Middy's simple repaints & mods

By ianmiddy, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Scummy....REAL SCUMMY.

Loving everything in here, and previous to starting my scum cartel, you brought a lot of inspiration to me to go forward.

Keep up the great work!

Cheers ;) - my "scum" inspiration came from the likes of JBR7 and Barry H, so glad to pass along a little of the same - there is some incredible talent residing in this sub-forum!

Not sure if 3D printing & I are gonna be good friends  - have finally got my daV jr printing reliably, and had some success with smaller stuff like greeblies, AT-ST's and the above tug, but then decided to try a two-part YT-1000 - first half ok on Sat, after 5hrs, and set the 2nd half printing yesterday - 3½ hrs into the 5+hr print, the filament spool was 'cross-wound' and so the whole thing jammed-up, made horrible noises and I had the devils own job freeing it up...lots of wasted filament, and the x-axis movement now sounds a bit rough :(

...have set it going again this morning, but if it doesn't work this time think I will curb my ambitions a bit & stick to just producing small detail parts etc

Whilst its printing, I can at least get on with the Eravana Jr detailing -_-

Latest addition to the scum freighter fleet, a 3d-print YT-1000, the "Moxxar Starlight" (yeah, running out of decent names here  ), complete with MFA turret pointer :)

Think the larger models suit home-printing more than the smaller...the 'stepping' of the layers isn't so objectionable - think only the docking rings look poor, and the ones on the passageways maybe even add to the appearance.

(I looked into Force Majeure's Ethyl Acetate trick above some more, but it involves building a vapour bath and seems like a lot of work...and the XTC-3D self-leveling liquid filler/finisher costs as much for shipping as for the stuff itself :( )

Still not sure about the paint scheme, but it kinda matches my Gozanti, and so I've given it the same skull marking for Teemo the Hutt's fleet

Got a Ghtroc 690 printed and waiting 'tidyiing' (it's actually a 720, but my print bed isn't large enough for that, so I'm making out it's the one Rey salvaged  ), a YT-2000 which is currently 2/3rds through a 12+hr print...and the file for an Ebon Hawk - when I get another reel of filament!

Comments/criticisms much appreciated ;)

Looking good Ian. I like how it actually fits on the base unlike some of the larger ships (I'm looking at you VCX).

Latest additions to the 3d-printed fleet, awaiting painting:

Will have to come up with something a bit more colourful than greys, this time!

Is that a tortoise?

Got most of the ships that I fancied 3d-printing done, and ready for painting...have decided to go with one of Barry's colour scheme suggestions for the Eravana Jr, but waiting on some paint & masking-tape to be delivered...what to do?

Could finish up some of the smaller ships that are in various stages of painting, but decided to challenge myself a bit  - had read through tjkopena's excellent Tinkercad tutorial (see https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/230374-gr-75-cargo-pod-tokens/ ), so decided to have a try with it...I did engineering drawing at school 40yrs ago, but have never managed to come to grips with CAD programs, 2D or 3D

I'd always intended that the Eravana Jr should be able to have a conventional cargo midsection as well as the container-frame, so that's what I tried - less than 48hrs later, here are the results:

95% 3d-printed, just some plastikard strips for edging...I've no doubt that Barry or Macross could achieve much better in plastikard in much less time, but it's satisfying all the same to try something new and be happy with the results...and no swearing trying to get 'card edges to mate and stay together, :)

May manage to get it undercoated tomorrow, and ready for the weekend when [hopefully] paint & tape turn up, and I can finally get on with painting all the jr components

I was so happy with how I got on, that I've printed a bridge for my Decimator/Raider homebrew I've had sitting going nowhere for months

Oh, big thank-you as well to Herowannabe for his 3D HotAC tiles - I've been using them resized & reshaped for panelling on both models ;)

Looks kind of like a space limousine!

Just as long as it doesn't look too much like this  ;) :

Old Shuttle:

New Shuttle:

DSC02042.jpg

Unfortunately, I had to cheat and attack the 3d-print with razor saw & files, as my 3d file kept getting corrupted when I tried to upload it to Tinkercad to remove the sections for it to fit in the dock area :(

I'll maybe try installing the XYZ editing software [only using their slicer at the moment], and see if that offers any more joy

...and yes, finally getting some paint down on the Eravana Jr

Edited by ianmiddy

Wowzers!! That shuttle is looking great, Ian. I'm glad to see you got something worked out with the printing and it fits right into the VCX very well.

(On the graffiti thing, my reductions haven't printed out well at all with the decal paper, I'll keep you posted)

Clear skies, John.

Makes me wonder if they're going to make this as an official expansions somewhere down the line. Probably not for a looong time if ever.

Looks-wise, I like it. Makes the Ghost look like it has a tail like an airplane.

