Top swiss results Yavin Open

By Sarcon, in X-Wing

I made a quick picture of the top swiss results of the Yavin Open dor whoever is interested. Personally I'm a bit bummed out because of missing out on the cut on a 12 MOV difference, but then again I was not really expecting to make it to day 2 either.

It was a fun event! 414 players, the largest ever. It was nice to see the tie swarm win.

Oh I missed that, cool thanks.

Anyway, this is what top 32 gets you:

Top8 cut for such a large crowd is quite ridiculous.

The game is growing too fast for its current tournament framework, imho.

Agreed 100%. Friend of mine missed the cut by less than a TIE Fighter (11 points) over 9 games.

Top 8 cut was terrifying as a Swarm player. MOV is not usually my friend so I knew I had to go 8-1. Luckily I managed it and took 3rd in swiss. Even refused an ID in round 9 to make sure!

TBF, there was a cut before that - they cut to all the people who had 18+ points for the second day, i.e. the first 6 games were with everyone, the remaining 3 before the top cut were with only those who had at least 18 points from 6 games i.e. a minimum of all mod wins, or 3 full wins and one mod win, or some combination thereof. So there was some refinement of the field before the top 8.

(I didn't make the second day having won my first two games then cratered thereafter :( )

I think it's because of time. With top16 or top32 it wouldn't be possible to finish tournament on Sunday within reasonable hours. Ppl needs to get home, and this is international event not the local one so air transport is heavy involved I presume.

This is true, but there were over 130 players who made it to day two. And as MOV wasn't reset like it was in Hoth most of those 4 - 2 players had zero chance at qualification for the top 8. I wouldn't have flown a swarm if I'd have know this as despite going 200 -0, 166 - 34 and 200 - 0 on day two I still only managed 13th and I was a lot of MOV behind 8th (the one 7-2 player who made it).

A top 16 would have been in line with FFG's own structure for a 130 player event and given players on a 4 - 2 record at least a feeling that they were fighting for something. As the hanger bay was running alongside the final games I'm sure one more round could have easily been fitted in. The final was done and dusted before dark, it was basically 11pm finish on day 1.

Even still it was a great day and the guys did a fantastic job of running such a huge event. Everyone I spoke to had a blast and no one had a single complaint about the event other than the top 8 cut and carries over MoV. Even hats off to the players who made sure there was a great variety of lists there despite the meta predicting a bore-fest.

Top 8: 3x Scouts, 3x Palp Aces, 1x Trip Aces, 1x Swarm

For those who were watching from afar this was a VERY tough room. The Friday regional was hardcore with something like 60 Store Champ wins in the room, and then the Open was basically two rounds of fighting extra people to get into the Top 100 players and do it all again against the same hardcore room.

I think I only had one easy round all weekend, you had to play hard in every single game. Any single mistake could not only cost you a game, but with the strict cut to Top 8 at the end it might put you out entirely!

Yeah, there was a major time issue IIRC - I think they said that they had to be out of the venue by 20:00, when (for reference) the 18 player regional on Friday wasn't scheduled to finish until 1am.

Fitting in a top 16 or top 32 cut would have taken them way past the finish time - even as it was I doubt they got everything broken down and packed away by the deadline, the final only finished about 19:20.

Red 14 reporting in!

I managed to get in touch with Francisco Javier Fernandez (#23) to get his complete list. Here you go:

Dash with Outrider, HLC, PtL, EU & Kanan

Lothal Rebel with Hera, Leebo, ABT & FCS

I am still the only player to nab 45 points in Swiss in one of these events?

You were 7-1 going into the last game? It almost looks like an ID could have got you in but if that put you and your opponent both at 36 points instead of 40/35 it certainly could have been a bubble you didn't want to be sitting on especially when three of the 35 point players ended up with more MoV than you had.

It looks to me like there were just two games that had IDs accounting for the 41, 37, and 36 scores. Looks like Brian ended up 7-0-2 although drawing with 2 games left could have been a big risk.

Corran - PTL + Adv. Sen. + R2-D2 + Engine

Gold Sqd. - TLT + R3-A2

Gold Sqd. - TLT

There was an ID at the table next to me between two 4-0 players in the 5th round. Both fortressed, neither wanted to attack first so they called it a day.

That's a bit ballsy although if neither wanted to make the first move it is somewhat logical. If there was a cut in Swiss at 6 rounds it may make that a bit easier but that does seem early for an event that looks like it did 9 rounds of swiss.

wow, is my idea or the hightest rebel was 20th?

Justin Walsh (#19) here. I ran:

Soontir Fel + Push + RGT + Targeting Computer + Thrusters

Inquisitor + Push + TIE/v1 + Prockets + Thrusters

Palpatine + Shuttle

(97)

Great event, new friends. Couldn't ask for more :)

I'm not sure if you're referring to the same people, but there was one table in the 2nd round where this occurred.

One player was flying Triple Jumpmasters and performed 1-Turns into himself in the corner for 10+ turns straight. The other player was flying Palp Aces and after some initial approaches, decided it was clearly suicide to fly into that so began to self-bump and fortress himself in protest. Draw was offered and he accepted, but clearly did not want to. Ultimately it hurts both players. Because of the brutality of the cut, it means you need to win every single game in order to qualify.

Triple Jump player went 2-3 and dropped. Ace player went 7-1-1 and ended up 30th. Was awful to see, because he was essentially screwed out of being able to make the cut by the Jump player, who clearly didn't care enough to even continue playing the whole day through. Really lame.

Taking the ID wasn't great With the brutal cut it was pretty well known in advance that a draw was as good as a loss so there was minimal value in IDing. He should have pressed the attack, even if he felt it was a bad scenario it was better to at least try and win.
