Middy's simple repaints & mods

By ianmiddy, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

As the preferred approach seems to be to have dedicated, growing threads, rather than ones for individual ships, I'll collect some I've posted previously in the old repaint thread and elsewhere into this one...hope that's OK

Freighters and the like:

The obligatory Kath S:

...and I couldn't resist doing a Checker Cab ;) :

...and today's addition, a slightly lazy G1-A tribute to the Hind helicopter - " That's not a cannon - THIS IS A CANNON ! " ;) :

Still a WIP, here's my take on a cobbled-together spacetug similar to the TFA QuadJumper, used for shifting small container loads from orbit to planetside...

...I had the K-wing body left over after doing one of the popular G1-A + K-Wing "A10 Warthog" conversions, and this is what I came up with to make use of it after getting the containers for my Gozanti scum freighter.

Maybe usable for a mission scenario where pirates ambush an unloading freighter and have to deal with a local militia force guarding it ???

Nice work on the Kihraxz. Can you please share the colors you used to match the Z-95s? I am terrible at matching colors.

Think it was a Vallejo Ivory, with a verrrry thin nuln oil wash...but it was [i think] my third attempt to try & get a decent match, and I'm still not really happy with it !

In all honesty, I'm hoping they do a Scum Aces pack with a Black Sun Talonbane in white

Thanks for sharing! I have been looking for what people have used. I agree that it would be great if they did a black sun repaint for that model.

I found this thread that states they mixed Ceramite and Screaming skull.

https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/136424-matching-the-scum-z95-off-white-with-citadel-paints/

"The off white is 3 parts Ceramic White, 1 part Screaming Skull, wwith a thin layer (watered down) of Nuln Oil over the top, and a lot of extra Nuln Oil in the recessed areas (as that's how FFG's models look).

Abaddon Black matched the black areas fine, but I added some very very very dark brown (Abaddon Black mixed with a tiny small of one of the browns) to look like burn around the engines.

The dry brushing is Longbeard Grey."

I also saw a comment on Reddit:

I didn't bother stripping the ship before I started, instead I just worked over the existing paintjob, as the brown was a good base for what I wanted to do.

I started out by picking out all of the panels in a pale bone colour (I was using the old Citadel Dheneb Stone, but they've changed to a new line of paints since I bought it, I'm not sure what the equivalent would be now.)

With the panels picked out, I gave it a quick black wash. This left it pretty murky looking, so I went over again with the bone, but a little less thoroughly, keeping toward the edges of panels and being less fussy about obscured details.

Then it got a final highlight with a 50/50 white/bone mix, just along the edges of panels.

The black panels literally are flat colours at the moment, the same with the freehand logo.

Certainly one of my early [mistaken] attempts used a Tamiya White and a less thin Nuln oil wash, that just looked a total mess!

...I've already picked up many suggestions on methods to achieve subtle colour differentiation since joining this forum...[some] techniques and materials have certainly changed since I last did any model painting in the 70's ;)

Nearly finished my scum Gozanti, after a number of delays and rethinks...thanks to many, particularly Stoneface, here:

https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/221166-gozanti-scum-freighter-need-paint-inspiration/?p=2239009

for painting inspiration...I ended up combining the carrier & freighter and going with a weathered grey scheme (abandoned any markings except for a skull or two), and will do a wing-chop with #3 as a pure freighter.
Anyway, herewith Teemo the Hutt's salvaged Gozanti Cruiser, complete with his small fleet of similarly salvaged, repaired or 'acquired' escort TIE fighters...setting out with its first cargo run carrying container-loads of Ryll from his mines on Ryloth.

The docking clamps, dual laser turrets and broadcast array are nice & shiny-new, being recent purchases from an unnamed Imperial source [that's my excuse - want to keep them 'clean' so that they can still be used as spares on my Imperial model].
Still need to come up with some markings for the containers [magnetised, so they can be swapped around], and have another 16 to paint and weather for a 'mini-Eravana' project that I'll soon be starting, so the shipping-line discussions in the above thread will still be of value.
Cheers.

Have to have one say "Colonial Movers - We Move Anywhere".

Been there, done that, :D ;) :

One of my earliest paintjobs...I may revisit and do it again, especially the windows - I liked the effect when I saw others use it, but mine never looked as good :(

...and it wasn't until after I'd done all the containers that I realised...they really needed to be in Aurebesh! :o

Also, to be honest, I really don't like the Xizor-style containers, but they are in the game as tokens...prefer the regular rectangular shapes, so glad that's what were used in Rebels and TFA

LOVING THIS

Ian,

Looks fantastic. where do you get those small containers from ?

are they resin parts, railway accessories or scratch built.

as they look great and work really well with your models.

and the other great thing about this painting forum and viewing other's work like yourself.

its giving me some good ideas ! :D

Well done Ian,

All the best,

Barry.

