Starting to look more like a Turtle !

But I like how it looks, now adding the rear detail section and armoured carapace that will house sensors underneath

and meet up with the hull of the jumpmaster body work.

Now starting to add lots of detail to the surface area with small sections of cut styrene strip.

easy with a scalpel and EMA plastic weld, drop a spot of the plastic weld glue, then add the part to the surface.

blow on the part to evaporate any residue glue and ensure a clean finish around the small section.

I pick each piece up with the tip of the Scalpel blade, then push it into place........

Main engine nacelles need detail and panel work finishing.

Then I will see how it all looks in grey primer.

All the best,

Now I really like what the JumpMaster can do on the Gaming table....... But really dislike the way it looks !

so cutting one of these Ugly buggers up will be a pleasure !

Precisely my sentiment also, so I shall live vicariously through you and savour the mutilation...

...but savouring even more what you have achieved after that!

You are truly a HobbyMaster 5000.

Maaaaan this puts my work to shame on the Ghtroc I'm building.

And gives me a much better idea than previously for how to work out the compound curved parts...

Take note Ladies & Gentlemen, we are in the presence of a Master. Barry is spinning hay into gold in front of our eyes.

Barry, I HATE YOU! Lol

You've gone and done it. Again!

Just to let you know, I've trashed my finger paints and Play-Doh. I QUIT!

Ha Ha Thanks chaps !

By posting pics how I put the models together....it might give others an idea or two.

" im working on the Engine nacelles at the moment, should have the model in primer soon "

Like I myself have had many ideas from other great Painters and Builders on the Paint Sub Forum :D

Lets all keep inspiring each other.....and keep it all positive for each other !

All the best,

Barry.

This is magnificent, I want one!!

Hi Barry

I'm on the scrounge for more valuable info again!

Not sure if it applies to your current WIP, as a lot of the detail so far is raised rather than lowered, but may still have a place - wondering what your years of experience have suggested as the best cramps and vices to use for holding large volume pieces whilst gluing[welding] or whilst scribing panel lines in larger pieces ?

I can imagine that you can get by with a firm hand on the piece resting on your workbench, or g-cramped to it for smaller stuff, but how do you get on with anything maybe 6"/150mm or greater ?

I'm just starting scribing engine exhaust vent louvres in a larger model, and it's just not working "by hand"! :(

Cheers, Ian ;)

EDIT: Oh, was wondering if you could put a link to your "Pencils" and "Glues" threads in your signature? I've pointed others to them recently, but with 10 pages in this forum now, they're getting harder to find...they could be 'pinned', I guess, but I think we'd end up with the front page ALL pins with yours, Macross & so many others helpful stuff !

Hello Ian.

Well firstly.......Here are the Links too the Weathering Page and Plastic & Glue page.......

WEATHERING with Pencils.

PLASTIC & GLUE How to use and where to get it.

With regards to Panel Scribing It isn't as easy as it looks, although I have personally found an easier way to do it.

and its how I do all of my models when scribing.

For me the easy way, but a little long winded is to draw a fine line with a sharp pencil first,

Now if your scribing over a curve or a cylinder. you can use masking tape or

An Artists fine liner Template. Originally made for Car Designers. can still be bought in most Art Shops and stores.

Its made of a very thin spring stainless steel.

you can curve into tight shapes against a curved surface and then Draw on the surface against that line.

now the reason for the steel curve......you can then cut the line with a scalpel

You see the trick is.

You draw your lines first.

then cut into the lines with a Scalpel or Hobby knife.

What this does is allow you to then run a Scriber into the cut line.

What your doing is making a guide for your scriber to cut into and score the surface.

Most people will try and scribe the line on the surface of the plastic.

But this is where you can go wrong and wonder off the line or find it difficult to bite into the surface.

With a fine line cut with a Scalpel first, this will allow the Scriber to run smoothly in a guided rail line.

As for clamping the models when gluing or scribing.

I always scribe parts before I put them together !

Not easy scribing on a model once it's all together,

and as for gluing, well wooden cloths pegs are some of the best....and cheapest clamps you can get !

Elastic bands wrapped around the two half's is another trick.

You can also Tape the large part to your desk with masking tape !

I have done this a few times, Also taped a large part to a Wooden Board so I could then keep it on a stable surface, but still move the part around on the board.

Kind of like a crude Jig.

Y jaw clamps which I picked up from a cheap hardware store and the best clamps of all.

Metal Bull Dog Clips.

the Bull dog clips you can get in any stationary store. I Like them because of there flat surface jaws.

and the rolled spring makes the clamp very strong.....they have a good vice grip !

means things wont move when your working on them.

just be careful when using plastic weld and clamps.

The plastic weld as you know uses capillary action, and the glue can run into the surface area where the clamp is holding the part !

" This has happened to me and its a real pain in the a$$ when it happens "

lots of clean up

So be careful there.

Hope that little bit of Info Helps Ian.

All the best,

Barry.

Cheers, Barry - sure I have some Bulldogs somewhere, will hunt them down...

...I remember my father had a mini vice where the jaws were actually a Bulldog on a ball-joint, so easily poseable - he used it for holding circuit boards whilst soldering - unfortunately, I think it ended up as part of a slag-heap when his shed burnt down! ...and I've never seen one since, all you tend to see are the 'helping-hands' with crocodile-clips & magnifier...

Good advice re scribing the unassembled model...unfortunately I'm working on an engine that is on a centre-join line so really had to assemble and then scribe...will try and g-cramp it to a work surface with some cloth pads to protect it and see if I can get it to say put

Thanks again for all the help & tips...will certainly try and find a fine liner template to scribe those compound curve guidelines ;)

Barry hit just about all the tricks for (re)scribing panel lines. One he didn't mention is Dymo Label tape. The younger crowd may not be aware of this stuff but old guys used it a lot.

The tape is a relatively thick plastic that has an adhesive backing. Remove the protective film from the back of the tape and apply. Then use the edge of the tape as your scribe guide.

Check some of the larger model companies on the web. There are panel scribing templates available for different scales (1/32nd, 1/48th and 1/72nd) and may prove useful for the larger models, like the Decimator, Lancer, etc.

Have you done any Protectorate Star Fighters yet? I was looking to re paint mine, just unsure of a theme.

Yes I have repainted them in different Schemes and Modified some of them as well.

Pages 8,9 and 11

I have painted a Camouflaged squad and one in a Macross inspired scheme.

All the best,

Barry.

Little more work on the Winters inspired Jumpmaster transport.

Finished most of the building work and now sprayed the model with grey primer to see

how it all looks and see what needs tidying up.

Can't wait to see the paint scheme on this, especially with all that surface detail !

Hey Ian, yes the shading and highlighting will be fun.....lots of drybrushing.

although the overall colour will be plain green like the ship its inspired by.

some better shots of the model.

just some surface clean up around a few fine parts of the detail then on to paint......

Hi Ian, yea its about time I got the Firespray finished !

Some extra body work to finish on the model then finally get some colour on it.

As for the the YT 1930, yep....another falcon model goes under the knife !

And its the new one, but as I'm not a fan of Force Awakens, don't mind cutting this one up.
