Imperial Aces

By Kyl0REN, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've got this imperial ace list I want to try out. I'm figuring that Omega Leader might be a better choice than Darth Vader. I'm not sure though

Here's the list

Soontir Fel - 35

Autothrusters- 2

Royal Guard TIE - 0

Stealth Device- 3

Push the limit - 3

The Inquisitor - 34

Autothrusters - 2

TIE/v1 - 1

Push the limit -3

Proton Rockets - 3

Omega leader-30

Shield upgrade- 4

Juke - 2

Comm relay -3

Squad points - 99

The list is fine

Omega Leader is fairly solid, although his damage output is a bit on the low side (in a 3 ship build it matters, with more ships less so). His overall effectiveness is also dependent somewhat on the number of enemy ships: the more there are, the less likely he will have a significant impact on the match.

He does counter other imperial aces somewhat, so that is a plus. He's also a lot cheaper than Vader, so there's that too. Vader overall is pretty great in terms of damage output (as long as you don't need to switch target locks often). Vader's biggest weakness is lack of autothrusters: ordnance that catches him in arc can mess him up and so can accurate turrets. This can be true for omega leader too, except his ability really helps him survive if you get the TL on your opponent's biggest threat (to OL).

Crackswarms can be difficult for this list if they are flown well, but otherwise you won't have any inherently bad matchups...

I really like Triple Aces..It's what I tend to fly as well (I'm more into interceptors), but have tried basically a copy of what you have there, using both Vader and OL.

I guess it kinda depends on what you aim for. As blade_mercurial said, if you want heavy-hitting bring Vader along. If you can fly him well (which I've had a hard time doing, but that's on me) he can be a relatively decent arc dodger. On the other hand, OL's ability is difficult to argue against and can be a huge pain in the ass.

Either way, they're both fun solid lists.

I find the secret to flying Vader well is to go with long moves often, like the 3 turns/banks, but switch it up once in a while with 1 bank/2 straight to keep your opponent guessing.

Unlike Soontir, who wants to do hard 2 then barrel roll inside to dodge firing arcs, Vader prefers to do 3 turn/bank and barrel roll outside the firing arc (although he can dodge an arc the other way too, its just that if your opponent is expecting it, the 3 bank/turn + barrel roll out, plus possible boost is much harder to predict)

My only concern is that Vader can be a soft target. I mean disabling your opponent's ability to change dice can be pretty powerful.

Also, I'm wondering if a jouster would be better than having another arc dodger so that the list doesn't have all the same weaknesses that an all arc dodger list would have.

Pretty solid. I've found Soontir and Inq excellent.

OML can be a little squishy, but also depends on how well you can fly them! I'm still learning.

Carnor is another option.

My typical TripA's is Soontir/Inquis/Echo... and mostly the classic builds for each. serve's me well with my limited collection :)

In the current meta I'd be inclined to drop down to Carnor rather than Soontir and take the 3-point bid. PS8 is the most common PS right now, and a lot of people run with a 2 point bid, so the 3 point bid gets you arcdodging against them.

And Carnor is the be(a)st against U-boats :) Since they can't fire their torpedos when he's around.

That's why I suggested him, if not for u-boats Carnor would be unquestionably worse.

No, he's not unquestionably worse. It depends on the list, regardless of whether u-boats are popular or not. There are some lists where Carnor is way more useful than Soontir. Soontir is definitely easier to use though, so its no wonder that he is more popular.