Hi Barry

N-Gauge plastic railway accessories, by Graham Farish (#379-352A):

Graham-Farish-379-352A-N-Gauge-20ft-Cont

I figure that as 20ft containers at 1/160 scale, in x-wing that equates to just over 30ft, so in between the two regular lengths we use...

Also, looking at this from Rebels:

imperial-cargo-ship_40565cbb.jpeg?region

...they seem about right - also, there seem to be similar proportioned ones on the images of the Eravana from TFA.

They aren't ridiculously expensive - I did look into those ones that you used on your Ghost, but I could get 8x20ft's for about the same price I saw the tank supplies kit on eBay  ...and not having done much modelling for 20+ yrs now, I no longer have much in the way of a parts bin :(

I've ordered some other, smaller, crates & drum accessories to see how they work out alongside these 20ft's on the Eravana-style ship I want to try next.

You can get some quite good print-fold-glue card containers, which I might use if I get around to trying the ship above, as using the plastic ones would work out a bit expensive for 150+

Cheers

Ian

Arrrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!!

I'm getting so frustrated ! I've had a trapped nerve in my neck for the past 3wks and have lost all fine control of my right hand, and get stabbing pains in my arm if I sit for any length of time...

...and I've got so many projects I could be getting on with, otherwise:

Mel's Sorosuub 3000
Starviper moveable wings
M3A conversion
Decimator > Raider homebrew
Scum Hutt GR75
YT1300 homebrew
JM5K cargo conversion
Nashtah Pup
Eravana Jr / VCX-Freighter + QuadJumper homebrew
Firespray mod [based on Barry H's changes to the main body]
...and still not finished my Scum Gozanti above.
I know it's a First World / minor problem compared to what so many others are living with...but...
arrrrrrgggghhhh! :(
At least I can still enjoy looking at everyone else's work  ;)

Nothing minor about nerve issues :( , don't push it too quickly and get better soon. (dealing with nerve damage in my right/dominant arm for over 3 years now, good thing I work with my hands for a living! )

This forum is as bad as Facebook, in that for some things you really want a "dislike" button [although maybe not the best name for trying to express an 'unhappy' sentiment]...I've been told mine could take another 4-8 weeks to recover, but to be prepared that my hand might not return to full use  , so hoping I don't suffer as you have :(

...ah well, worse things happen at sea in the Outer Rim ;)

Cool idea, nice wip pic. How are you going ot paint the body of the ship? Yellow black warning patterns on grey or brown?

with to make use of it after getting the containers for my Gozanti scum freighter.

I'd left it a basic grey, as still deciding on a 'shipping company' scheme that I might use for several ships...but I really like that hazardous/warning idea...excellent, thanks for the inspiration! ;)

The container gozanti is brilliant. It really looks the part. The shinier accessories only add to the effect!

Cheers! ;) Still haven't managed to put any markings on the containers...have decals ready, but my hand control just isn't up to the fine positioning they require at the moment...hopefully in a week or two...

...so I've started work on my "Eravana Jr" bulk freighter, doing the less-critical component work, as any detailing or painting's also out of the question.

Not to downplay your other alters but the taxi mist hunter is by far the best. Reminds me of the Fifth Element =p. Is the checker pattern a decal?

Cheers...yes, afraid so, decal it is - no way my hand has ever been steady enough to paint that, especially these days!

Quite pleased with it, as it was an experiment in using any acrylic pen to do the yellow straight over the top of the factory paint scheme, and also the use of the home-produced decals.

Finally managed to do some work despite the problems with my hand...

...a bit beyond some of the previous mods, following some discussions about freighter-based scenarios:

The "Eravana Jr"...or, what to do with a 3rd VCX-100  still VERY much a WIP!

Fairly normal VCX, sans dorsal turret, and looking a bit odd about the middle:

IMG_3406.jpg

Whoops...a tale of two halves:

IMG_3407.jpg

New mid-section, bare-bones...still needs a LOT of greebles!

IMG_3411.jpg

Loaded up...need a few more small containers/crates for the lower deck, and all those [magnetised] containers will need painting in various owner liveries!

IMG_3413.jpg

Long way to go, but I thought if I didn't post some interim shots now, I'd probably forget to take any at all

(Oh, will probably look to do a more conventional "cargo-bay" mid-section as well, so it's kinda like the expanded versions of the Ghtroc 720 ;) )

Cheers...

This is going to be amazing!

Looking good!

Are you transporting gundarks or rathtars on that ship?

Looking good!

Are you transporting gundarks or rathtars on that ship?

Unfortunately it's not licensed to carry livestock, as it doesn't have a central atmospheric processing hub like its larger counterpart...and the Rathtar containment vessels are too large for its magnetic clamps anyway...

...there may, however, be some Aldo Spachian comet dust, Kiirium ingots and possibly illegal relics stolen from Nantoon in some of the containers ;)
