Vassal tips and tricks (picture heavy)

By The Imperial Rebel, in X-Wing

I'm gonna start by saying that this post is mostly for a group of friends but I decided it might be the easiest to post it here. So that means it IS geared towards them.

This post intended to be read after one of the many Vassal Guides (some info will likely overlap).

Zoom

Something new Vassal players always talk about is not being able to judge distances that would seem easy on the board. Something you do is always plan dials and repostion on the same zoom. This helps your mind not get confused when it sees everything at different sizes. I'd Recommend 25% or 38%.

Scale

Another thing to help judging distances is having the templates out. This allows you the freedom you have in a normal game of looking at the template instead of visualizing it from memory (which is even harder on vassal). You can download the logfile at the same place you download the X-wing Module itself (I have the templates out in the following pictures).

Tabs Layout

Unless you have multiple monitors you will run into the issue of there being so many tabs you need on your little screen. This a sample setup that I use that can help you find what setup works for you. This allows space for your dials on your player tab, seeing all the dice rolls and of course the board itself. Note I have the round tracker there but that's only needed for the vassal league.

Bumping template shortcut

Most of the guides will cover this if there new enough but I wanted to put this here because some people already have played vassal and this was a added feature. When your ship bumps or may be going over a obstacle after performing it's move you can click the ship and hit C and it will spawn a collision aid out of the rear pegs of the last move done by the ship.

Comm Relay

Comm Relay has a very interesting interaction with Vassal. Since you normally just add tokens to the ship itself and push the reset actions button at the end of each round, you must place a evade token beside the Comm Relaying ship instead.

Playing sideways

On vassal people play sideways opposed to up and down basically exclusively. This always will seem weird for new vassal players because your first instinct is to play on the bottom. The picture below illustrates this if I make no sense.

Hotkeys

In Vassal there's a hotkey for almost everything, though that is awesome you'll just stress yourself out trying to remember them all. If you right click your ship you can find almost anything you need and it will tell you the hotkey for it. I'd recommend memorizing a few important ones (ship rotation and actions should priority 1) and then do the rest manually, adding a few shortcuts every once in a while.

Bumping

Everyone's favorite part of vassal, bumping. This will always be a annoyance but it will get easier in time, if you can't seem to get a bump right ask your opponent who i'm sure will help you out.
