Starting from scratch, looking to get into Scum and Villainy

By SplittingImage77, in X-Wing

Hello everyone! I've always wanted to get into X-Wing but never had the chance to. Or rather, I don't know where to start. I have no X-wing products whatsoever and I was wondering what would be the quickest way to get into Scum and Villainy.

Should I start off with a core set? The original or The Force Awakens version? What should I invest in next?

I suppose the ships and modifications caught my attention. On another note, how does Scum and Villainy compare to the Rebels and Empire? What sets each faction apart from the others?

Thanks for your help!

I would get 1 of each core set then most wanted as a jumping in point. that will start you off with a bit of every thing. the down side being that a lot of the cards scum want come in rebel or empire expansions

Force Awakens Core Set has a (mostly) better damage deck.

Most Wanted is pretty mandatory for Scum

The wave 8 ships are very good:

- Jumpmaster (Punishing One)

- G-1A (MistHunter)

HWK-290 is a good ship, and you get the cards to run it as Scum in Most Wanted.

A pair of IG-88s are popular. They get bonuses for running as a pair, so you'd mostly want to not use them with other lists.

Whatever looks fun? :)

Edit: This page has a good overview of each ship and should also help

If you don't want to get Rebels or Imps, I still suggest one Force Awakens Core. But not two. You can buy a set of dice too.

After that, Most Wanted, 1 Punishing One (Jumpmaster 5000), 1 Hound's Tooth is plenty!!

After that, you can get 2 IGs, a G1-A Mist Hunter, A hwk, (a K-wing for TLT), and a second Punishing One and you should feel like you have a great set of ships to work with.

Oh and of course, if the new Wave9 Protectorate should be really good, and the Shadow Caster will probably be also. Though, I personally will likely only get the Protector.

The Firespray isn't that worth it right now. Nor the Starviper, Scyk or the Kirhaksjdnfmsd. You don't really need Autothrusters that much. Just for IGs.

The Khiraxz is a good filler! Solid firepower for comparatively few points.

Talonbane is (short lived) aggressive fun. And you get Crackshot and Glitterstim without needing to pay for the large based YV, if you do not anyway want to buy it.

With the Fang coming out I advocate against the Scyk. I have 2 myself, and they are fun to fly, but if the Fang turns out to be like it seems right now, then you can park the Scyk on Mos Eisley junkyard.

I dissagree..... the cost of an extra core set over a set of dice. Having one of each core set will give you different Asteroids, different up grade cards, extra dice and movement templates (not to mention the ships)

Well, if the OP is anything like most of us on the forums, it won't be long until he plays all the factions. In that case, both core sets will be a good investment. If he is strictly adhering to a scum-only policy, then I agree with Blail Blerg - one Force Awakens core set will be plenty to start off with.

And yes, the Firespray is in a weird (weak?) spot right now competitively, but it gives you some cool upgrades like Gunner, Stealth Device, and some useful bombs for your Y-wings. And it's Boba Fett! How can you not fly Boba Fett?

Thanks for your imput everyone! I'm really excited. I think for the sake of budget, I'll just pice up The Force Awaken Core into Most Wanted and Punishing One and see where to go from there. I didn't know that the Punishing One was a Scum ship! I have a thing for asymmetrical ships. The new wave IX ships caught my eye too! Can't wait to see what's in store! Scuuuum.

Any other beginners advice in making purchases and getting into X-Wing?

Once you pick up the Force Awakens core set, Most Wanted and a Punishing One, my recommendations for next purchase are:

  • A HWK-290 - allows you to fly the Scum HWK pilots from Most Wanted, especially Palob and Mux, as well as more turrets for your Y-wing and more crew (Recon Specialist, Intel agent)
  • A K-wing - gives you more bombs and 2x TLT
  • The Hounds Tooth. Awesome ship, great upgrades and only gets stronger as Scum gets more and more crew. Also gets you Engine Upgrade for your JumpMaster, if you want to fly dodgy Dengar.
  • A second Most Wanted. More z-95s and another Y-wing. More illicit upgrades and salvaged agromechs.

Easiest way to get into scum is the Brobot list. If you are flying casual they should be alright. But they can be dominated in tourney play atm. I wanted to play S&V, turned to the Imperials as they had the ships I wanted to fly, ie fast little fighters. Wave 10 could be very good for you.

In case OP is not familiar with the terminology

Brobots = 2 x IG-2000

Brobots = 2 x IG-2000

I did something I hate in others... I use nerd speak to people who may not know, sorry OP.

One question I do want to ask is how are you going to play? There is a big split between tournament games and casual games. For tournament play, there are a lot of ships that get discarded as not being powerful enough. Basically, you only have so many "competitive" builds for the tournament scene. Few try to come up with their own lists and everyone just copies each other's lists. If you want to go to tournaments, this is the way you should go.

If you want to have more fun and are not as obsessed with winning a Regionals, then any ship is fine. They are all really cool. Even the ones that people say are "no good" really aren't that bad. The Scyk has some good builds and one of them even placed at a Store Championship, so take everything with a grain of salt. Personally, I don't feel like Scum has really been explored as much and there are a lot of cool things in the faction.

If you want to go with the heavy tournament build, the cheapest way to get those lists would probably be to buy 3 Jumpmasters and buy single card upgrades off ebay.

there really is no point to get a set of dice over the 2nd core. Its basically free dice when you factor in theres technically 45USD worth of expansions in there via ships, not factoring the deck, templates, tokens, etc etc. If you truely dont want rebels or imperials, then just trade the ships off and keep the rest. Plenty of people buy several scum ships for the cards alone that you'd probably want the ship itself for anyway.

