AAR: Raleigh Regional Tournament

By Caldias, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi all,

So my FLGS got the Regional for Armada and I decided that hey, I guess I'll drive the whole 15 minutes and participate. We ended up having 19 total, with two people using their byes. I decided to hang on to my bye as I plan on participating in the Atlanta regional and probably wouldn't mind the break after a 5.5 hour drive. My list was:

Mothma-Gump Shrimp Company

CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)

Locally I had a lot of luck with this list, even going second player, depending on the fleet. We had a bunch of people roll in from Virginia, all of which were awesome dudes, and I think six of our local players made it out for this one.

Game 1:

My first game was against a really cool guy from Virginia, and his name escapes me, but he was super awesome. He was rolling 2 SW7 CR90s and 1 TRC90 with an Assault MC80 and 4 A Wings along with 2 YT-2400s. He was running Rieekan. I elected to go first and chose Advanced Gunnery, which was a hard learned lesson!

He deployment delayed and put down the MC80 last, as one is wont to do. I tried to place my 30s in a way that I could get to his MC80 anywhere he put it, which meant spreading out. I should have slowed it down and come at him with all my 30s at once, but I'm not sure if that would've mattered. He played really well and I only got one good hit on his 80. I took out 2 CR90s and he killed everything but Mon Mothma, which ended the game in a 9-1 in his favor. Really cool guy, and a well played game.

Game 2:

Again, the name escapes me, but he was another cool dude from Virginia. He had an ISDII, a Victory II, and Demolisher with some TIEs and a TIE Advanced with Motti. This time I played it safe and picked Dangerous Territory.

Mon Mothma was supposed to get two tokens, but only ended up getting one and kept barely missing the other obstacle. My MC30s were able to focus a big more this time, and over the course of the game brought down Demolisher and the Victory. The ISD got pounded on but flew away at speed 3 and I couldn't get more than 5 cards on her. I lost a CR90 and my opponent racked up 4 tokens, making me the winner with a 7-3.

Game 3:

My final opponent was Sean, also from Virginia. He was really cool and had an AFMK II, Yavaris, a CR90, and an MC30 with a mix of really amazingly painted squadrons. I picked his Hyperspace Assualt mission and he chose Yavaris with two B-Wings and Luke.

I came out pretty aggressive, going speed 4 to get Foresight within black range in Turn 1. Lando and Admonition kind of chilled in the back some, waiting for other stuff to move. Yavaris popped in on turn 2, and I had a sweet shot with Foresight on the AFMK II, so I opted to take that instead of moving with Admonition or Lando, both of which were threatened by Yavaris' squadrons. I think he went with his AFMKII next, which pounded on Lando, so I scooted Lando to safety and let Admonition soak up squadron damage, which he did. In the end his Yavaris was all he had ship-wise left with one hull away from death, and Mon Mothma ended up being my only casualty, which was dumb of me, since I could have moved her out of Yavaris squadron range, but tried to go for the clutch play by having Foresight go first in blue range. Great game, 8-2 for me.

All in all, great games, great opponents. I learned a hard lesson about Advanced Gunnery, which is don't get cute at tournaments. I've had success with it in the past in casual settings, but I learned now that with an MC80 it really just does too much for that ship, too much of a risk, especially if I get out deployed. I should've picked Intel Sweep in hindsight. But I had a blast and am looking forward to doing my last regional in Marrietta, and then on to Worlds. I really love this game! And am looking forward to that Speed 12 Liberty for 32 points.

I should also mention that pt106 won this one, and was also a super cool dude. Came all the way from Boston to play some Armada with us!

I'll go ahead and throw in.

B-Wing Ballas
Author: wufame

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 400/400

Commander: General Rieekan

Assault Objective: Precision Strike
Defense Objective: Contested Outpost
Navigation Objective: Superior Positions

Assault Frigate Mark II B (72 points)
- Adar Tallon ( 10 points)
- Boosted Comms ( 4 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)

[ flagship ] Assault Frigate Mark II B (72 points)
- General Rieekan ( 30 points)
- Raymus Antilles ( 7 points)
- Boosted Comms ( 4 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)
- Yavaris ( 5 points)
- Veteran Captain ( 3 points)

3 B-Wing Squadrons ( 42 points)
2 A-Wing Squadrons ( 22 points)
3 X-Wing Squadrons ( 39 points)
1 Jan Ors ( 19 points)

Game 1: Played Overdawg on Precision strike. He was running 3 Glads and a Fireball w/Boba. We more or less duked it out with squadrons. I came out ahead because I had more, but Overdawg was pretty clever and I really liked his list. I kept Yavaris on the outside hoping to sacrifice it to Demo, which ended up being the case. In exchange, I killed demo. Game ended 6-4 with an MOV of 59 I think. While we were waiting for everyone to wrap up, I mentioned to Overdawg that it would have actually been 7-3 because I forgot to take my token for the only faceup I dealt all game. He agreed and was a total bro and went with me to correct the score.