This makes me feel much better about how mine looks  :

Think I am happy to wait for Mel [or FFG] to produce the Rebels-modified version in the fullness of time :D , ;)

Compare these two images:

Phantom%202_zps4w918ir7.jpeg

Then new Phantom is smaller, right? (At least the tail is.) And it's been heavily modified.

As someone in the Rebels thread suggested, looks like Sabine has used Ezra's lightsabre like an angle-grinder on the tail :D

I can handle that, and the wing-extensions to take the swivel-cannon, and the floor-hatch for docking...but I still think the changes to the cockpit glass are a bit too much, they smack of a pretty major structural/equipment/cockpit-layout mod to me

EDIT: Also, both the vignette's showing the docked shuttle in the above pics are way off scale - according to the Rebels Wiki, the shuttle/PhantomII is almost 1/3 the length of the Ghost

Edited by ianmiddy

The cockpit glass and astromech slot seem like they'd be too difficult to easily swap out. The Rebels must be very well funded after all.

I haven't searched for it, but I'd like to find the reference image for the Phantom. This new shuttle seems a lot roomier than the old one.

Here's what little I could dig up:

Phantom%201_zpsb9ug4ba7.jpeg

Phantom%200_zpsg8n6ehd2.jpeg

Phantom%201.5_zpswsyiskqz.jpeg

I guess there's room in there after all...?

Edited by Force Majeure

I think the II may be a bit roomier, as it looks a little wider [there are pics of Sabine & Ezra side-by-side on the exit ramp]...don't know if there's been any cockpit scenes yet, but can't really see it being able to fit two seats there

...it's also longer, and both noses seem in proportion, so the extra length appears to be in the cabin...the cutaway above suggests 8 passengers, but knees would be cosy :D think the II might seat the same or a couple more, but with more legroom, or space for luggage ;)

Hey Ian.......I'm going to be keeping a close eye on this one !

I didn't even know what the new shuttle for the Ghost was until I had seen your photos.

bit slow on Rebels here in the UK.

Looking forward to seeing how you progress.

how many Ghost's have you bought now........must be a few

All the best,

Barry.

Yeah, it gets a bit frustrating seeing all the posts about Rebels here, and stuff on the web...and knowing the DVD for this season probably won't be out until summer in the UK :(

Shuttles [one 'complete', one cut to fit the Ghost] are painted in the same colours as the Cargo-Ghost-conversion - went with Olive Green & Greys per your suggestion - typically, I managed to amend the 3d-file after I'd finished doing the saw & knife work to get the docked one to fit...oh well  ...but it unfortunately doesn't make a good basis for the Rebels Phantom II as they've made the tail a lot slimmer than the ones from the films - when I tried cutting the tail down in height, it looked way too 'stumpy' :( ...and I'm not that good with TinkerCAD yet to slim the 3d models tail down

Only 3 Ghosts ;) - an out-of-the-box [i always like to keep one original], the tail-turret conversion, and the split one that can take either the cargo or container centre-sections - that one is almost finished painting, just need to matte the front/back/cargo, and dirty-up and matte the container section...all the containers/cargos are painted and logo'd / graffiti'd ready to go on it.

Lots more waiting paint, Pursuer-class enforcement ship will probably be the first to come ;)

Hearing about what's coming almost makes it feel like Christmas...

Almost. It's been about 90 F/32 C out here in southern California. In NOVEMBER.

I'd much prefer "cooler" temperatures in the 50-60s F/10-15 C, but whatcha' going to do?

Inspired by Barry's z95->Viper conversion, I started thinking about BSG ships as well

...but with me, of course, it has to be freighters

So here's my homage to the wonderful "Colonial Movers - We Move Anywhere":

DSC02049.jpg

DSC02051.jpg

I've changed the layout from the original 2x long containers to 3x short ones, as that's what I've been using recently...the 3D model by marian87 was downloaded from cgtrader, and then I chopped the nose & tail sections in Tinkercad, printed and joined them with a 10mm tube - then made a shoulder to support the containers in Tinker, printed nine and added magnets to hold the containers. One thing I forgot about was how to mount it on a stand  - will probably have to have a container permanently fixed to the middle-bottom position, and put one on that...

The original was a massive ship [one of the containers held a squadron of Vipers, apparently] - but I'm happy having mine as a small intra-system junker, maybe even automated as you'd probably have to crawl along between the nose & tail sections!

Primer on this morning, and will decide on a paint scheme to finish later in the week :)

Ohhh I like this.

Needs a couple of my Vipers running protection escort next to it.

Be good to see photos when the front and aft sections are painted.

Think I may build a transporter too.

Not so much to use in the game.

Just as a model to pose other models with.

I really do like your Transporters

All the best.

Barry.

My brobots would be perfect for loading and unloading that thing!

Very cool!
