Intensify Forward Firepower Episode XXII: Pickle Salad

By WWPDSteven, in Star Wars: Armada

I request that you fly it against a Rhymerball if at all possible. I want to see how your methods differ in handeling that match up

That will be a match to watch!

For me it is a favorite match up. It is not easy, and you have to go in expecting the loss of 1-3 ships but if you choose an objective that helps you regain lost points (Precision Strike or Advanced Gunnery) you can definitely streak by with 3 ships down and a 9-1.

It is an exhilarating match up that requires lots of risk and rewards.

On a side note. I am taking offense, Dodonna the Oppressor requires first and so bids aggressively!

You guys should come to Portland Oregon some times. We have 2 stores with alcohol is served while you play. It is nice.

EASY! It's Command Casual!

MN might be my new western travel frontier. All the way to Oregon would require vacation plans. Worthington's front door can be made in less than a shift of work time if you fly so that's doable for a Saturday tournament.

Alas, it is the issue with living on the west coast. We have some of the best stuff but we are far from all the major events.

Don't feel bad. Even living in the same state can mean getting to a regional here is imposing without taking vacation.

Long Island did seem like kind of a weird choice. And Sunday was even weirder. I was surprised they didn't have any upstate. NY is certainly big enough to support two regionals.

California gets two Regionals, but the drive for me to reach the second one from my house in SoCal is the same as for someone living in Washington, where there are already two Regionals, to reach the Northern California one in Sacramento.

If I lived on the East Coast, it would take me the same time to drive from the New York Regionals to the Indianapolis Regionals as it would for me to drive SoCal to NorCal.

So even though there is a lot on the West Coast we are so much more spread out that East Coast will actually have more tournaments per square mile at the higher levels than out here. Although Store level competition seems much more prevalent out here than what I experienced on the East coast (lived for a while in Thornwood NY and maybe it was just me but finding a FLGS was always an issue). I have probably 10 FLGS within 30 min drive time of my house that run armada leagues, tournaments, and game nights. Enough that I could play Armada in a store every night of the week if I was so inclined. But missing out on regionals because it's a 8-10 hour drive to the next nearest location if you miss your local one is a drag.

The West Coast is awesome but too spread out.

CA native, AZ raised: I feel your pain. :(

But don't despair: Elon Musk will save us all!

You still in the general Mojave area? Or have you moved to greener pastures?

Everywhere is greener than the Mojave.

Now I live where the Air Force tells me to live; I'll be back to the west coast soon, though. :)

I think the biggest problem is that so many events are on a Saturday. Do you have no travel time without skipping work.

For me, if it is going to be any day, I want Saturday. Travel Friday after work. Stay at some motel nearby. Saturday tourney. Either leave that night (within 4 hours) or stay and have drinks with my fellow tourney goers afterwards. Home Sunday.

I need that day after though, drinks or not, to recover though. No to Sunday.

I work evenings to past midnight. If it isn't immediately local I can't attend on Saturday. And I work weekends too, so realistically I have to ask for two days off to do one day.

The problem we had with Lion Rampant is they mandated Saturdays for Canada.

There was no negotiation on Sunday preferences..... It wasn't up to the Stores, it was up to the Distributor.

That, I think is a disservice to the community.

Ah. Sorry man. Again in my own little selfish world.

But, @Dras here, is Saturday not the best day overall? Maybe it's really not I dunno but I'm considering hitting Montreal or Toronto and that wouldnt be possible on other days. I dunno maybe a mix is best - but you hold that on a Wednesday and it's not going to be well attended, I'd bet.

The argument is just as valid when you translate it to "One Day or Two".

Remove the Choice, and well, that's what hurts.

My Wife works 6 days a week, Saturdays included. That means when you guys are playing on Saturdays, I'll be at home babysitting my Toddler.

In Calgary, there are two main stores that run events for Armada... Myth Games does theirs on Saturdays... Sentry Box does theirs on Sundays. I deliberately made it Sundays so it would not compete with that - to allow people to have the choice of attending events on Saturdays or Sundays.

The Take away from that is that the Sunday Events - here - Get 2-3x the support straight up. To the point that I was told Myth did not even apply for Regionals to be held.

So the Sentry Box - with me assisting.- got in and secured. ANd were told that only Saturdays were available, and that only certain dates were available "as to not conflict with US or other regional dates..."

So we promptly accepted the date we were given, and were told that there was no way it could be held even on the sunday - the next day - despite the fact that, our Saturday Armada Regional is conflicting with a nearby Saturday Imperial Assault Event....

.. If we were on the Sunday, that wouldn't be happening.

.. and I'd be able to attend, despite being "the Armada guy" who runs things. I'll most probably be missing out... So yes, I am a little biased in that regards, too... But I feel that a Store who holds the events should be able to have some say in when they hold their events - they know when their constituents play, after all...

... with total respect and sadness for my gamer friends who work every Saturday.

... now I'm all angry and ranty :/

My apologies, people.

I guess my idea is that a regional event is set up for regional accessibility and not to reward the locals. For me, EVERY official Armada event requires more travel than most players would undertake, so I've never really subscribed to the territorial vibe some seem to carry. That said I'm fortunately able to travel the distances required to play. Believe me, I'd always prefer maximum players at any event I attend, so I hear what you're saying. I'd be willing to bet that there's a good chunk of players out there (maybe outside your area) who love that the events are held on different days since they travel to many.

My apologies, people.

Alberta has 2 Regionals.

They're separated by a Month, but they're both on Saturdays.

The Vancouver Regional - Saturday.

Saskatchewan - Saturday.

Its great for the person who can travel and who can be off on Saturdays.

But it pays respect to no other people.

I mean, as you say - its more for the region, rather than Reward the Locals?

What if you're the Region who has no other people nearby - like Western Canada.

With the specific exception of the possibility of MikeMcMann... I doubt I'll see a single American at the "Last Regional in the World" here in Hothgary come the 30th of July...

Can someone point me to the thread discussing the timing and use of the Veteran Gunners as mentioned in the episode? I can't seem to find it.

I'll be hitting the Toronto one. Drag Dano with you again. It luckily coincides with my cross country move.
