MPG's Armada Repaints

By MPG, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

So, I guess this is where I will start posting all of my repaints seeing as the community painting thread is now obsolete. I currently don't have very many ships, at least not as many as I do in X-Wing.

I'll start with my favorite selection of ships, those found in SW: Rebels Blue corvettes are the best! . So far I have the 3 main corvettes and 2 squadrons of A-wings, which will hopefully grow in due time (2 squadrons of A-wings aren't enough :) ) They're not too glamorous close up, but they do the job well from a normal viewpoint.

The most basic corvette, which is just a blue palette swap of the regular CR-90.

The Mcquarrie corvette (I call it the Arrowhead). I've always had a lot of bad luck with this design. I get it perfect then Whoops! you guessed it! I drop the model and the peg breaks, which has happened to me twice now. <_< Despite this, it is still my favorite of the bunch.

The Liberator is the last one, you may have already seen this one multiple times in the old community painting thread. I have made some minor tweaks since then, like adding another layer of blue, and adding the dirt into the right most engine block.

My two A-wing squadrons. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't dreading having to do these (they're much smaller than they look), but it ended up being more fun than I thought it would be. I am definitely getting another pack next time I go to the game store.

Next comes another "separate" rebel fleet, with my MC80 (Tranquility) and Nebulon-B (Elysium). I am still in the process of painting the squadrons for it.

My ISD-II Deception. My Imps are in need of an actual fleet. I definitely want to get another ISD so I can convert it into an ISD-I, and some Arquitens and Gozantis are definitely on the list.

Love these. They are the style of repaints that I love. Discrete but perfectly recognizable.

Ha! Yes, I dreaded doing my first couple of A-wings, but now I want more! Great fighter to paint

Just echoing Dras, the ships are nice and distinct which helps them really pop on the tabletop. They look exactly like Rebel ships should (or garrison forces for that matter). Oh, and another +1 'well done' for the Rebels paint scheme. You're right MPG, blue corvettes are the best :P Likewise, couldn't agree more about the 'Arrowhead'. It's one of my absolute favourite patterns and you pulled it off great. And you did the same for the blue A-wings. Looking great and the names sound great.

Seriously mate, well done :) Can't wait to see more!

Thanks you guys!

I've never really liked the way my larger ships came out. The MC80 had some places where the wash started pooling, and I've never been satisfied with the ISD because it was both too dark, and it appeared very dirty in some areas, especially the bridge. So I stripped the paint off of both models and started fresh.

kS0R3SH.jpg

The ISD just got a quick light gray paint job (the camera makes it look brighter than it actually is). There were some places where the old wash in the panel lines showed through, which gave a sort of pre-shading effect. I like the balance between the gray and the panel lines much better this way.

khxqfuF.jpg

The MC-80 has gotten a touch of color, and a better contrast in the gray and ivory. This was there before, but the colors were too similar for the effect to be seen. I also drybrushed the panels to both remove pooling and add some slight highlights. The engines have also been darkened to stand out from the hull, unlike before.

That little bit of extra colour just sets the MC80 right over the top. Yep, major improvement even if I did like the last as well.

Thank you Vykes!

I made an impulse buy on a Raider (There were no CR-90s available). I started the repaint just to lighten up the grey to match my Star Destroyer and had the intention to paint in the black on the... solar panels? Anyway, I quite liked the look of the grey in that area and decided to keep it. I guess now its more like armor plating than whatever they were before. I've also settled on naming her the "Sentinel".

Here she is next to the Deception.

Admittedly, I'm still partial to little red corvettes (with apologies to Prince), but those blue ones are really nice. The first one definitely makes me think of the Tantive IV circa Episode III (save that that version of Tantive IV had a circular sensor dish, not the rectangular one we normally see on Corellian Corvettes.) :)

Nice job on all the ships. The Corellian Corvette just happens to be my favorite ship in all the SWU. :)

Thanks you guys!

Wow! That arrow makes the MC80 pop! I may steal that for one of my MC80 variants I just got from Mel!

Very nice work!

