Battlefleet Koronus Starwars armada concept

By thebob288, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm a big fan of the warhammer 40k rpgs and while I've been looking into the star wars armada and x-wing games respectively and think they both look really interesting I can't help but wish we had a warhammer 40k variant. The classic ship designs of the races of warhammer 40k would be great to see on a tabletop again and I would love to see something along the lines of a kickstarter to gauge interest or even just some good community made content.

Try taking GW IP on kickstarter and they will be all over you before you can say "lawyer". Sorry :(

Maybe if you name it "Strifemallet 3.14159265359" they woudln't catch on? Barring that, yeah IP issues are always a problem with things like this.

While I agree that a new 40K based space game with the mechanics of Armada would be cool, GW is one of the more litigious game companies. Take them on at your peril.

On the other hand, I think that it would be amazing to see Armasa as a stand alone D20 system, and then choose your game, with Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Battle Star Galactica, Honorverse, Firefly Verse, Heck even limited runs of SpellJammer (D&D in Space), Battletech, Ogre, Heavy Gear, Robotech, Starship Yamamoto, and others of those genera.

Some of them might be better in the Xwing system I guess.

The X-Wing system (Flightpath) is able to be licensed from FFG.

It however, is not open source.

You'd have to purchase a license to use it.

But the very possibility is why it exists outside of FFG in Star Trek Attack Wing, and D&D Attack Wing...

I would love to see a Babylon 5 version of Armada.

It's hard to say what's going to happen to the old GW specialist games. They did renew the licenses on everything, though that may have been for the video games (BFG and Mordheim have both released in the last year). And it seems like Forgeworld will be re-releasing Blood Bowl. So that guarantees three things: the rules will be great, the models will look amazing, the game will be stupid-expensive. Still, there's a chance GW might let FW have a go at BFG, too. Although I personally feel that they should license it out to FFG.

If you want a great Babylon 5 space combat game look up old copies of Babylon 5: A Call to Arms (by mongoose publishing). Prior to Armada it was my groups favorite space combat game. It has several very unique mechanics, in particular the beam weapons, boresighting lasers, and fleet composition were like nothing I have every seen before or since. But it also has several rules that will feel familiar to armada players, like movement restrictions, command orders, and brutal critical effects that can cripple a ship long before it burns its hull. If you try it, note that the fleets are not inherently balanced. As in the show, a Minbari, Shadow, or Vorlon fleet will wipe the floor with against everyone else, but unless you build for cheese, it is still a blast to see the iconic ships on the tabletop. Old copies of the game are pretty cheap and come with cardboard versions of the ships to wet your appetite with. If you like it the models are available on eBay, but expect to pay a pretty penny. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I just think a fleet of whitestars fighting Shadow spider ships would be nifty. Or some Minbari versus Earthforce.

I'll admit that I'd love the same thing to happen, but Armada has really spoiled me when it comes to model sizes. That and Granny Wendy sticker shock is even more murderous these days than my heyday.

But, I have been really thinking on finding a way to incorporate ships into Armada's base system (likely using the small, medium, and fighter bases) to outfit my 3,000 odd points of true Imperial glory. 40K's ships are still my favourite of any sci fi property bar none. That, and who knows what's up with the Specialist non-line these days. On the other hand, I was trying to decide if I wanted to pull the trigger on a pack of Firestorms and I think I very well might.

I see a lot of people talking about games workshop going ape if they tried this but the post assumed some level of GW cooperation. FFG has negotiated with them for rights of Warhammer for rpgs before and its not like games workshop is super tight with their Ip licensing everybody and their mother can make a warhammer game if they pay the fee. Since they abandoned their version of battle-fleet Gothic I don't see why they'd be opposed to taking a cut from a potential ffg version. I'm aware you can't just steal someones property but again games workshop always struck me as being in the money making business above all else. Why not tap into fantasy flight games recent success with x-wing and make some money from it. Also you guys are scared of GW in court? Disney would burn down Fantasy flight if they weren't getting a satisfactory deal out of x-wing. Don't see why this project couldn't happen as long as people show enough interest thus the kickstarter idea.
