Does a Discarded Card Still Resolve When Triggered?

By JLeisten, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If multiple card abilities trigger and a triggered card is discarded before it actually resolves, does the discarded card ability still resolve?

For example, Boba Fett (crew) and Chewbacca (crew) both trigger off a faceup critical hit.

If the Boba Fett player has initiative and discards Chewbacca, will Chewbacca's unresolved card ability still resolve?

Is this a gray area, or are there actual rules that support one side or the other?

I'm pretty sure that Chewbacca is robbed of the ability to discard the crit, the idea being that he's removed from play before he has the opportunity to trigger in the resolution sequence.

Maybe this isn't the case with matching pilot skills, though? But even then I'm inclined to say no.

Edit: Though reviewing the trigger windows, I'd give it to initiative since they're both identical. Another possible interpretation is that Chewbacca gets to flip it face down (as well as himself) and then Boba is still able to trigger because the card was dealt faceup.

So the defender's best case is losing Chewie AND a different upgrade card, but discarding the damage card and recovering a shield.

If 2 players have abilities that trigger within the same timing window they they are resolved in initiative order - see page 16 of the FAQ

However Chewbacca vs Boba Fett is a bad example as they have slightly different timing windows.

Chewbacca triggers "When you are dealt a Damage card...." so if he was being attacked by a ship equipped with Boba crew he would trigger during the "Deal Damage" step of the attack sequence

(note that this isn't the only time you can trigger chewbacca - obstacle damage and bomb damage could also potentially trigger him outside of the combat phase)

Boba Fett (crew) triggers "After performing an attack, if the defender was dealt a faceup Damage card ......" in other words once the attack sequence has been fully resolved and after the defender has had an opportunity to use chewie

Good catch. I knew I was missing some slight timing issue there. Agreed, bad example.... But, you get the general idea of the question.

If the card isn't in play, you can't resolve it. The fact that it was triggered is irrelevant if you haven't resolved it.

As stated above, Chewie and Fett do not have the same timing window. Chewbacca will always resolve before Boba Fett does.

So a better test case would be Boba Fett crew discarding R5-P8 (the salvaged astro that rolls an attack die to maybe do damage to the attacker after an attack). Both have the same timing window, so if the Boba player has initiative, he can blow up the murder droid before it gets a chance to activate.

If it's discarded it is out of play for all purposes except calculating squad point cost.

But as noted, Chewie (crew)'s trigger happens earlier than Boba (crew)'s does, so Chewie can be used before Boba has a chance to discard him. Boba still triiggers, so he could discard another upgrade if there was one, but Chewie can be used first.
