Did you just post this: https://www.reddit.com/r/XWingTMG/comments/4t7j17/delta_squadron_pilot_alt_art_card/ On Reddit? Because if so, I love it and it looks like the card's coming along nicely! :) And if not... someone's taking credit for your work!

hah yea that's me ;)

here we go:

I like the clean feel of this design wise, though the upgrade icons floating freely is a bit off putting.

Looks like some of the Aurubesh it backward, though? "RD-2H REAPER"?

I like the clean feel of this design wise, though the upgrade icons floating freely is a bit off putting.

I was going to say the same thing. Maybe extend an arm down from the techy bits above them to contain the upgrade icons?

I feel like that is the style of alt-art card FFG should have been doing from the start. Absolutely incredible work. Sign me up for a dozen and a poster.

:)

Yea, I'd like to make this kind of thing into prints very much, I asked FFG if I could print them, they said unfortunately not without a license, and for a license I'd have to get it from Disney as it's the Star Wars IP.

I sent Disney an email about a month ago but have yet to hear back.

not a bad idea at all :)

Howdy folks, apologies for the gap in posting. I've been doing some work on the side which will see the light of day eventually but just needs to be polished first. This has taken priority and will do for the next two weeks until it's finished, but after completion I'll ask the requester if I can post it all up here and if so it'll be a nice picture dump. :)

In the meantime, I had a few spare minutes today doodling around with the squadron logo patch I would like to use for my ships at some point. I think when playing I'd happily put all of my ships in the 481st experimental starfighter testing squadron, since I fly mostly phantoms and defenders and they'll have paintjobs to match:)

There are a slew of errors on this and I've pretty much just hacked off bits and pieces of one of the Star Wars schematics and grafted bits together. It needs a bit of cleaning up but , well, gives the idea :)

Hi guys,

I put in a request for licensing to FFG, as mentioned above to see if I could get these cards printed. Their legal department forwarded me to Lucasfilm, and I just heard back from them after a lengthy period of inquiry. There is good news and bad news. The good news is that I was given some great directions to follow up on with regards to further artwork.

The bad news is that I was explicitly forbidden from commercializing these paintings as printed cards, without a license, and they said they cannot offer me a license. I was clear that I was very happy to not profit from it, and just cover printing and mailing costs, but it seems like unless I'm able to speak with FFG about asking them kindly if they might be able to print them under their umbrella, I'll not be able to further distribute them than what I'm doing now.

This is not a criticism of Lucasfilm or FFG, they have both been extremely fair and courteous in our emails! I think I'm okay to just keep making stuff as a fan, as far as I'm aware, just not able to cross over that line. which is fair enough :) .

so as not to make this post too sad, and more crucially, to stay on topic, here's an old WIP sketch that I'll sort out eventually.

starting to come together! lots of detailing left to do yet,

still have to go back and finish up the dunes on the right, and pick out the highlights in the machinery. 28315472946_5eb6665b93_c.jpg

Gotta Go Fast!

TIE/x7 alt art?

You should totally send your work in to FFG by the way I'm sure they're always looking for card artists and this is the beans.

Phenomenal!...

...speechless.

Hoping FFG asks you to freelance on a few future cards, if not some better arrangement altogether.

woo, two things on the go at once today, I'll show you the second here. bonus points for guessing the ship on the inside of the perspective box ;)

TIE Phantom

Khiraxz with an scum cloaking device mod :)

Alabaster Space Whale would look great contrasted against that backdrop.

A Borg cube!...

... or a 1980's Volvo.

Haha yea it's a phantom (Echo)

I found this one particularly tricky to get the proportions on, what I ended up doing was tracing the basic shapes of a couple photos of phantoms to get a feel for the dimensions and major features of the ship. Then, I took the cockpit of the one closest to the angle I wanted, and sketched out the widths of the windows with it as a reference, as this seems to be the major defining feature of the ship, that when inaccurate makes the whole thing look pretty derpy.

From there, I could build the ship into my perspective box and away we go!

great work!

keep sharing :)

You are amazing.

Just needed to say that.

Carry on your work

so I knew phantoms are experimental ships, I knew they'd have ridiculous amount of greeblage, but of boy, I'm going to have to take a second pass as this. I'm happy with the shape, but going from my little phantom model there are TONS of pipes and dials and bits I've ignored. I'll need to go back and figure them all out. FFG models are awesome and detailed! 28407838663_87eeeb54d9_b.jpg

hrm. still fiddling with the nose, something about the perspective isn't quite right. awesome but-weird canopy. Greebles everywhere!

28996980256_d78b4bf7bc_z.jpg

last pass, this time I'll flesh out all the flat surfaces of all the greebles. I'm pulling ideas for details off a Douglas Invader schematic you can see the wheels of, (when I haven't got the foggiest what a particular greeble on my phantom is supposed to look like sharp).

and the gun and cockpit. I think I've fixed the canopy, the perspective was a bit off, the grey underlay doesn't match up with my idealized geometry, so I'll redraw it according to the new cone and go from there.

whew! lineart done as far as I need to for this point. On to painting next.

I'm going to find errors looking at it fresh tomorrow, but they should be fairly easy to fix with the whole thing actualized now. 28949225542_2914cb4667_c.jpg

mid-tone colour blocking:

so the whole phantom will be in white, with three different colour casts, from below, above and to the right. I'm a sucker for punishment.
here's one of the engine cowlings, I've got a lot of work still to be done on this but should give the idea of what I'm doing.
