The Value of Pilot Skill

By BlueMusketeer28, in X-Wing

Toward the end of a match, I had three damaged ships v Poe regening shields and had a one hit, three crits roll and he still cleaned me out. That cardboard counts for something.

Having the first shot and the kind of dice a top pilot has is a mighty fine advantage in whittling down large numbers of less "empowered" fighters.

I like running an ace with generic swarm. Maybe with a complimentary mid ps pilot.

I try to mix it up; I like the high skill guys/gals, but there's just something about a swarm of TIEs screaming toward the enemy.

I like doing a couple of high tier or maybe just one with lots of back up.

With a 3 to 1 ship advantage Poe probably shouldn't be getting many actions if he's stuck on greens trying to regen shields with R2-D2. If you're rolling a bunch of shuttles or HWKs it would make it hard to throw blocks but most other ships should have a good chance of forcing a bump most turns.

You're right. Two of my ships were close to dead but instead of flying over asteroids (duh!), I should have used one to block him. And that roll I mentioned had him another decent roll from going down. There's pilot skill and then there's player pilot skill, and I'm still learning. It's why I enjoy reading the forum.

A flock of TIE fighters with an Ace in the lead feels appropriately characterful too.

I've played swarms and I like it. Blocking is an art form (one I cheerfully admit to not having mastered) and there is a lot to be said for expendable ships....

The big thing that the swarm at Yavin had was a high PS/low PS mix - being able to move before (and block) contracted scouts, but also being able to shoot before them with a big chunk of his firepower. The millimetre-perfect avoiding range 3 then powering to range 1 was impressive too, of course.
