What do people want from a Gunship?

By Karhedron, in X-Wing

For the Gunboat I would like to see, statwise

0 attack

1 agi

3 hull

2 shields

Slam action, target lock, focus

System slot, 2 missile, 2 torpedo

And a slow dial.

Seriously? While it may not have had as much firepower as a TIE Defender, the Gunboat could still pack a punch! How in the world do you figure on 0 attack for it?

And since when do Gunboats have a SLAM system? Are you sure you're not thinking of a Missile Boat?

I would had thought that the gunship should be a perfectly viable ship when not loaded with torps/missiles. Thats the difference to me from the punisher.

Gunship?

Sure, I guess we could have that in the game. Would be an interesting one to design.

I would love to see a LAAT as the next large base rebel ship, much more than another turreted YT series freighter (like the YT-2000)

Oh, probably, it's been a while and there wasn't a whole lot of difference.

a dial, model and tokens.

No pilot cards? I see what you did there Cubanboy! :P

I'm astonished the imperial lander hasn't featured in X-Wing

The Sentinel? Well, it IS a canon ship, I guess. But like Kylo's Upsilon-class Shuttle it's also pretty huge - probably around Ghost size? I can see them doing one or the other. Kylo's is probably more likely.

I don't have anything against either ship mind you, and the Imperials are definitely lagging behind the other two factions when it comes to large-based ships.

Now we are f**king talking! I want all of these!

The thing about Kylo's shuttle is that its wings are really freaking tall.

I feel like your gun boat should have crew/copilot at least.

I feel like your gun boat should have crew/copilot at least.

It's always been a one-man snubfighter though Cubanboy. Even it's latest depiction (in FFG's own Edge of the Empire) omits crew:

Alpha-Class XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat (game rules omitted)
"Designed by Cygnus Spaceworks, the Alpha-class Xg-1 Assault Gunboat is a multipurpose starfighter, excelling at space and planetary attack, interdiction and long-range reconnaissance and patrol. Unlike the more common TIE series, the Alpha-class is equipped with heavy armour, deflector shields and hyperdrives, though these come at the cost of speed and maneuverability, making it a less than stellar dogfighter. Heavily armed, the Star Wing is more than a match for most threats, disabling them with it's ion cannons to allow for boarding actions or blasting them out of space with it's lasers and concussion missiles. While used primarily by the Imperial Navy, Star Wings have begun to be employed by Imperial Customs and some planetary defense forces."
Hull Type/Class: Assault Starfighter/Alpha-class.
Manufacturer: Cygnus Spaceworks
Ship's Complement: One pilot
Passenger Capacity: 0
Weapons: Forward-mounted medium laser cannons, forward mounted ion cannons, forward mounted concussion missile launchers

I see the gun-ship as being closer to the B-Wing than the Punisher. A heavy, upgradeable, cannon-based craft.

I see the Missile Boat as more analogous to the Punisher.

If the Imperials could take the B wing you would be correct.

I hope they do bring it into he game and they make it terrible, so then we can listen to all the fanboys whine for XG-1 fixes, because that would be awesome. I hope the do make it 0-1 Primary weapon attack, Bobba will have his target every time.

If you want to talk stat lines, all the Imperial ships are fairly flimsy but decent agility. You want to fly a beefy ship that can take cannons? Fly a B Wing. The XG-1 if it ever comes out will have a similar stat line to a B Wing with less shields and maybe a few extra hull points.

And FourDogs, just because you may say Could of doesn't mean it's correct.

The Imperials are lagging? Let's see:

Rebels: YT-1300, YT-2400, Ghost

Imperials: Firespray, Lambda Shuttle, Decimator

Scum: Firespray*, Aggressor, YV-666, Jumpmaster, upcoming ship.

Maybe you want to say the Empire is lagging because the Scum also get to use the Firespray but the Empire has just as much access to large ships as the Rebels get. It's the Scum faction which seems to be getting the lion's share of the large ships.

The Assault Gunboat should have a point cost somewhere between the Y-wing and B-wing, and stats similar to a Y-wing but with a little better mobility and better shields. Or at least that would roughly approximate how it was in the games.

A docking clamp would be cool.

Oh, probably, it's been a while and there wasn't a whole lot of difference.

Are you kidding? That's like saying, "There wasn't much difference between a TIE Bomber and a TIE Defender!" The two were completely different craft that served entirely different roles!

Similarities between Gunboat and Missile Boat: Both carried ordnance. Both have shields.

Notable differences between Gunboat and Missile Boat: Gunboat had Ion Cannons and laser systems that were actually threatening. Missile Boat was much faster and maneuverable. Missile Boat carried a LOT more ordnance.

While they have their differences I'm not entirely sure they served two entirely different roles but how they would perform the "attack with ordnance role" would be a bit different. The Gunboat could be expected to fight its way in, unload, and do some more fighting afterwards. The Missile Boat is pretty much the definition of ZOOM & BOOM as it uses its missiles and other ordnance on everything and uses its speed as best it can.

The Gunboat was cheap, durable and multi-purpose - it was routinely deployed for it's ion cannons as much as it was for it's ordnance. It was essentially an Imperial BTL-A4 Y-Wing equivalent.

The Missile Boat was designed to combat the TIE Defenders stolen by Zaarin's defectors, and was a state-of-the-art starfighter sporting more shields, better maneuverability and speed, a SLAM drive, Tractor Beam/Jamming Beam and carried enough ordnance to flatten a capital ship. It was the King Hell God Emperor Starfighter Of Death, and you can't fly it yet.

They can still perform the same role although the Gunboat easily fills a LOT more roles than the relatively narrow Missile Boat.

Hah. Solid reference dude.
