Two questions about fear!

By kingpin000, in Game Masters

Hi there,

1. Which fear difficulty would you determine for a military grade chemical weapon, which causes panic attacks at the victims?

2. How would you handle the fear difficulty of the first question with an enemy, who has the talent Fearsome?

Thanks in advance!

1. I would use formidable simply because chemical weapons itself should be a terrifying thing and this case is actually build to terrify you on top of it ^-^

2. I would not make an fear check, but instead allow the enemy to make an opposed coercion check, because that should usually bring the better results. Though if you want to use fearsome the the talent description is clear: Each rank in fearsome adds one purple dice. It kind of a weak talent really, aimed imho at minions. Intimidating is where the coercion strength is hidden at least for opposed checks.

1. Since it's homebrewed whatever you want.

2. I wouldn't combine them, I'd have one base difficulty with setbacks or upgrades.

Just a plain formidable check or with upgrades?

I would agree with the pirate about taking whatever check you have (formidable?) and upgrading it.

Also, if this becomes a recurring thing, the PCs might be even more terrified of it the second time, knowing the effects.

The first time they see it, maybe it's only daunting. The second time, Formidable.

The chemical could instead require a Resistance check to prevent its effects, then if they fail that a Fear check as they co bonkers. perhaps a Hard check for the Resilience upgraded due to the consequences of failure and the nature of the drug. Then Formidable for the Fear check.
