Adding some flavour

By AceSolo5, in Game Masters

Hello all...

I'm thinking that I'd like to add some flavour to my gaming sessions. I'm fine with describing the scene of where my players are, u know sights & sounds but I want to add a little bit more detail! I was thinking of types of food & drinks (which I always struggle with coming up with names for on the fly) amongst other things.

So I was wondering if anybody had examples of the things that they use to give their sessions that Star Wars feel or just general advice on adding those extra touches of detail?

Cheers :)

Tho honestly, use the players imaginations to flesh out the details. "He seems to be eating a meat pie with some green and purple bits in a Orange sauce that is dribbling down his chin" don't even need to give the dish a name

another is fleshing out NPCs. I give them a voice, and some mannerisms or quirks... like teeth sucking, table tapping... which allows players to connect to the character beyond a name and description. I knew I hit a Jackpot when they tried to contact someone and all I had to do was use the NPCs voice and they knew who it was.

Just make sure you use only the freshest Jawas for your Jawa juice

Corellian whisky. It frees up imaginations....

Tatooine Sunburn, Corellian brandy, synthale, Numb tea (a black tea with ryll added), blue milk (ofc), Jawa juice (just don't ask what's in it), Water of Life.

On drink I recall from the Stainless Steel Rat series (Read some of those books for EotE module ideas!) is 'Syran Panther Sweat'. Described as a drink 'So potent, its sale is forbidden on most civilized worlds'. Other than that, get some foods for the session, but don't tell the players what it is...don't leave anything in packaging, no labels, no nothing. Grab some Ramune, take the label off, and set them on the table...give the players instructions on how to open them, but don't tell them what the flavors are, let them find out. Crack open a can of spicy applesauce, stir in some raisins and some food coloring to make it juuuust look interesting, and serve. Get some jerky of various flavors, toss it all into one big bowl for Jawa Jerky. "You never know what you'll find!". Can you find any of those grape red vines...the ones that aren't red so much as they are bluish-purplish in color? Ideally, your players should know 'Oh, thats [insert food here]', but at the same time be telling the other players 'Ummm....how about you try it first?'.

Just keep any food allergies in mind before serving your snacks of dubious nature to your players.

Look for Galaxy Guide 9 Fragments of the Rim. It has a lot of fluff in there about food and beverage.

Yes, once again WEG, rears its ugly head!!! :)

Pan Galactic Gargle-Blasters?

Many thanks for the great responses, definitely gives me loads to work with! I love the wiki page on booze & LugWrench, that's a real blast from the past...I used to love The Stainless Steel Rat books :)

Speaking of WEG, I just picked up a cheap copy of The Death Star Technical Plans... Whilst my players will be going nowhere near the Death Star, it's a great resource for maps for Imperial installations!

Back in the day that IS why people bought that

The WEG imperial sourcebook was another goldmine of information that I lot of players had. With a little searching you can find all the old WEG SW books in PDF format online

Reading the Han Solo Adventures trilogy... there's some good descriptions of various locations. Clubs, casinos, hotels, weather. There's even a few species I need to doublecheck on WookiP.

LOL food allergies... yes, many a 'Party Weekend' has started with a trip to A&E coz of my friend's nut allergy:

'My ears are itchy' (takes another bite)... my throat's a bit itchy (swallows)... 5 mins later his eyes were streaming and red as tomatoes...Hello A&E!!!

Sounds like a good hook for an episode. So, what is it that Lando (or Han) is allergic to? And would one of them be so sneaky as to use that against the other as a seemingly innocent part of a game of chance?

Oh, look — the Sabacc tournament is being held at a place where they serve gleek nuts. Too bad XYZ is allergic to gleek nuts.
