Custom Vessery Card

By Autosketch, in X-Wing

I love this card art work. My only nitpick it that there is no Empire symbol anywhere to show faction. * just saw it in blue on the screen. Maybe put the Faction symbol top left corner

You sir, have your own Kickstarter right there.

1st stretch goal - Empire Aces W1 to W8

2nd stretch goal - Rebel Aces W1 to W8

3rd stretch goal - Scum Aces W1 to W8

4th stretch goal - Empire ships all PS levels. Extra generics

5th Stretch goal - Rebel ships all PS levels. Extra generics

6th stretch goal - Scum ships all PS levels. Extra generics.

Once you get the basic template for one ship class, you just swap out the needed changes as PS increases. Art work will be online to pick but you may get lucky and have good enough artwork as the Defender pic you have.

Then it is determining the print run size and base cost.

*edit, just saw Empire symbol hidden in blue computer screen.

Haha, well, maybe, but for now at least I'm most interested in painting up new cards.

I think once I've done a few of those then maybe we'll have a look at something, I'm conscious that while using FFG artwork I don't think there is any scope for it.

But yes, I'd love to do the uniques from the empire. To test out the transferability I grabbed a random bit of FFG art, which happened to be Winged Gundark.

I'm not entirely sure which I prefer, the slanted HUD, or the flat HUD. I'm not sure it really matters too much, but it sure is tough to pick. I'd like to have a go at repainting one of the ships for the centre art, so it should be easier to make sure the art fits around (and through) the HUD.

Slanted.

I'd recommend, if the attack icon is meant to indicate firing arc, putting the arrow from the top half of the Firespray's aux arc icon there. It's not on the default cards because the symbol initially just indicated attack value, but if you're using it to denote arc I'd make a forward arc only symbol.

ooh, good idea!

I'll update it on the next test card.

Absolutely gorgeous. Take my money?

If i'd recommend anything, theres... Quite a bit of red on those cards. It looks more like Rebel livery on those "cockpit displays" than Imperial.

The card is still, however, absolutely stunning.

I wonder, do you actually need the ability text?

Yea, I worried about it too, but it can't be avoided, all the screens, lighting, and dials in a TIE fighter cockpit are deep reds and blues.

technically no, and I could make it much more like a cockpit without accommodating it, but in the end I was looking to make something that neatly slides over my old cards, and for generality I need some way of displaying text for cards I just don't know as well.

Any new stuff?

Well, any plans for any Rebel pilots...? I mean, these Imperials ones have been amazing, just... They're fascist scum. Any hope for some brave freedom fighters in the near future?

looking lovely!

Haha, slavedriver! ;)

for cards no, with the spare time I've got I've been working on my next defender card. Shouldn't take more than the weekend to finish then I'll be back to making more cards I think.

I'll keep progress of this, and new cards as well within the one thread:

Haha, yes, I've been plotting out a rebel card for the last few days. I haven't figured out what elements I'm going to use where, but I'll start this next week.

looking lovely!

Thanks!

If you have any plans to print these do let me know, or have an correct card sized image that I could print...

Wow fabulously good work mate, I love everything about this alt artwork, only thing I can criticise is that I don't own it lol

I gotta be honest, I made these to satisfy a nagging hobby itch I had about my TIE phantom and Defender cards. I didn't expect such a large number of people looking for copies of these cards! I had made no plans to print these in bulk, but this isn't something I'm averse to in principle, but mostly because I don't want to overstep the boundaries of fair use.

In this format at least currently what I'm doing (I believe) falls under the remit of fair use. I wouldn't feel comfortable selling prints of these cards as they currently incorporate FFG/Disney copyright work (namely the centre art).

Wholly original work as far as I understand is however fair use, so as long as a card contains neither copyrighted Disney artwork nor any clearly direct derivatives in competition with Disney copyrghted work, it is also admissible (I think?). I'd be particularly happy to hear from someone with more information on this on what is and isn't exactly allowable, as it has been difficult to get a clear answer on the net.

But yes, it may simply be that I have to come up with my own art for each subsequent card, and if this is the kind of thing I'm not going to get an angry letter from FFG over then I'd be very happy to do a big run of a whole bunch of these types of alt art cards.

Brilliant work!

Did you consider making more cards for pilots with less than impressive graphics?

I am especially interestd in your take on Turr Phennir - right now it looks, well, very boring.

That looks like a good interceptor candidate for an AA card.

I am not a lawyer, but I am married to one. I am assuming that you are based in the US.

There are no fixed rules that you can apply to determine if a use of copyrighted material qualifies for fair use protection. At the end of the day (trial, really), the judge decides. Since Disney has better lawyers than you do, assume that if it gets to that point, you are going to lose.

You'd almost certainly get a cease and desist letter first, though, so as long you promptly comply and aren't fronting your own money to pay start up costs for a production run, and aren't being flagrant about it, you are unlikely to end up paying out of pocket.

The ship icons etc. are going to be copyrighted, but I could see those getting a pass. Using someone else's art almost certainly wouldn't. You'd probably want to redo the blueprints too, unless they are already under a permissive license.

At that point, I could imagine a kickstarter not getting taken down, but who knows.

Great work! I'd back it. :-)
