Woops, play area issue

By Sybreed, in Star Wars: Armada

Well, I just moved in with my girlfriend in a new condo with much more space and I thought I could use the space to organize Armada matches. Turns out, my dining table is not exactly the required size for Armada, literally inches are missing (it's something like 2"8' x 5"8').

I'm pretty disappointed by this, because I can't really play in stores because of my work schedule. So huh, does anyone play on their floors xD? 'Cause that's literally my only option left.

You could make a table topper, like just buy the right size foam and slap it on top of the table for a cheap solution, and also frame it with 2x4s if you're feeling adventurous. Some of our FLGSes do that as well.

GO to Lowes/Home Depot and get a board cut to the correct size or a little bit bigger. Next have it cut it into 1/3 pieces and install sliding latches to the bottom so you can fold the board open and lock it into place. (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31HrEZlQHvL.jpg)

This is the same idea about built out as a table which would cost more.

I'd recommend a topper. MDF plywood is cheap, but birch is lighter and looks nicer. Felt can be had cheaply or just staple a bedsheet to it.

Also recommended is building it 4X6 so each side has 6" to put their cards down on. Big help doing that.

I swear I have the exact same ridiculous dimensions for a folding table I typically used in pairs for 40K. As Caldais said, table toppers are great. My favorite type is still MDF plates with a latch.

That way it folds and you can paint the thing or lay some black felt down. 3 2X3 sections or 2 3X3's are easy to store as well. Just as a bit of a 'FYI' if you do decide to make a latch to put on the bottom (because you want to paint it), and you value your real table, think about getting some of those thick felt sticky pads to avoid scuffing up your table top. It can also keep it from moving too much if it gets nudged.

hey that's not a bad idea. It solves the problem of having the entire thing not fitting inside my car. Mind you, I learned after taking my lease that foldable seats are an option on my brand of car... but hey, thx for the suggestion. For the sliding latches, are these difficult to install? I'm not the most manual guy in the world.

Here's the general gist of what I was talking about, though Cubanboy's is pretty sweet:

That one is pretty great for saving space cause the topper can slide into a closet or something when not in use.

this is pretty neat, but I need something that takes as little time to assemble as possible. My play time is small enough as it is, I don't want to waste too much on building a playable table :S

You could always just buy the foam and use that without the frame. Up to you, though. I would think it might still be better than crouching over the floor, but maybe not?

yes that's something I'm considering. Tricky part is actually getting that foam inside my car.

hmm yeah, storing is also important. Having a 2 x 3x3 seems a good tradeoff. Did you have any difficulty to make the latch? I'm wondering if I can't do the same thing with solid foam.

Y'know, I just have a plywood table in my basement. But now that post about a fancier table has me thinking. . .

I stole that pic from reddit. its 4 screws for each mounting based on the ones you get. It would be a piece of cake, though if you go to lowes or depot ask the people for thoughts and help, if you go on a not busy day most people love to not be bored, well at my stores anyway its true.

Use 3 3x2 MDF boards with felt covering them... Put on top of your dinner or coffee table. Use 2 mats and you have your game. This is what I do. Or just use 2 of the boards for Xwing. I do not latch the board or anything. Just put them close together. Never had any issues with bumping unless you plan on wresting while you play.

While I think table toppers and the rest are great. I made my own 4x6 table for games like Flames of War and 40k which work great for games with a smaller footprint like X-Wing or Armada... I don't know that I'd worry about the missing inch per side myself.

My friend and I put felt on a 4'x6' piece of cheap particle board, and it is cheap without being crappy. One downside, it is a cat hair magnet. All of our engagements happen in the Furball Nebula.

My first 40k tabletopper was a massive sheet of corflute that I got from a sign company, that I just ran a knife down to cut one side of it at the thirds mark, so it folded.

Yes

I've got a 6x4 gaming mat. Not the finest of mats, but it's covered in stars.

I have to rearrange the furniture a little, and it can be a bit of a squeeze, but the joy of the game makes it worthwhile. Right now I'm working on making MY room game friendly so that I can have a little more space.

The length is close enough.

Bit out there, but a 4ft wide bamboo slat roll matt may provide a strurdy extension to your existing table.

I have a topper that is exactly this. 2 3x3 plywood sheets held together by two hinges (each hinge takes four screws). The guys at Home Depot cut the wood for me, and it took me 10 minutes to put the hinges on. BAM! Done.

It's plain plywood so I put some books on my table (as padding) before putting the topper on. Easy, cheap, and it works!

I haven't built one of these, but I have to think it's worth the money to use a lighter plywood

Birchwood is probably your best bet for the topper. It's pretty firm, and much lighter than MDF plywood. The trade-off is, it warps if it gets wet, so you'll want to seal it or at least put a tablecloth or some felt over it. Half inch thick topper is just as sturdy as any three-quarter inch MDF is.

Or, you know you could just play on the table and not worry about 2-freaking-inches. A lot of my games have been on 5'x4' playing surfaces.
