Spread barrel and a stun carbine

By deathwolf669, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey guys, I am looking to make a Wookiee bounty hunter who is armed with all stun weapons and I was thinking as a stun setting is short range only but the carbine is a medium ranged weapon if I add a spread barrel will the range stay short ranged or would it then become engaged?

What do you guys think?

It depends on the wording of the spread barrel augment. If it says "reduces range by 1 band (or similar)" than, yes it would make it engaged (which would be bad with a ranged (heavy) weapon). However, it is says "Reduces range to short (or similar)" then no

I'd say it reduces the weapons range, which is medium to short. The stun setting is a separate feature and I'd just leave it at short otherwise if you use it and trigger Blast you'd be affecting yourself since you have to be engaged and that would be @#$%ing dumb imo.

This is from the EotE core rulebook:

"Base Modifiers: Grants Weapon Quality Blast (4), Reduces weapons range by one range band to a minimum of engaged."

So it appears that the spread barrel does, indeed, reduce the range band by one. Since the weapon you would be getting is a stun blaster, meaning it is made automatically with short range, and not a "separate feature", the barrel would reduce the range to engaged. Also, the book makes it clear that the range band can be engaged, so 2P51's interpretation is at odds with the book, even if it seems logical.

Perhaps this is the first time i have truly considered a house rule! I would consider keeping the range as Engaged, but there is no way your shooting yourself with that spread barrel, i would rule the user of that weapon is immune to the effects of triggering that Blast (although Allies not so much :P )

The LBR-9 Stun Rifle (Enter the Unknown, page 39) has the quality of "Stun Damage" while retaining its Long Range capabilities. Attaching the spread barrel would reduce its range to Medium and give the Blast 4 quality. "Stun Setting" reduces the range to short while "Stun Damage" does not. "Stun Damage" on a weapon forces the weapon to deal only stun damage strain. "Stun Setting" is given to a weapon that already deals traditional wound damage, I'm guessing that forcing the short range on the stun setting is a balancing thing. What the OP is asking is possible, so long as the weapon has the "Stun Damage" quality.

Spread Barrel can only be fitted to Blaster weapons so the LBR-9 is out since it uses darts.

Check again. The LBR-9 is a blaster weapon. The Field Model 77 Air Rifle is the tranq weapon. I direct your attention to the table on page 38. The LBR-9 is listed on the Energy Weapons portion.

whoops! good choice of weapon then.

Hmm shall have to look at that blaster then and see if the GM will allow me to use another book.

Personally, here's how I'd run it (which may or may not constitute a house rule).

Taking a blaster carbine, add the Spread Barrel attachment, which drops the weapon's default maximum range one category, going from Medium to Short. If the user opts to switch the modified carbine to the Stun setting, there's no further range decrease since the carbine's range is already Short.

Now, if using a blaster rifle (default max range of Long), adding the spread barrel would drop the range to Medium, and if switched to stun setting would drop it further to Short as per the rules on Stun setting weapon quality.

So in short, at my table the spread barrel attachment would only affect the weapon's maximum range, with Stun setting's own range reduction being handled separately.

Donovan that's what I was thinking but if you buy a stun weapon (for half the cost) that starts at short range.

But there has been a mention of a medium ranged blast stun weapon, shall update you when I find it. I have been given a few books to read :)
