Tie Fighter

By Benvader, in X-Wing

I hereby submit a formal request to change the name of this game from Xwing to Tie Fighter. It was a better video game and just by name alone will make Tie Fighter (formerly known as Xwing) the greatest game bar none on history!

I disagree on the video game. Tie Fighter was a great game and added some nice wrinkles, but some parts were just too unbalanced. It was impossible to hit large ships with ordnance, making the bombers a pain in the butt to use. The move to targeting components on ships was good, but made it too easy to neuter the capital ships and just sit there and blast them away. It's not realistic that a bunch of hits on a shuttle doesn't disable its weapons, but a few hits on a huge turbolaser takes it out permanently.

X-Wing Alliance was the crowning jewel of those games and balanced out the game based on lessons learned from the previous ones. Plus, being able to fly Firesprays and pretty much any craft you wanted was sweet.

EDIT: The overall series of games was absolutely fantastic though. Anyone who hasn't played should find a cheap joystick and grab the games from Steam, Humble Bundle, etc... Between the whole series, there are hundreds of hours of fun.

Seems just like this game!

Would be cool to see a PhotoShop challenge for "TIE Fighter The Miniatures Game Core Set" box....

...or a Scum core set. Actually that would be really cool as a real release.

Seconded!

Hitting large ships with ordnance was impossible? Are we speaking of the same game? I loved to smash heavy rockets upon those slow, defenseless targets.

Unbalance came later with the introduction of the Tie Defender but until then.. the game was extremely balanced, even more considering that a simple collision could kill your fighter.

the game's actual name is

Star Wars Episode 3/8ths, the miniatures game

the green dice menace

On more than one instance I took out an entire enemy capital ship with just a Defender. To be fair I also did the same thing to Star Destroyers in the original X-wing, it was just a little trickier since you couldn't blast off the turbo lasers first.

When it comes to killing capital ships with your lasers the game left quite much to be desired and X-Wing Alliance dealt with this problem pretty well.

When it comes to the missions, storyline, fighters you could fly the only problem was TIE Defender, but still missions were difficult enough to make flying this fighter a challenge - not to mention flying against it... unless you had the Missile Boat of course.

I recall one of the last missions when my TIE Avenger had to run awa... make a quick tactical withdrawal flying around Thrawn's SD so those blasted TIE Defenders couldn't use their weapons and kill me.

Still the greatest hit was the mission with TIE Interceptor where you couldn't afford to use your lasers because of speen you had to provide escaping traitor TIE Avengers, Interceptors, identifying targets, avoiding mines etc... Good times.

By those good times I mean the last month because I bought it on GOG just like the entire rest and played like it was 15 years ago.

I have to agree.

Some of the mechanics of Alliance was better, but the story for TIE Fighter rocked.

You start off as part of a benevolent empire stopping two warring races from destroying each other. (Read what the US was doing in the time) then you start down that slippery slope. Start tattooing your arm. Getting involved in Imperial infighting. And working for Thrawn.

If they were defenseless, then you're correct, but I was referring to the large ships with defenses. If the large ship had lasers, you had to launch at point blank range or else the ordnance would be blown out of the air. This could still happen in Alliance, but it seemed to be toned down so that capital ships could take out some, but not all of the ordnance. In TIE Fighter, launching ordnance at range was an exercise in futility.

The original X-wing didn't have damage from engine wash though, so if you were careful, you could fly into a blindspot right behind the engines and be safe from the lasers while you pounded away at the ships. While this exploit is arguably worse than the disarming ships in TIE Fighter, it could only be done at the very end of the battle when everything else was destroyed, where ships could be disarmed in TIE Fighter at any time.

TIE Fighter is the perfect title of this game. Isn't the Academy Pilot the benchmark for effeciency in this game? Aren't there more TIEs than any other type of ship?

Soon there will be three TIE Fighter models. That right there should tell you whose game it is.

No Rouge Squadron love? One of my favs besides Golden Eye for N64.

Just want to give a shoutout to Wing-Commander-loyalists out there.

Yeah now wing commander is an awesome game.

I liked X-wing better than TIE fighter. VIVA la rebellion!

My favorites were TIE Fighter and XvT

X-Wing Alliance was good but I didn't love the campaign as much. X-Wing feels practically unplayable, but TIE Fighter got some crucial upgrades that make it still hold up well.

The reason to switch the name of this game to TIE Fighter is pretty obvious. You see far more TIE Fighters in game play than you see the so called X-Wings upon which the game is named.

When it comes to the video games I sadly missed TIE Fighter but played the other three and their expansions. X-Wing Alliance was pretty much the best but then it should be as it is based on everything learned from the previous games. As for targeting those capital ships with ordnance the best thing I found was to just dumb fire ordnance and/or take out the **** missile launcher, which fired those annoying anti-missile missiles, before engaging otherwise.

When it comes to kills I once took out a SUPER Star Destroy using only a B-Wing. Use the exploits to easily disable the shields and then quickly ionize it to keep if from shooting back at you or running away and then just sit there as chip away at those hp for a LONG time. Just park and set shields and weapons to full charge and hope they can keep up.

While the X-Wing and B-Wings both had more laser power I always found the Y-Wing and A-Wing far more accurate to shoot with. That had everything to do with laser location where the closer to the center the weapons were the easier it is to get hits at range. This was true in the real world as well where the P-39's were great at long range shooting with their nose mounted weapons while the wing mounted weapons on things like the P-51 could run into convergence issues that only gave them one good firing range.

I agree I mean it's not like x-wing's even get flown they may as well have the games namesake be a ship that's actually seen.

Seconded. TIE fighter is the new black.

I'll be even more contrarian and say that while TIE fighter had a great story, Freespace 2 blew it out of the water.

There was a freespace 2?

Does that turn things into a Black TIE Fighter event?

I do have Freespace which I recall to be very similar to the X-Wing series but I don't think I played Freespace 2 unless it had a different name.

... No!

Don't you all see?! This could be it!

TIE Fighter, the Advanced X-Wing Miniatures Game.

More in depth rules, rules for creating your own pilots with experience systems, missions and roleplaying elements. More tactical depth and more strategy in list building and on the mat. It would be completely compatible with the current X-Wing line, another core set that gives you everything you need to play. You wouldn't have to change anything, X-Wing could remain as it is and TIE Fighter could be like a rules expansion that takes the core game and expands on it. Think of X-Wing as the fantasy space battle game while TIE Fighter would be more like the historical space battles. More like an X-Wing hard-mode or something!

I think that would be ******* awesome as hell.