Game 2: I played our local store champion whom always kicks my butt. He was running an MC80, AF2, 5 Xs, 3 Scurrgs, and Jan. Very similar lists and playstyles but he just plays it so much better. We did Superior Position and he ended up beating me 8-2. His squadron game was on point and it lured me into too many mistakes. He later gave me friendly advice that I should have been more aggressive wth Yavaris. Not sure I agree, but he's better than me, so his opinion might mean more. He later went on to play pt106 at the top table.

Game 3: Played another local guy here. He was running a Mothma Swarm. We played Sup. Positions. 2 MC30s, 2 Corvette As w/TRCs and 2 Corvette Bs. I went with a similar strategy as Game 1 where I put Yavaris on the outside trying to sacrifice it up to the death god APT while my AF2s stayed at range controlling squadrons. It worked alright and Yav was able to take an MC30 and a corvette down with her. He later went on to pop Rieekan while I went on to kill 2 more of his corvettes. As far as ships destroyed went, we were pretty close point-wise, but I had racked up 16 objective tokens by the end of the game and came out with a 9-1.

I ended the tournament with 18 points. As a measure for how tight the 18-20 grouping was, the store champ (who I played in round 2) ended the tourney with 19 points, just one more than me. He got 6th place overall and I got 10th.

Great reports gents thanks for posting!

Question - seeing heavy use of Riekaan, which I still havent quite got my head around.... How many instances do you think you saw where his ability counted?

I made use of Rieekan every game I played because it was more or less my strategy to lose Yav. It's why I didn't put Raymus on her. Whats the point if you only expect her to live to round 3 or 4. She's a perfect sacrifice. Only worth 65 points, surprisingly resilient enough to hopefully slow down your enemy, and too powerful to ignore. With Rieekan, even when she dies, she's still gonna bite back. It's a nice catch 22 for your opponent. They can't ignore her, and by attacking her they aren't attacking your more expensive ships.

The way I feel about Rieekan is basically this. When you lose a ship or Jan, he's amazing. When you don't, why do you care, you are likely winning.

Edited by WuFame

That is definitely hard to say. Rieekan really just prolongs the inevitable, so the natural counter to him is going 2nd or going 1st and killing stuff in a way to which the ship doesn't get optimal shots after it is killed. Fire Lanes and Contested Outpost favor Rieekan, Precision Strike and Superior Positions are terrible for Rieekan.

Yeah that last point is true. I took a pretty heavy gamble bringing Precision Strike and Sup Positions with Rieekan. I was hoping to control the squadron game well enough that my opponents wouldn't be tossing extra damage on my "dead" ships.

That's true, Superior Positions pretty well worked out for you in that last game.

Such a fun event and all you NCs blokes (Cal and Wu especially) are not only really good players but really good people. It is a pleasure playing the game whether I win or lose when you get to meet and play against good people.

Thanks man! You were also a fantastic dude. Glad I got to chill with you guys.

Thanks for the Riekaan thoughts gents.

My Raleigh AAR:

I ran:

AF Mk II B + Rieekan + Gunnery Team + Boosted Comms

AF MK II B + XI7 + Paragon

TRCVette + Raymus + Tantive IV

TRCVette

7x A-Wings

1x HWK

First game was against fellow Steve's Ackbar list with a TRCVette, an AF Mk IIB, and 2 MC30s, along with 6 A-Wings. He chose my Fire Lanes. I racked them up at first, but he flew very well and got in amongst them pretty well. In the end, he had me by 17 points, so 5-5 for round 1. It was a super fun game, and even though the 5-5 result probably knocked us both out of the running, I had such a good time in that game, it didn't even matter.

Second game was against Andrew, who rode down with me and frequently features on my stream. He was rocking an ISD II, Demo, 2 Raiders, and 3 Interceptors + Howlrunner. He chose my Advanced Gunnery. He completely gutted my A-Wings, and honestly played very very well. In fact, I just barely brought down his Motti ISD II at the very last which secured me a scant 6-4 victory. I was proud of how well Andrew played, even though it sort of sucked to drive 2.5 hours to play someone I play all the time!

My final game was against Overdawg's triple Gladiator rhymer ball that 10-0d me on my stream a few nights ago! I was pretty intimidated. He chose Fire Lanes, and I think had a stroke and forgot how that worked. His command dials probably make sense in a general game- he loaded up on tokens before speeding up for the fight, but in the end I got all 18 of the possible fire lanes tokens and took down 2 of his Gladiators. It was ugly, and I can't wait to play Jeff again cause I know he's banging his head over this one. 10-0 for this game.

In the end I had 21 points which jumped me up to 3rd. I had a blast! Great game shop, and great to hang with new and old friends.

Probably the worst game I have ever played. I learned some hard lessons there but be assured I wont make those mistakes again. I demand a rematch... gauntlet has been thrown, feet have been stamped, pouts have been made. :)

That being said I earned a renewed respect for A-Wings as I faced them in every game I played and each time they put a hurting on me.

Do you know what position your fiend Andrew finished in?

He means Madine.

I'm not sure where Madine placed, but I think he had a rough last round.

18th. I do have final standings and all round matchups captured.