I am finally able to start painting again, starting with a trio of Mel's R1 Hammerhead Corvettes.

jLPdVR8.jpg

I just received these today, though they do require a bit of fixing up before painting (I went with black acrylate rather than fud for some reason, but the material is still rather good.)

Love your repaints. I cant wait to see your work on these little guys.

Well you won't have to wait for very long Mel. :P Thanks for your hard work on these too!

I was too excited to get to paint that I ended up staying awake for most of the night. Call me crazy if you want, but it was worth it. All 3 Hammerheads are mostly finished. I may want to go back in to fix up some things my tired eyes can't see right now.

Unfortunately my regular camera is vacationing at a relative's right now, so my not so decent, unflattering phone camera will have to do.

First up is the Lightmaker, famous for her selfless act of __________ __ ___ __ ___________ in Rogue One.

geHggEV.jpg

Next is the Valor. Based on the scheme of Transport P3 from Rebels, though not entirely a carbon copy.

RFlS49G.jpg

Finally is the Abolition, my favorite of the bunch. I wanted to stray away from the warmer colors we've been seeing on Hammerheads currently. It's a bit blotchy in some areas, this dark green was really hard to work with and it's still not perfect.

TC1iMhr.jpg

I'm sure there's also somebody out there who wants to know how big these things are. Here is one next to a CR-90. They're roughly the same size (the Hammerhead is a tiny bit shorter]. A word of caution as well, don't get these with black acrylate. The bottom sections on all 3 of mine had bumps almost resembling hives. It took about 1-2 hours of exactoing, sanding and washing to get a semi smooth surface. The results, however, almost feel like the FFG plastic, so it may be a tiny bit rewarding.

Love those Hammerheads!

Those are just wonderful. My favourite is the Lightmaker. Thanks for posting those.

Those look great!

What did you use to strip the FFG models if I may?

Thanks you guys.

I managed to finish up 3 squadrons, they look a lot better from an arms length away rather than in a close up with a camera. I'm still proud considering how small these things are.

IzgKpUs.jpg

I painted up 2 squadrons of Gold squadron Y-wings. If you're really observant you'll notice that some are painted like the movie models.

1Kdhu08.jpg

After seeing Rogue One, how could I not paint up some Blue Squadron X-wings. For however difficult it may have been to paint the Y-wings, X-wings are 10 times more difficult than that. The squad markings could definitely still use some work, but I don't think they're that bad for my shaky brush work.

I may go and fix up some stray and messy lines on these guys, but I still have another 4 squadrons to do, so little time to be able to do them.

Edited by MPG

The X-wings also suffer from worst mold lines, often with actual horizontal offset front to back. I decided to paint around them, not over them as you did, and just rolled with it (poorly as well).

Walk up behind Vykes and whisper "X-Wing Mold Lines..."

:D

Great work MPG, question though... What colour blue did you use for your blue squadron X-Wings?

Dig the splash of colour rebel approach, canon SDs though, to each their own.

Yeah, I really like the colors on the CR-90's. I never did anything to the one I got from the Core Set, but then I just got an additional two for X-Mas, bringing me up to three, so I thought I'd take some inspiration from you to make a squadron of three of them with a linked paintjob. Originally I wanted to make my own scheme of green, but then I figured what the heck, as I really like shading blue, let's go with an ode to Phoenix Squadron, even if I'll never get around to the similarly painted fighters.

So if you see some up around here that look familiar, you deserve a nod, lol.

I'm too chicken to try an arrowhead, though. I have a hard time getting paint to cover well over the FFG paint- it doesn't want to spread, but rather wants to bead up, so I have to lay down heavier layers than I am used to with my other wargaming figures, so I think it'll be hard to keep the lines tight.

Yup, was curious about the FFG model-friendly stripping agent. Wanting to restore the Empire to it's uniformed glory... with accent actually on panels instead of randomly all over.

The ISD looks really nice with its ghostly white paint job.

Or blow up a empty paper bag, walk up behind him and burst it.................I think he wold lose at least two of his nine lives :)
