Harker's SCUM Re-Paints & Conversions

By Barry Harker, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Based on your happiness with the product, I went and bought some Frog Tape this weekend, and it works as advertised. Clean lines all day long! Which made me wonder about that yellow colored tape you used on the Lancer. Out of curiosity, why go with that one? Is it easier to apply since it is thinner? Is there something better than Frog Tape? Banana Tape?

And as an aside:

Barry, thanks for being so thorough in your shots showing your process. You are the finest ambassador for the X-Wing Painting/Mod community that I can think of; always cordial and supportive, with tips, tricks and advice.

If anyone hasn't said it before, thank you for your contributions.

Hello Majeure.

The yellow tape is indeed thinner.

It is TAMIYA masking tape.

I will put a link on later, about where to purchase it.

I bought it of eBay.

It is great because you can scribe into panel lines, then cut with a scalpel to get the shape you want.

Green frog tape is great for heavy duty painting.

TAMIYA for the fine stuff.

And thanks for your comments.

I'm glad my tips and tricks help others.

Sharing the knowledge is only a good thing, and it helps others enjoy the hobby more.

All the best.

Barry

This certainly seems different from your usual paintstyle that we know from your crazy scum builds. Thats some versatility!

Thanks Deathrain .

Do you use an airbrush for all this? I assume so.

I think I want to invest in an airbrush. And an extraction booth.

I do use an airbrush sometimes...I have to many to be honest !

But....

Most of my X wing models are painted with Aerosol spray paint cans....rattle cans in the US.

Grey primer from Halfords

Colours are Humbrol Acrylic spray cans.

All the paint is Acrylic.

Never ever use Cellulose paint on plastic models...you will melt them !

I will put some photos up tomorrow showing all of the paint I use.

All the best,

Barry

Epic.

Every time i think im getting good at Mods/painting, i step in here, and Barry humbles me. In a great way.

Thanks for keeping this updated Barry.

Nearly finished.

Just need to gloss the window canopies to give them a glass shine, but basically done.

Used them in a match last weekend, and Whoa. those protectorate fighters are evil.

I had a 200 point game, finished the match with no losses.

I like these new ships !

I tried to keep the paint scheme as simple as possible, as it is a Military camouflage scheme.

so other than the recognition markings to avoid blue on blue. nice and simple.

Here is my Protectorate inspired Ywing with yellow crystals for the engine glare.

there is a Ywing centre section, Syck body and wings, T70 engine nacelles and Decimator turret weapon.

Do you think the people you play with are so impressed with your ships that they don't have the heart to "damage" them in battle? Hence no losses? :P

The Awesome Protectorate fighter in a simple camo with yellow crystals for engine glare.....

That scheme really suits the Kihraxz, seems to emphasise the 'Heavy Fighter' look ;)

Ha Ha well I did feel guilty afterwards !

a white wash against Imperials was a bit embarrassing......and my dice rolls that day were spot on :D

I have learnt that the protectorates need to be in swift and fast, full on attack along with Talonbane Cobra,

And the Ywing and Lancer fly on the outskirts in a flanking position utilizing their turrets.

I also have a long stand to keep the Winged Lancer up out of the way of other models.......no crashing on the table !

Flying Wing Lancer.

Inspired by the Nazi flying wing in Raiders of the lost Ark.

When I put my Winged Lancer next to a Normal Lancer now........the standard Lancer looks odd, as i'm used to it having wings !

The model has a longer custom stand to keep it up out of the way of other models.

its has some slight weathering and shading overall, and a new scratch built turret weapon.

Along with the wing area and rear upper stabilizers and thrust vector engine nacelles.....

This entire thread is so inspirational. I really love the camo patterns on your Scum ships. It makes it feel like they truly are operating off of some backwater planet and trying to stay under the radar as much as possible.

It is a break from the traditional Star wars look.

But then these are a separate group of Mandalalorians that are staying under the Radar of the Empire.

I have thought about going a step further and setting up the models in a forest diorama setting.

Kind of " home base "

Have some great locations where I live.

Thanks for the comments.

Those are masterfully done, sir. Whenever my wife asks me why I'm freaking out about some artwork, I point to your latest spacecraft on the screen.

Thank you, man. :D

Following on from my Z-95 VIPER.

i am currently building three new Fighters, But this time Inspired by other great Builders on this Forum.

Firstly....

Macross ( Ken ) and his Fantastic SHMUP Fighters !

Soon as I caught a glimpse of Ken's new Modifications I thought......Brilliant.

I have to have a go at some of these.

Although I had to do a little research first.

I instantly fell in love with the Vic Viper. The Japanese certainly know how to design some great looking Mecha and Fighters.

I have been an Anime fan for years. So i'm very familiar with all of the Robotech and Macross variants.

So my inspired Shmup Fighters will follow that path.

Using the Protectorate Star Fighter as a base .

Thanks again to Ken for the Inspiration :D

One of the builds is an easy start. Taking an existing model. a small scale F14 Tomcat.

And cutting and shaping the Parts to incorporate the Pro fighter.......

Fwkr9d.jpg

Dint take a lot of work but I like the look of it, Has a kind of Macross VF4 look about it other than the over sized laser cannons !

Also went for the thrust vector style of the Macross fighters.........

These Mandalorian Mercenary's are going to have some fancy looking Protectorate fighters.

This Pro fighter is more so inspired by Ken's fighter......the Vic Viper.

Firstly cutting out all of the sections for each half of the wings and body.......

EXrjig.jpg

Everything is plastic welded together and now I have a lot of panel scribing to do over the body work and wings.......

Now something I have been wanting to do for a long time........Cut up an Ugly G1-A

I know what I wanted it to resemble.

There are aspects of the G1-A that I like, the Engines look fantastic. and I like the bulky armoured looking body work.

but its to......Stumpy !

Lt03Qq.jpg

Then I had seen what Siddhi had done with his Upside Down Mist Hunter.

And thought.......Ahhh now that looks better already !

I could now do what I had intended to do, take Siddhi's Idea and turn the Mist Hunter Into a Mandalorian Ground Attack Gunship

And style it on the Cool and Monstrous looking Mil Hind 24........

IZ0aRL.jpg

With an added scratchbuilt tail section with ALIENS Dropship Style rear wing stabilisers.

Wing weapon load out pods from the K wing ( converting one of those as well ^_^ )

added extra munitions from small scale aircraft kits.

YT2400 gun turret, I wanted the front end to look overpowering and nasty.

And the Cockpit canopy from a small snapkit Clone Wars Republic Gunship.

KPJxlY.jpg

turned upside down you can see how it goes together.....

The rear Tail adds an extra focal point to the short stubby body of the Misthunter.

for me, it evens out the look of what are some good looking pieces on the G1-A, and also removing the oversized

cockpit window canopy should help bring in the scale a bit more.

Sprayed the G1-A HIND in primer to see how it looks.

Some surface tidying and finishing and then on with the paint.

Im going to paint it in the Same Camouflage pattern as my other Mandalorians.

But instead of using the green/grey scheme it will be in a green/beige tan.

to Emphasise the ground attack role. and play a further homage to the Hind Gunships ;)

Should be working on these over the next week.

so Ill post more photos soon.

All the best,

Barry :D
