Tortoise and the Hare - Newbie Rebel List

By SoonerTed, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I am extremely new to Armada, but I was curious as this concept might work. Constructive criticism is welcome. I have no idea about objectives yet.

Use the Tortoise Group head-on at the enemy, and use the Hare to attack and harass the rear and flanks of the enemy. A-Wings can be used to hit enemy bomber groups from the rear as well. Jaina's Light serves as the medic for the "Hare", and the Tantive IV is the squad Group Leader

"The Tortoise" Group

  • Nebulon B Support Refit
  • GR-75 Combat Retrofit
  • X-Wing Squadron (x3)
  • Y-Wing Squadron (x3)

"The Hare" Group

  • CR90 Corvette B (x2)
  • CR90 Corvette A
  • A-Wing Squadron (x2)

Fleet created with Armada Warlords

I posted this on Friday but I just got approved to post in the forums. I'd love to hear feedback.

I'll my comment into 2 sections: comments on how the fleet would work as is, suggestions for your fleet as is.

I.

I like the idea of a medic flying with your Hares-it sounds thematically fun. Jaina's light is good for being able to hide and still take pot shots, but the issue remains that all three of those ships remain subject to one-shots from certain ships and double arc deaths from most others, even with Mon Mothma. They could last a round at medium range and maybe at close range depending on the ship, but the prevalence of XI7 turbolasers combined with Intel Officer and Gunnery Teams will quickly get rid of those defense tokens. So you have to be exacting with your maneuvers to get all 3 of those into the same arc of your target ship. Engine techs will help with that.

The only real problem that I will make suggestions for changing is how "juicy" of a target it is. 3 small ships comprise close to half of your fleet points (200 exactly with the A-wings) and over half of your ship activations, so most opponents would easily want to start by taking these first. Once the first one goes down you will quickly start to lose your edge if you can't come back with a ship kill of your own.

Your Tortoises present a great threat to your opponent, albeit mitigated. You only have a total of 3 squadron commands available between Salvation and Bright Hope for the 6 squadrons in the group, but I would assume Salavtion will not be doing that. So 2 is your total, 3 with a token. This does not give your fighter force much flexibility or alpha striking capability. Perhaps that is what you counted on, letting your opponent come to your Tortoises, but they could always choose to go after the Hares first, while your tortoises are mostly unable to help (with the exception of Salavation's sniping). Alternatively, your fighter force remains highly susceptible to a dedicated enemy AS fighter force without heroes on your side. The X-wings are powerful and can usually survive 2 or 3 attacks while dishing out some punishment on their own, but they have no support as you only have the flotilla available to make AS attacks. Salvation might occasionally pitch in, but that is highly unlikely with Slaved Turrets. If your opponent did not prepare for your fighter force, however, then I suspect that they will regret it.

Objectives: Intel Sweep is perfect for this list, essentially getting your opponent to concede 75 points to you. Precision Strike is a logical choice with your bombers. Hyperspace Assault, I would assume, takes either Bright Hope with the Ys or Salvation with a small fighter screen into Hyperspace. The problem with Salvation is that it loves this objective (it wants to hyperspace in behind your opponent), but it also has Mon Mothma. You can't have Mon Mothma's effect until she is on the board. The problem with taking Bright Hope is that Salvation will be all alone. In light of your desire to play the Tortoise, fire lanes might be a better objective by forcing your opponent to come to you. Granted, your tortoise won't have enough firepower to win those tokens once an ISD comes into range, but that ISD would pay dearly for driving into your bombers. Maybe. But maybe Hyperspace is worth not taking that risk. Just a thought

I ran a "Tortoise and Hare " list of my own the other day, albeit with only 2 fighters and with Rieekan instead of Mon Mothma. It ran very well, often causing my opponents a lot of headaches as they struggled to figure out how best to deal with so many threats from so many sides. Fighter swarms were always held up by Han and Dash for at least 2 rounds, sometimes 3 due to Rieekan. My Nebs both crawled slowly (for the most part) while my corvette swarm swooped around the back or made a front pass before swooping around the back. As I was playing with Rieekan, I didn't care about survivability and I often rammed my opponent to death. I believe that your list will cause very similar headaches, causing your opponents to slip up and make mistakes.

