Homebrew holdout slug thrower

By sonovabith, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

We're giving our usual GM a break and running a one-shot in his universe so he built a higher level big game hunter (the rest of the PCs are around 680 XP). His character only uses slug throwers, doesn't consider energy weapons to be sporting, but he wants a holdout pistol of which there are none of the slugthrower variety. I wanted to get some feedback on the holdout slug thrower we built for him. The idea is it's kind of the final weapon on a hunt to land the killing blow and has to penetrate thick beast hides, but Derringer sized.

Czerka Model 38 "Short Shot"

Damage: 4

Crit: 3

Range: Short

Enc.: 1

Pierce 2, Limited Ammo 2.

Cost: 650

Crit 3 is a rating more in line with energy weapons. Typically slugthrowers have a Crit of around 4 or 5. Only exception are especially nasty slugthrowers that do things like shoot dozens of darts, shards of glass, or are actual more like railguns....

I'd also drop the limited ammo unless you up something else. Generally they don't worry about it even for slug throwers unless it's a big dirty harry gun. https://fringes-of-space.obsidianportal.com/wikis/xet-industries-model-c-fiver-self-defense-pistol Other than that it is looks pretty in line with what is out there.

PS: What kinda qualities is the player looking for for his hand gun? There are a decent few floating around the books so just wondering what would constitute a 'holdout' slugthrower vs one of the pistols in print. If anyone has it you could also take a look at the new crafting rules. There are guidelines in the back for setting a selling price so you could just 'build' a weapon using the charts and then check to see the base sales cost from the guy selling it.

Really he just said he wanted a holdout weapon; he already has the flechette launcher as his "sidearm." We were just trying to come up with something fairly powerful so he didn't feel way behind the rest of the PCs that we've been playing on and off for 3 years. Good idea on the crafting rules. They're new enough it didn't even occur to me to do it that way.

You could change the Limited Ammo to Linked 1 for a heavy hitting compact pistol. Then give it the "3 Threat to run out of ammo" seen on some of the other powerful guns. Definitely change the Crit rating to 4 to be more in line with other slug throwers

Ooh, I like the linked idea. Thanks!

You could also take the stats for a standard slug thrower pistol and reduce the damage by 1 and drop the cost by 50 to 100

Most of your holdouts have a "Add setback to perception check to detect weapon" feature. Whatever you cook up, you'll want that ability.

You are totally right. Thanks for reminding me.

The Verpine Shatter Pistol is a good slugthrower.
