What is the best choice for a limited rebel fighter force?

By mcworrell, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I have 74 points left in a fleet and I need some rebel fighters that will stall/hold their own against a substantial Imp fighter force.

My initial thoughts are a combination of A-Wings and YT-2400s. Is this the right call or is their a better option out there?

Jan plus xwings (if using squad commands), Jan and yy-2400 if you need rogue

What MandalorianMoose said. But to elaborate, it depends on your ship composition. Do you have a squadron command ship, and if so can you dedicate its command dials to squadron commands during turns 2-4?

If the answer is yes, then Xwings or Awings, or a mix, will do nicely. Jan might be useful, or with enough squadron commands you might just want more X's and A's.

If the answer is no, then yt-2400's are a great unit to use.

I like As personally. The speed allows you to get places that you need to go, and sometimes you can disguise where you're going at the setup entirely. The Xs are much more durable, especially with Jan. How effective they'll be depends upon how many squads you're up against and what kind of squadron composition they've brought.

As others have said, it very much depends.

Some valid options include:

6x A-wings (66)

Fast, flexible short-term speed bumps. Fantastic for delaying deployment or if your opponent didn't bring Intel. Vulnerable to ship-based AS.

3x X-wings+Jan (58)

Great multirole screen that can threaten ships in no-squadron lists and support in Precision Strike. Slow and individually expensive means they're not optimal deployment delays, and you really need them in the general area of the initial clash when it happens. Great of the other brought Intel and/or Interceptors. Balanced against both ship and squadron attacks.

4x YT-2400 (64)

The best option if your opponent is likely to have no squadrons and you have less need of deployments. Same speed as most imp squadrons means you're likely to at least match them for the alpha strike if you play it right. Best if you have initiative so you can shoot first in the squadron phase. Individually hefty squadrons means they're better against ships' AS, but more vulnerable to squadrons. Once they're engaged, that extra movement you paid for becomes moot.

Honestly a lot of it comes down to preference. Only way to tell which you like best is to just try them out! :)

All of the above is great advice.

However on a personal note if you have 74 points I would go with Jan and 4 Xwings (71 points)

If you have less than 70 points available I would go with 6 Awings (66 points) or 4 YT2400 (64 points) if you have minimal squadron activations as in MC30s and Corvettes.

Thanks guys. All really great ideas. Probably leaning the way of the x-wings and Jan, because I don't have enough of the other fighters. Combination of their escort and her braces should make them survive for a long time.

Awing, tycho, yt2400, yt2400 is my personal trademark defence force
