That is a significant amount of Modification!
One almost wonders if it was worth keeping the firespray base model in there... 20 minutes more work and you'd have knocked up a new fuselage anyway!

Ha Ha yes, you are probably right !
I have what I want it to look like in my head.
and i'm using the the main body as a.....template which will eventually have a completely new outer skin !
but i needed the firespray model to build onto.
and, I needed to purchase the box set anyway for the cards.
thanks and all the best,
Barry.
Thanks Merry.
All the best,
Barry.

And your point is ?
Amazing vision...especially love what you've done with the cockpit, as it always seemed ridiculously large compared to all the other ships and not at all suitable for a combat-oriented vessel...
...can't wait to see what you decide on for a paint scheme to go with its new outline!
Hello Ian.
Yes, one of the things that bugged me about the firespray
Was the large cockpit canopy.
It makes it look out of scale.
And your right.
Having such a large screen in a fight....not a good idea.
Although field of view is great.
Not so good for protecting against blasters.
Colour is going to take me a while to decide....I have been thinking of a dark chrome!
But that might be to much.
May be paint it like my Scum YT
Different panel shades of brown and tan colours.
Still undecided.
Thanks.
All the best.

Have you seen these
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/3qJDJ
designs by Robert Fink - I think some of the Firespray ones look stunning [the gold 'scales' one in particular], and there are a couple that kinda echo your dark-chrome idea...although they're maybe not easy to transfer to a model
Maybe something "phoenix"-like...
Cheers

Just thought the unintentional rhyme was funny.
Beautiful design and execution! I can see a dark chrome paint scheme with filters tinting some panels and a grungy exhaust area.
Once again I bow before your talent!
You're certifiable Mr Harker! In a good way though.
The engine intakes look like modified parts from something else. Do you remember their original kit?

Hello IronOx.
Yes, they are from a 1:48 Me109F.
They are the under wing cannon pods.
Something added to the Me109's for the ground attack role.
They are supposed to have cannon barrels attached to the front.
But what I did was to open up the hole at the front of the pod.
To turn into an air Intake.
All the best.

Cheers Guys.
I have some variations of chrome paint, that im going to do a test with.
see what different colours under the chrome will do effect wise.
I have used chrome paint in my job on costumes, so im pretty experienced with it.
hi gloss will give a higher chrome shine, and a different colour as a base changes the hue of the chrome.
ill see what looks good.

Some of the colors from Model Master and Alclad are the "buffing" type. If you use those you can change the tone by not only buffing but by changing the direction you polish.
CUSTOM YV666
I have put the Firespray to one side to get on with my Custom YV for a game on July13th....in two weeks.
and as its one of my models and I dont like the Look of the Standard YV.
I have taken my Razor Saw to the model for some heavy conversion work.
and removed the Awful Gothic Cathedral style cockpit windows.
the model will have a scratch built Cockpit with a Hanger at the top in the " Hump "
and the Engines moved to the outside on the rear wings.
Lots of extra panel detail, new engine layout, cockpit, weapon pods and Hanger in the top section.

This it So far at the end of this weekend.
I needs some fine sanding in areas, bit more work on the cockpit and then on to Paint.
Once the fine Sanding is done to tidy it up.
bit extra on the cockpit canopy and then on to paint.
should have it finished next weekend.
so Ill post more photos soon.
All the best,
Barry
Barely recognisable, but very Star Wars. Excellent work.
Hi Barry
On models like the Slave, when you add the larger plasticard body panels to curved surfaces, eg the cockpit and wing mount areas, do you use a paper template to get the shape, or are you that experienced that you can just judge it by eye ?
Cheers

Yes it is easy to go to far and make it look like something that would not fit in the Star Wars universe.
Just deciding on colour at the moment.
Should have it finished soon.

The main shape for the wings where shaped using card first.
To make sure it would work.
But then everything from then on.
All of the plastic detail is done by eye.
I make both half's of each panel at the same time.
So either side will match.
But yes,
All done by eye.
I know what I want it to look like in my head.....I just have to make it.
Thanks and all the best.
Barry.

I always knew I made the wrong career choice! That is amazing, but I guess one of the benefits of experience
I've never been able to "see" in 3D in that way - heck, the Imperial Epic ship I'm building is all triangles & straight lines and I still managed to get the halves slightly mismatched, compound curves would be a non-starter!
Your mods and finishing tips are truly inspiring, thanks for posting such detailed info
Cheers

Finished the Cockpit Detail on the Custom YV.
I have gone for a more Armoured Canopy type with an upper carapace and and wide window frames.
It was going to be more open wide Glass effect.
But I figured if your going to shoot at vessel.....Shoot the Pilot !
Still has good lower visibility but looking upwards is more restricted with a Carapace above the cockpit.
good use of Plastistruct styrene strips and Plastic Weld from E.M.A.......
The Side firing arc has now been sorted with some 1:350 scale battleship cannons and added strip Styrene to turn them
into a top mounted 360' laser cannon's.
I now have the rest of the weekend to enjoy painting the Custom YV.
this is it so far Sprayed in a Mat Khaki Beige for its Base colour.
now painting in the Panels and Orange Graphics.
the main colour will be Beige and Orange.........
Once the Painting is Complete.
I will take the finished photos.
Now off to sit behind my desk and go through all of the Star Wars soundtracks while I finish
Painting it.
All the best,
Barry.
Edited by Barry HarkerBlocking in the Colour now.
Starting with Masking for the Orange stripes......
And blocking in the Panels with alternate shades of Beige and brown ready for the Layers of Inking and shading.
and final weathering........
Next.
Im onto inking and giving the model some depth before shading.
All the best,
Barry.
Edited by Barry HarkerNow added washes of grime and dirt for the panel depth.
at this stage it looks a scruffy mess !
but now the fun begins with dry brushing and highlighting the panels.
finer streaks dirt and blaster burns.......
