, not away.

I'm curious what the additional squadron composition was planned to look like. It is cool that he won despite forgetting squadrons, and that shows how powerful first player is in the right fleet, but even 371 leaves 22 points for more squadrons.

Sure, if Demolisher is pointed right at you and all you're interested in doing is positioning to run away and Demo is interested in killing something other than your MC30 for the round you need to pass him, then yes, you can blow past and delay just long enough to run out the game.

My point is, Demo's so much more maneuverable than the MC30, has more flexible speed than the MC30, and has the same max speed as the MC30, that for any given positioning situation, it has a very very good chance at running you down if you run at 4.

I'm not saying that for every possible positioning and every possible player, Demo will chase you down and kill you. I'm saying that it takes dramatically better flying on the MC30 player's part to run away than it takes on the Demo player's part to chase you down. This is a very significant problem.

I very much hope that the tools we're getting in W3/4 will address this issue; otherwise, Demolisher will likely drive me away from this game before too much longer. It has frustrated me for two entire waves now and I personally am pretty tired of it.