II.

The Corvettes in this list are upgrade heavy, making them attractive, mostly-easy targets. You have built them to be survivable, when they really should be more of a low-cost constant nuisance to your opponent. Most opponents will probably go for these first, as the Tortoise will probably no be able to support them fast enough. Perhaps the survivability ploy will work, but I suspect that they will crumble to any list running a fully loaded Demolisher, maybe even just Insidious. Additionally, you have sunk a lot of points into ships that will maybe get off 2 shots per enemy ship per game (hit and run tactics). Those shots need to count without relying on critical effects.

In light of that, you should consider lowering their upgrade costs. Overload Pulse is great for whittling down defense tokens, but the corvettes won't be doing significant damage with any single attack for those to make a difference. SW7 Ions put out more damage, is more reliable, and costs less. The Engine Techs may be a bit excessive. Getting rid of those could make more room for a couple heroes in your Tortoise squadrons, but corvettes are definitely more fun with the engine techs. That's up to you. I always love to run Raymus with Tantive, and it works for your strategy here. Just know that he will probably be the first to die, followed shortly thereafter by Dodonna's Pride. Dodonna's pride also works well with Leading Shots or SW7 Ions (in case you don't get the first crit). Projection experts and redundant shields is a cool combo, but it seems counter intuitive to place it on a corvette. If you can use the hit and run tactics with the Hares well enough, I think Jainas Light would be better served with Turbolaser Reroute Circuits. Otherwise, I say give it a try and let us know how it works.

Your Tortoise group wants Jan Ors to join them. No, it needs Jan. Jan, Jan, Jan... Can't you here those Xs chanting? "Oh the Exes, they want me," she says. That is the only suggestion that I absolutely say you must make to this list. Find a way to put Jan Ors in there. Another good improvement would be either Boosted Comms or Expanded Hangars on Bright Hope and reducing it to the 18 point version. The final issue I see having Mon Mothma on Salvation. You don't really have many good options for where to place her in this list. If your opponent chooses to go for the tortoise first, Salvation will be the first to go, and it will go quickly, leaving everything else to fend for themselves. I don't really know how to deal with that in this list.

Ultimately, 400 points worth of ships and squadrons is 400 points of pain that your opponent must overcome. As long as you have a plan, an emergency plan, and a knack for reacting to your opponent's plan, you will have a fun, engaging game.

I like it. Could be fun.

Couple of things though. Projection experts and redundant shields are a bit too expensive for a corvette.

Also you don't really have enough squadron commands for all your fighters to make them effective....especially since your corvettes will be wanting to navigate or conc fire mostly as well as salvation.

Also not a huge fan of overload pulse. Try drop a few upgrades to maybe get an assault frigate in or some more GR75s

Maybe also drop down to normal GR75 as I don't think the retrofit is worth it.

A standard GR75 with expanded hanger bays can command 3 squadrons or 4 with a token and it's cheaper than a combat retrofit.

The overall concept is good. The finished product less so.

The Hare:

Fast ship with minimal upgrades. In this case Cr90A's with TRCs or CR90B's with sw7s work best. Jaina is the only over upgrade i would consider.

With squadrons, go for rogues rather than A wings.

Tortise:

You want to be able to hammer hard here. Yavaris is the king of this on a neb escort. If you can combine with another carrier with Adar Tallon its even better. BCC will help on bright hope, but above all you want Bwings or Scurrgs with jan orrs and a sprinkle of escort xwings to hit HARD.

Good list, and one thing is for certain- it looks fun to fly.

That is enough for me 6 days out of the week. So that said, the goal of most of the advice here is how you could take the list you have and sharpen it into the most competitive list possible. It doesn't mean that some of the fun might be taken out of the list. If you are playing with your buddies, I whole heartily support trolling them with the shield-medic 'vette. It's awesome.

That said, I think if you want to trim the list for a competition, listening to the advice here is a good idea. Trim the extra upgrades, and run the most efficient list you can.
