Begging for XP Talent Trees

By RebelDave, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Ah, just go with Comic Sans and call it a day!

Euurgh! :P

As it stands, the current trees on Begging for XP cover everything except those in Special Modifications.

And unfortunately, anything I do to replicated Docs work I will be unable to share.

Sorry guys!

Why? Didn't he make it for the community for free? Haven't they been out there forever? Someone who knows how to make the sheets create new ones that are similar. What are you afraid of a lawsuit?

I know at least one person has stepped up and started putting together a new set of Talent Tree resources. I had considered doing the same, since I have a ton of free time, and I don't suspect it would take me more than a couple hours to do the base design plus an hour for each spec. Still, I'm with Joress. Having the original files (from Indesign or Illustrator or whatever was used) would make things a whole lot easier, even if the person continuing them didn't have the same fonts (since the fonts in the old ones could just be replaced with whatever fonts were chosen for the new ones).

If anyone is interested in collaboration on this, I'm happy to work with people to make sure this fan resource stays current.

I'm hugely interested in updated trees. Being able to easily print them and keep them with my character sheets is hugely useful - copying them from a book just never looks as clean.

Me too. But I have to find a way to help that doesn’t interfere with all my other responsibilities. ;(

Me too! And I have no problem wanting to still update the awesome work Doc has done. In fact, here is my first submission. Technician Modder tree . Enjoy!

Edit: Fixed couple typos and Resolve talent.

That looks really nice. How about adding the Career's career skills to it?

So for those of you who aren't as concerned with having a super fancy appearance, I built a neat Excel file for my own use. It's just run on a drop-down and the look isn't super fancy (it's polished for Excel, but it is still Excel). It has all the talent trees in it (through Savage Spirits) and it is proportioned to print each try correctly on a single page. You should be able to cut and paste from it as well.

So far, it is just talent trees. I plan to add signature abilities when I get the chance, and maybe Force powers.

If anyone is interested, I can figure out a way to post it somewhere...

I'd certainly be interested in this!

Here are my talent trees. If they seem useful, maybe I'll post a dedicated thread.

FYI - I made this in Excel 2016 but I checked compatibility back to Excel 2007. If you are using something older than that, or a non-MS Excel reader (like opening it in Google's preview or on mobile), the dropdown may not work right and the formatting may get screwed up.

Confirmed, the dropdown doesn't appear to work with Numbers either, but maybe that's a small tweak. Nice work!

Nice job Jaress. :) You probably should not use Doc the Weasel's style though, as I believe he does not want it spread everywhere. I appreciate the effort you likely put into this, but another style is needed.

Also, I have a recommendation for how to afford the various FFG books. WARNING! Not for everybody.

I tried the Elon Musk $2 a day challenge for two months. I did lots of research on how I could stay healthy while only doing $2 a day. I upped it to $2.50 a day. After two months of hearty potatoes, peanut butter sandwiches, and oatmeal I was able to afford all of the FFGSWRPG books. The absence of food also helped me lose weight. If you intend on doing this, make sure you do your research. I had to plan for roughly two weeks (finding the best deals, figuring separation of portions, and making sure I was getting proper nutrition.) Analyzing my caloric intake helped me understand how much I was eating. I decided to do some home exercises and by the end of those two months. I felt like a healthy person.

And that, my friends, is how the pursuit of RPG books has made me frugal and healthy.

Thanks. As far as Numbers goes, I don't have a Mac to check compatibility against or much experience working with anything but Excel. This is really something I built for my own use so I haven't gone out of my way to do tons of compatibility work.

That being said, I'm working on adding signature abilities now.

Because he specifically asked me NOT to replicate his own layout and style. Similar is a different argument, there are already similar ones out there.

Out of RESPECT to him, I chose not to.

Unfortunately, it seems some people have gone ahead, despite this, and ripped off his style anyway. INCLUDING leaving the Begging for XP logo on them. Which I personally find very disrespectful.

There are other styled trees out there, I wanted to keep the same style as his because of my OCD tendencies. And since he specifically asked that anything I did WAS NOT SHARED, he was happy for me to replicate them.

So, out of respect to Doc, I didn't, and I told everyone the same thing... and people have gone ahead and done it anyway.

If I were in his position, I would be rightly annoyed and offended, but there we go.

Doc the Weasel, my heart bleeds for you. I would hate to tell people not to do something, especially if that thing is integral to your profession, and then have people do it. I'll do my best to make sure people don't copy your style.

Ah, just go with Comic Sans and callit a day!

You can't control other people, only yourself. I appreciate you respecting Docs wishes. However, in my opinion, I think not letting people carry on the work is kind of selfish. These documents help the community enjoy the game. I assume that's why he made them and put them out there in the first place. I believe we should definitely give him his credit but if he doesn't want to keep creating them because of time/personal committments etc, others who are capable and willing should continue the work for the betterment of all. No one is being hurt by this.

I think this is getting blown out of proportion. Its not a big deal.

By all means, people can create their own, in their own style as many already have done/are doing. I know I have about 4 different styles in my Star Wars RPG Folder.

The point is someone copying his style after he has expressed his wishes for others not to copy his style .

By all means, people can create their own sheets. My point is about respecting the wishes of someone who clearly didnt want their style to be mimic'd.

I simply voiced my discomfort that people had flagrantly disregarded these wishes, and responded to the question "why won't you do it?" when is said I wouldn't be making any of my work public, because i had been asked to by the original artist .

But each to their own, if people are happy to steal another style regardless of the original creators wishes, that is indeed.. their choice.

Hopefully the ones I'm creating are deemed different enough in style.

The point is someone copying his style after he has expressed his wishes for others not to copy his style .

So, not to belabor the point, but " his style" is very derivative of what's in the books, so while I definitely agree one artist shouldn't steal another's work, it's an entirely different matter for each to make derivative works from the original source. I think there's enough creative folks in here that could get this done while respecting Doc's work and still remain true to the originals to which Doc's work can be attributed.

Yeah, I didn't reckon you did, I just wanted to throw that out there for the other folks trying it. Were I any sort of spreadsheet guru I'd take a stab at adapting it.

Indeed, but what has appeared in this thread, is basically his work but altered. Right down to the Begging for XP logo.
