Harker's SCUM Re-Paints & Conversions

By Barry Harker, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Plastic weld is an ultra thin layer of glue.

It almost evaporates as you apply it.

It...welds the two surfaces together.

Slightly melting the plastic applied surfaces.

A bit like cement.

But it drys transparent and uses capillary action to run into the gap.

Brilliant glue.

Will do most plastics that are in the ABS range and styrene's.

Have fun .

Oh one more thing.....don't what ever you do....get your nose anywhere near the open bottle.

It has a sweet scent.... But will blow the back off your head off if you take...a whiff !

Its potent stuff !

Just a heads up.

All the best

Barry.

Always the way, lol...some of the most effective photographic chemicals can be deadly, so I've got used to ensuring well-ventilated areas for all my hobbies over the years, but thanks for the heads-up - forewarned is forearmed ;)

A little more work on my Custom Firespray.

added some more panel's........getting tedious now, but still loads to do !

looking forward to finally getting round to painting it.

I have had it sat on my desk for so long.

I decided to give it a thin coat of Primer, to see how it is looking so far.

its only when you get a single coat of colour on a model, that you then really see how and if its all working.

here it is so far........

Still lots to do. but its getting there.

:D

Even unpainted, I feel this is a work of art. I can only guess planning phase along with the long hours of detail work you put into this project. Bravo! I'm tempted to ask how much a comission like this would be, but I'm afraid that the quality of work you do will be super expensive. Anyways, WOW! Awesome job

Thank you Jaffa.

But yes ....its the time it takes...and the lack of time I have working on my models.

However.

I might make a silicone mold of this one.

Then cast it in Resin.

Although I won't be able to sell them.

I may just do them for the cost price of the resin...very little, and postage.

Make sure there is no profit....to annoy ffg and the mouse !

It would just be a pleasure to make an extra few.

And see how others paint them.

So that's a possibility in the future.

All the best.

Barry.

I'll certainly pay for the cost of resin and postage!

The more warning labels something have, the better it is! :D

Hi Barry - just wanted to say thanks for the tip re Plastic Weld...great stuff, sets almost instantly, but with just a little 'wiggle' room, and excellent for small details via brush-on where otherwise its all to easy to nudge out of place before regular cement has taken...

Cheers

Hi Ian,

Glad to be of Help.

Sorry I took so long to reply.... Work has been crazy !

Getting on with my Xwing re-builds and re-paints this week.

So I should have new pics up by the weekend.

All the best

Barry.

MANDALORIAN COMMANDO SQUADRON

Wave 9 has been out a few weeks, and already there are lots of great repaints you guys have done.

So, I thought I would jump on the band wagon and join in the fun !

I have been building a Converted Y wing into a Protectorate Fighter/Bomber to Join my P-Fighters and Khiraxz.

The Lancer is my fave looking ship of wave 9, love the cockpit design.

As soon I had seen the ship in Rebels I wanted to do one thing to it.......add some wings to the outer engine nacelles.

I wanted to make it look something similar to the Fantastic German Luftwaffe "Flying Wing" designs in the later period

of the second world war.

these days referred to as " Luftwaffe 46 " like the Horten 229....

kTDj9D.jpg

Or, what most people will know.....The Raiders Flying Wing :D

PIizVi.jpg

ppErJP.jpg

So once I had decided what the shape would look like, I made some card mockups of the wings resembling the Raiders wing set up.

but then I remembered I had some great looking shapes in the form of the Jedi Starfighter Kit.

with a bit of re-shaping, they would work well for what I wanted to do......

with the raised wings either side of the engine nacelles, I needed to raise the 360 arc cannons to shoot over the wings " although a bad shot would shoot of the rear stabilizer wings !"

I decided to kit-bash some bigger weapons, along with some Thrust Vectoring engine nozzels....

cqTLqw.jpg

However, the Guns are to big for the model, so I knocked together a smaller set....

In the midst of Customizing the Lancer, I'm getting on with the other models in the Squad.

my custom Ywing P-fighter/Bomber....

Using blue/white Tack to mask the Grey and Green Camouflage pattern i want for my Mando Commandos.....

Barry, Barry, Barry... You are amazing.

Don't ever stop coming to us with these awesome mods and repaints.

Thrust Vector nozzles in place and over sized top mounted cannons.

now the model is finished and primed ready for paint....

gDO7K6.jpg

The Lancer with a small model of a Luftwaffe 46 Flying wing I made for the War At Sea game.

its the model that inspired the look of my lancer, which in turn is based on the Raiders Flying Wing....

