By Kelvan, in X-Wing

Duncan and Jeremy are kind enough to join Kelvan, Blair and Antigrapist this week as they cover the news, how to play Palp Aces and more importantly how to play against it

I'll apologize for the audio quality. We had to use a backup file.

I take the episode off for my birthday and look what happens! :)

It was fun listening you put the screws to the Howard bothers on how to beat their own list :)

Yeah they started to get a little squirly once we started asking about hot to beat it.

Not going to lie, that Rey build partially blew my mind:

Rey+daredevil+engine+HotR title+kannan+[whatever crew].....

Lock in a 3 bank. As long as it doesn't bump (and you have a decent amount of room around the ship when you land), Rey can point in ANY of the 8 primary angles ON DEMAND. That's a pretty good way to counter Autothrusters and turn on her pilot ability.

So when will we get Scum Aces FFG? The Scyk is feeling so sad it is always trying to commit suicide by flying off the table when ever I put it on.

They are releasing a fixed Scyk. They just turned it around and called it a Fang.

It's Reydiculous!

Which channel did stream the Regional Mr. Howard won?

Just getting into the episode, but I'm happy that you briefly touched on the topic of Casual play. I think Fly Casual has moved away from tournament attitude of letting people do moves that they forgot and moving more towards non-tournament games.

Have you tried them with Attani Mindlink? The action economy makes them quite durable. I think someone placed at either a Regionals or SC with them. Maybe SC?

This sounds great but unfortunately her ability is pretty lackluster if you dont have a focus token (which you wont if you use your action for daredevil). Not being able to reroll focuses is a pretty big deal without a focus.

The math is already implemented here: http://xwingcalculator.x10host.com/diceuilm.html

short version : Rey's 2 reroll ability is worse than Predator with 1reroll if you dont have a focus token (1.86 vs 1.93). It is slightly better if you do (2,8 vs 2,68 expected hits).

And here's the worst part: Predator works every time, not just when you have the enemy in your arc, which fundamentally alters Rey's playstyle.

Extra note: Without focus Rey's ability is mathematically virtually identical to Han's pilot ability (1.86 vs 1.87 expected hits). With focus Rey pulls ahead (2.8 vs 2.46). But then again Han Solo works every turn while Rey's ability is highly situational. And Han Solo+-Predator is virtually identical to Rey except it works every time.

Yes you're reading correctly, even if you put in the work to pull off Rey's ability AND somehow manage to still have a focus token the expected damage is virtually identical to Han+Predator which works every freakin time (2.8 vs 2.77).

Unlike say Dengar, her ability will not be a deterrent for enemy ships to joust Rey. Quite the opposite actually, if you try to joust with Rey you are almost guaranteed to have a very bad time.

I'm not trying to be a downer at all, in fact i'm quite excited for new yt1300 pilots, but Math does not seem to be on Rey's side.

I have proxied Rey and even with the reroll's she is not a jouster, so you have to play her more or less like good old Han. Plus she pretty much needs her elite slot to be VI or adaptability or else you wont be able to make use of her ability against arc dodgers (>PS8) much. Having the evade action or sloop is situational, but Rey also wants Kanan which is not an optimal choice for the yt-1300 (either c3p0 or Gunner/Luke has to go). The reroll on defense is marginal (+0,14 expected evades with 1die) unless you have a focus for defense (+0,23 expected evades), but then again if you're spending a focus for defense you would mathematically be much better off with an evade token.

In conclusion i do not see much upside with Rey's ability compared to Han, therefore i highly doubt that her ability alone is going to bring the yt-1300 back into the meta. It's too situational and not that good even if you pull it off.

tldr: For me personally her ability works out WORSE overall than Han+predator. Math seems to support this.

I don't always listen to X-Wing podcasts, but when I do, I'll sometimes listen to the S&V podcast instead of or in addition to the other X-Wing podcasts.

Great show as always!

Just got around to listening! Thanks for picking my list guys!

Ya after playing around with Rey a bit more, Daredevil on Rey is pretty much niche at best. Whenever I had a chance to pull off the Daredevil maneuver, I didn't see it paying off enough to feel it was paying for itself. I've since moved on to Push, and if I ever look to fly her competitively, think that might even be changed to Adaptability, which, in that case, I'll start questioning why I'm not just flying Han anyways...

The math notes are really interesting. A bit unfortunate though. Rey is fantastic to fly, and you really feel her pilot ability taking you away from the "easy mode" problem most turrets have. But, if she's not getting anything over Han, there's not much reason to take her. Guess her builds will be cheaper though, so that's something.

8 angles and like 11 different positions.

Being Scum and Villains, you should kidnap one Howard brother and make the other Howard give up all his secrets. That would really be putting the screws to them.

Hey, thanks for the shout out guys! Something you didn't mention that I think is important. I'm not just begging for money with no reward. I'm going to code up an Android version of Cryodex for all you folks trying to run events on your tablet or smartphone.

Monetary contributions arent the only thing I'm accepting. I'd love to hear from the community how you'd like it to look or work. Got an app you really like? Got a feature in an app you really like? Let me know and I'll try to incorporate it into my design.