Though i'd say scum are the most expensive faction because they were shoe-horned in rather than given their own starter and complete unique ships. Lot of their ships are Rebel ships that you trade the pilot cards for in Most Wanted, and a lot of the really nice upgrades they want are in Imperial boxes.

Meanwhile as an imperial player i technically bought 4 expansions that arent imperial for cards i needed. I have both imp/rebels now because i like variety though.

As someone else who recently got into the game, don't start buying ships just for the upgrades until you're sure the venue you're playing at cares. I see a couple people recommending the k-wing, but unless you're playing at tournaments immediately your friends will probably let you print those turbo laser turrets on yardstick. In the beginning focus on the ships.

That and GL finding a Kwing anyway. THE most bought ship because it has 3 **** upgrades unique to it literally everybody wants.

Like Heychadwick said, decide how you want to play the game first, which mostly depends on the people you will be playing with.

If you like the ships from scum and villainy, probably the most wanted set is the most bang for your buck to start off. You don't need to get a starter set, you can just buy the damage deck and templates you need off ebay or ask around your community, there are usually people like me who just spend more money than they should be and have like 4 of everything.

I'd recommend getting the large ships first, playing aces is a lot more nuanced, harder to pick up when you are learning the game. So the Firespray, YV-666, jumpmaster 5k are all good ones (JM5K being the most competive in twos and threes, YV with certain upgrades very good against aces). Most wanted set + a large ship of choice is a great combo and will give you enough ships to experiment and play with. I would not recommend Dual IG-2000's (or brobots) as I'd classify them as aces really (not until you are more experienced at the game), unless you just really really like the ships.

While I prefer the small based ships, I agree with Meade that it will be easier to get to 100 pts by getting larger ships. There are also great crew and upgrades with the big ships.

Its basically free dice when you factor in theres technically 45USD worth of expansions in there via ships, not factoring the deck, templates, tokens, etc etc.

For someone who is only going to do S&V there is nothing in the original core that's worth having.

The new deck is actually better. There is no need for more tokens, every ship comes with enough. You can get a set of dice for $8 MSRP and then buy a set of acrylic tokens for less then a 2nd core set.

Something I always recommend with any miniature game:

Get what ever looks coolest. In the end if you have the most powerful ships but you hate the look, you'll fall out of the hobby fairly fast, but if you have ships that look cool, even if you're losing, at least you're playing your favorite ships.

Since you won't be doing tournaments right off the bat, I suggest you go TFA Core, Most Wanted, Slave One (Firespray).

I know the Slave One isn't "powerful" in the current meta, but it starts you with an iconic ship and the Slave One is a fantastic way to learn about upgrades, pilot abilities and different ways of play. The Aux firing arc plus bombs will teach you different aspects of how to play and get your mind thinking a couple moves ahead. (One of the best things for training me to get better was have to plan for where I would drop bombs because it subtly trains you to guide ships to where you want, which is vital later.)

  • A second Most Wanted. More z-95s and another Y-wing. More illicit upgrades and salvaged agromechs.

If you're going heavy on the Y-Wings - keep in mind the set comes with 2 Y-wing dials not one.

As such, 2 Most Wanted sets and 2 Rebel Y-Wings, means you can field 4 Scum Y-wings, all with Scum dials. And you can field all of them as Hired Guns, or all of them as Syndicate Thugs, and give all of them the Y-Wing Only Upgrades, since they come 2 to a box.

While I prefer the small based ships, I agree with Meade that it will be easier to get to 100 pts by getting larger ships. There are also great crew and upgrades with the big ships.

I like small based ships as well, mostly my reasoning here is that over and over again, i see beginners picking up things like the dual IG list (because its the 'quickest' way to get a tournament-caliber list), and then just getting frustrated immediately because they haven't learned the basics like maneuvering, blocking, and deciding where and when to engage or run away.

I don't think Most Wanted is all that great for someone who is just building their collection. It's alright, but it doesn't give the "bang for your buck" that it did for most players when it was released, because to get the most out of it, you really want a HWK-290 expansion, Slave I expansion, and a Y-wing expansion. Some of the best cards in the set come in other Scum and Villainy expansions (K4 Security droid in the Hound's Tooth expansion).

Rather than say it's a good deal, I would say Most Wanted is a good expansion for getting filler ships (because sometimes it's hard to fill up 100 points and you want a cheap, 12-point ship to fill up those points). That said, filler ships are only worth it if you are playing 100-point games. If you're playing other point formats, you might be able to make squads without needing filler ships. Most Wanted is also good for when your collection starts to expand and you can add ships to your Scum and Villainy faction.

I agree with those who suggested the Mist Hunter, Hound's Tooth, and Punishing One expansion packs. Those ones have some great cards in them and, in my opinion, are pretty self-sufficient without needing a lot of external upgrade cards.

New Core x1 (extra set of dice too)

Most Wanted x1

Houndstooth x1

Punishing One x2

IG-2000 x2

Star Viper x1

I would buy in this order. IGs and Star Viper should be purchased together as the IGs will always be flown with Autothrusters (two of these cards come in the Star Viper expansion). As a multi-faction player who really loves Scum and plays them primarily, the BroBots (two IG's) are really fun to fly and have been competitive (both for casual and tournament play) in every meta since they launched. Every Scum player should have them.