Thank you Majeure :D .

I like looking at everyone else's work as much as i like displaying my stuff, we all inspire each other.

there are a lot of you guys on here that have inspired me, so i'm just sharing the work.

take care and all the best,

Barry.

Painting the Camouflage on the Lancer now. and using green Frog Tape cut with a scalpel to get the wavy pattern.

Frog tape is fantastic stuff, it seals to the surface, but wont lift the paint underneath. its is also water and heat resistant....to point

unlike ordinary masking tape. I have been using this tape for years painting everything from

Cars, Bikes, Boats "real ones not models :D " even the Armour I make for my normal Job.

this Tape is great.....

yTEsDv.jpg

Here is the Pattern uncovered and now awaiting the next paint stage.....

WAafK6.jpg

1Ow57q.jpg

All of the models except the Protectorate Fighters, Due to there Swing wing design, have pale grey underbelly's.

Grey/Green Camouflage when looking down at the craft, Pale Grey when looking up at the sky......

AAcHBb.jpg

The Idea being that they would use there Camo as part of there infiltration technique, and the colour would match any forestation planet, including there Homeworld.

As I continue through the weekend, I will be painting and finishing off the models.

Detailing, panel work, highlighting and shading, weathering.

And ill post more photos soon.

All the best,

Barry.

Edited by Barry Harker

Why would you make the Shadow Caster wider aaaaaaaah.

On another note, I think I might just have answered what colour scheme to do on the Punishing One I've been uninspired on for a while now. Thanks!

Ha Ha, Yes......it is now very wide, But.

All of my Large base ships sit on Modified custom stands.

same base, just a longer stem.

so now the Larger models sit high up on there new stands, swooping over the battlefield and higher than anything else on the table.

and there fore, not colliding with any other models !

:P

All the best,

Barry.

All I can say on the MandCom mod for the Pursuit Craft is WOW!!!

Phenomenal work, Barry! I wish I had the eye for mods and the skill with plastic and glue as you

:D

Looking good Barry. Being a long time historical gamer, I always prefer things in camouflage.

Spike, why not dive in and have a go.

Kit bashing, moderate to heavy scratch building is a lot of fun.

Start of small, little bits, then as your confidence grows. You will do more and get better with it.

But most importantly.....Have fun.

Hey Parravon

Most ships in the Star wars Universe veer away from military style camouflage.

But,

The camo should work well for a scum function group of Mandalorians.

Thanks

I like that you've chosen what is quite close to an older Royal Air Force type camouflage, which oddly is exactly the same colour scheme I did my Epic 40K Imperial Guard in.

I thought about doing some of my Scum in camouflage, and I decided that in space the best camouflage would be plain black, but that's just too boring. Instead, I've gone with US Navy aircraft colours from World War II, but not in a pattern. I'll post some pics when they're finished.

Yeah it does look very similar to what the RAF often used during the Cold War. Anyway, good stuff as always Barry.

Yes you are both right about the Camouflage.

I did copy one of my Favorite aircraft types, The Vulcan Bomber.....

Fantastic Aircraft and an Awe inspiring sight watching it Roar over head !

However,

The first Idea for the Camo came from The Scum & Villainy Y wing......

That's where I got the idea from with the Camouflage for my Mando Commandos

Thanks guys,

Carrying on with the painting of my Mandalorian Commandos.

Applying Squad recognition markings for the flight wing and Flight Leader.

Yellow for Flight Leader.

Red for 1st Squadron.

First stage of Ink base has been applied, now have to tidy them up, Highlight and detail the models........

Why the Yellow Markings ?

Well, part of the influence of this model is Luftwaffe Fighters.

Yellow markings were applied during the Battle of Britain campaign so as the Pilots could quickly recognise who

was friend or foe.

R.A.F pilots would later refer to them as the " Yellow Peril " or Yellow nosed B******* :o

" Beware of the Hun in the Sun "

So that is why I wanted the yellow over the Camo paint work, I love the look of Luftwaffe paint schemes.

And thought it would fit my group of Mandalorians.

YQPBZS.jpg

uLV2mp.jpg

The model is now drying after a heavy coating of Citidal ink.

will start weathering and detailing tomorrow.

All the best,

Barry.

Do you use an airbrush for all this? I assume so.

I think I want to invest in an airbrush. And an extraction booth.

This certainly seems different from your usual paintstyle that we know from your crazy scum builds. Thats some versatility!
