Clone wars,show,movie,animated movie. Which first?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Just started the clone wars series on Netflix since there's no rebels.

And..I'm immediately lost.

Whats the correct order for this stuff?

It's between episodes 1 and 2?

Two and three?

Am I supposed to watch the animated movie before the series or after?

Before... the animated movie is basically the pilot episode for the series. The movie starts with Anakin meeting Asoka, who is already a main character by the first episode of the series.

Perfect. Thank-you.

I went through this same mess with firefly .

The Clone Wars series takes place between Episodes 2 & 3. The episode are a bit out of chronological order. If that bothers you, you can go to http://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-the-clone-wars-chronological-episodeorder to get the chronological order of the entire series, including the pilot episodes.

For some reason, the series was not made in chronological order.

I would skip the movie (It's not very good) and watch the episodes in the order listed by Patox.

Also make sure to watch the Tartakovsky Clone Wars if you ever get the chance. It's gorgeously animated and has the most badass action scenes in Star Wars.

There's a movie?

Good to know. I thought it was just a series. Fact that I got the complete seasons 1-5 box set made me think I wasn't missing anything. Got Lost Missions too.

The movie introduces one of the best Star Wars characters ever.

The movie, in my opinion, ranges from 'Eh ok' to "uhh... no.' but it does introduce Ahsoka which is important.

If you're going to watch TCW, migth as well watch it all and PLEASE do it in chronological order. It will make the experience way better.

Plus if anything watching the movie gives you something to compare the later seasons to and then you can be blown away by the difference in quality a couple seasons makes.

I've found the movie much more enjoyable after seeing the whole series again on rewatch.

It is fairly important to watch. Besides meeting ahsoka the plot arc shows up in a couple other episodes. Plus it's cool having Samuel L Jackson and Christopher Lee do the voices.

You have to watch it in chronological order or it won't make sense.

I'm not clear on the "chronological order" thing.

The lost above just goes...in order ?

But it's not the same as if I just plow through Netflix one after another ?

When the show was originally produced/aired there were occasional episodes and story arcs that were out of chronological order. A character who had been killed in a previous episode shows up alive unexpectedly, an upside happens that obviously takes place minutes after the end of a previous episode but there are a dozen episodes in between them. Things like that.

Then somebody analysed the various events depicted in the show and determined the above order as being the one that best preserves continuity. Note, that list above starts with a second season episode.

If you know that happens, I haven't found it particularly jarring for the occasional episode to be out of sequence, but if you are so inclined, watching them in chronological order can be cool.

I do think that the theatrical film should be watched first though. It introduces a couple of key characters and is structured as an introduction. I found starting with "Cat and Mouse" felt like you were just dropped into the middle of things.

Basically, it's not a huge deal, as long as you get the introductions of Ahsoka and Ventress.

I'll admit first watch through I would recommend watching in production order. That way every character and most planets get introductions the first time you see them. The jumble doesn't really cost you anything, especially when the early episodes are doing the whole 'old news real' style intro.

Watching chronologically results in some jarring changes in style, and doesn't really gain much for the cassualy viewer.

Edit: it's also a lot of faf. When the episodes are only 20mins long and so much of that is intro/credits is it really worth scrolling back and fore to find work disparate episodes?

It might help to explain this list. The Air # is what order to watch it in. The Title is the season/episode number. T is the Theatrical movie release.

So, start with Season 2, episode 16. Next, watch Season 1, episode 16. After that, watch the Clone Wars animated movie. After that, watch Season 3, episode 1, followed by Season 3, episode 3. After that....you start with Season 1, episode 1.

Yes, it's crazy, but it really is better to watch it this way.

Personally, I think that you should watch Season 1 of the first The Clone Wars that was done by the Dexter's Laboratory guy. That has Anakin as a padawan. It introduces Grievous. It introduces Ventress. Anakin gets his scar. Anakin becomes a full jedi. Then start watching the list in order above.

After all of the above are watched, then see Season 2 of the original Clone Wars cartoon as it leads up to capturing Palpatine in Ep 3.

I'll admit first watch through I would recommend watching in production order.

Ugh....I do not recommend this. I watched it the first time through in the chrono order and I greatly appreciate it. I couldn't imagine watching it in production order.

I watched it in broadcast order (I was just watching it in season order on Netflix), and honestly, it really didn't bother me. When something showed up that clearly happened earlier, I just figured they were telling a story from a different time, which is what they were doing. I viewed it as an anthology of small stories from the war, not a big overarching single story, so the order was a lot less critical.

I do like how Asoka gets taller as the series goes on.

Wait...there's a separate series now as well?

Er...huh.

Right....so.....before Episode 3 came out, Lucas Arts hired a cartoonist to do these little shorts that were to be released as the new movie got closer and closer. It was the same guy who did Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack. The first season was a bunch of shorts. They were about 5 min each? They were random stuff. At the end, they talk about some new enemy general. Season 2 is all about General Grevious and how he captures Palpatine. It ends right where Episode 3 starts. It was very short. That's all it is.

They then made The Clone Wars series and it's done with higher quality animation and extended story arcs and such. It's what you know as The Clone Wars. The other ones aren't really necessary, unless you want to watch Epiosde 3. You get to find out why Grevious is all finding it hard to breath.

And while you're at it, in between play some Republic Commando's. :P.

The chronological "issues" mostly revolve around that they tell the backstory of some of the clone troopers after we've already seen the fate of those troopers right? I've watched and enjoyed the series a few times and haven't noticed any other things being out of order.

Assuming of course you are concentrating solely on the computer-animated material and not the traditional drawn animated series or print media.

You can "get by" without watching in chrono order, but it's so much better to watch them in sequence. Why wouldn't you?

Because it's such a hassle when using a streaming service. :P.

Likewise, I just accepted that Anakin has an apprentice, didn't feel the need to go watch the precious stuff.

You can "get by" without watching in chrono order, but it's so much better to watch them in sequence. Why wouldn't you?

Because the continuity errors add to the "old serial" feel of the show.

Well, not wanting to spoil too much, but there is a dead senator who shows up layer for a story arc.

That was the ONLY thing I actually noticed when I watched it while it was airing.

Because it's a pain in the ass to stop playback and look up a website every 20 minutes instead of just hitting play and enjoying the show for 3-4 hours.
