Storage for large fleet

By JD0GE, in X-Wing

I live in the UK and haven't really found any storage solutions that fit what I've got, and my collection seems to have grown considerably... I don't want to spend too much more than about £50 (unrealistic maybe?) on cases

The current collection:

1 Core 1

1 Core 2

2 Y wing

1 HWK-290

2 Most Wanted

1 T-70

2 TIE/FO

1 Z-95

2 K-wing

1 Rebel Aces

1 Imperial Aces

3 B-wing

1 X-wing

1 Starviper

2 Khiraxz

1 TIE phantom

2 TIE Defender

1 TIE Bomber

1 Firespray-31

1 Jumpmaster5000

1 Rebel transport (don't need storage for transport, only X)

1 YV-666

(Don't have yet, but probably will)

1 Heroes of the resistance

1 YT-1300

Another Jumpmaster5000

1 lancer class pursuit ship (wave 9 large base)

8 or so small ships

I actually like the 40-fig large Chessex boxes:

http://www.chessex.com/figure%20boxes/Figure_Storage_Boxes.htm

Most of the small ships fit in one pre-cut slot; certain others fit in a double-slot cut btn 2 standard slots (y-wing, bomber, starviper). Many large ships fit (YT-2400, 1300, Decimator) in custom cut holes.

The other bigger ships (YV-666, Ghost) do need something else.

I have a large fleet. It's not the biggest but it does present storage problems. (My fleet is in my sig)

I have all my upgrade cards in a 2" binder with plastic card sheets (not pictured here).

I have 2 Plano bags with cases; my green "play" case where I put my play case with the squad I want to run for a tournament and doubles as my Scum case. My orange case has my Rebel and Empire fleets with all my ship cards in it. I have my huge ships in hardcase and foam, grey for Empire and red for Rebel. My fleet storage looks like this:

Green and Orange cases.

Green case has: Play case; Scum ship case; Scum dial/base case; debris/bombs and number tokens with extra TL's. Note: the YV-666 I had to remove the wings to fit in this case.

My play case has my play tokens in it.

My orange case has: Rebel ships; Rebel dials/bases/stands; Empire ships; Empire dials/bases/stands; Large ships; All ship cards.

Hardcases: Grey has both Empire huge ships; Red has both Rebel huge ships (top foam hides bases/ruler and is removed for this picture).

Where did you find the small token case, Sergovan? That would help with the organization of my collection quite a bit. And to add my opinion to the OP's question, I have a Plano 732 tackle box. It still holds all of my ships at this point though my space is beginning to run out. The only ship that doesn't fit in the smaller trays is the VCX-100 but I keep it loose in the top of the case insulated by my extra cards and card sleeves (probably gonna print off a microhangar for it soon). My collection is in my signature to give you an idea of everything it holds, though I store my epic ships separate as I don't actually play epic. The case comes with three larger trays which I use for each individual faction's ships and maneuver dials and two smaller trays that I currently use for tokens and ship bases, though I'm trying to reorganize those trays at the moment. The 732 costs ~$40-50 on Amazon and comes with everything you need.

The problem with a lot of these bespoke solutions - lovely though they are - is that they have a tendency to become obsolete as your collection expands and new ships get released

So I just use Stanley Sortmaster boxes - Dremel out the compartments, order some packaging foam cut to size from an internet retailer, cut the inserts out by hand - costs about £10 for the box and £5 for the foam

If I fill a box I just get another one and / or reorganize the ones I've got

I have one of the Black & Decker compartment cases, but then added two of these as they're half the price and almost as good [don't have as many small compartments as the B&D]:

One for each faction - Decimator will fit in the space of two large trays, Falcon in the corner spaces by the handle, YT-2400 and Jumps in a large tray - YV will also fit in if the tail/wing sections are removed - up to 4 Z95's in a small tray or a single TIE and similar combos for others. Unfortunately the Ghost is a bit too deep, so may have to consider what I mention below for those...

I'm considering one or two of these for Epic stuff:

I use 3 boxes currently, 1 double sided Plano (w/double lid) holds most of my fleet. 1 single sided Plano #5231, holds all my tokens, templates and 2 100pt squads (my tourney box). And a heavy duty plastic tool box for my Epic & a few large ships.Plus I have 2 binders that hold pilot cards and upgrade cards (using the rigid two inch coin pages). But now I need more space... probably gonna get another double sided plano,

The two sided, double lid Planos (Plano model #3952)are awesome because I place all my Dials and Tiles on the outside and it's super easy to find and sort.

Those Stanley Deep organisers should be fine for epic ships - similar dimensions to the one for my epics I use except about 1cm deeper - so you should be able to fit the Tantive without having to remove the radar dish

Plano boxes look great - but they seem to be way cheaper on the left side of the atlantic - really hard to find them for a good price over here

Where did you find the small token case, Sergovan? That would help with the organization of my collection quite a bit. .

It is a Craftmate Lockables. I got mine at Micheals here in Ottawa. They are normally used for storing beads but work great for game tokens. They come in single, double, and larger sizes. I found the link for a double but check your local hobby/craft store for them.

If you can find a good place for Plano in the UK. The 3700 series deep cures all that ails.

A nice stack.

I have been personally leaning towards battlefoam, both for their amazing bags and custom foam template maker. VERY expensive though and US made so no import tax. Being on that side of the ocean Feldher and KR Multi Case are both good options with pros and cons. Import tariffs will rob you blind though, it doubles the cost of the European cases for me. Whatever you decide to get make sure it's as close to local as you can get.

KR Multicases are excellent, but expensive if you go for the aluminium cases. Their staff are very helpful and can give good advice, including custom foam from other game sytems which they stock and can be adapted to fit your exact fleet if their standard X-Wing foam isn't what you want.

1st post. Hello, folks.

Found one on Amazon for $4. Thanks!

I've been thinking about redoing my storage recently. Up until W8, I had everything (non epic) in a tool box from Home Depot with some pluck foam:

But as you can see, it was pretty much maxed out after W7 (I've been using it since W3, so it had a long life). I currently have all of my Imps and Scum in SirWalliBald MicroHangers, which has opened enough space for my initial W8 purchase of rebels. But then I had to go and take advantage of CSI's sale. So now I think I need to either put the Rebels in it or move to something more friendly to the MicroHangers. Any thoughts on what that would be?

I live in the UK and haven't really found any storage solutions that fit what I've got

I've tried looking at stuff in the UK before as this question has come up, but it's hard to use just Google to see. Isn't there some affordable tackle box for fishing that people use? That's all Plano is. I'd think someone would've found a cheap method already. It's hard to imagine there isn't one in the UK.

Any pill container can be used. All the elderly in the US need to have little plastic containers to tell them what day to take what medicine. They are usually very cheap. Look in a drug store.

The 3700 series deep cures all that ails.

How do you transport your 3700? I wish there was a plastic case that carried them. I love the 3700. but moving them around is hard. I've got 2 for my epic and I could fit all my large based in another (I think). If I had an easy way to carry three 3700's around, I'd be fine.

Maybe those Plano bags? Or any cheap duffle?

Oh, and he said under $50. That negates that answer. :)
