Tech Use

By Flaresnake, in X-Wing

So what is the point of weapons guidance? Does anyone use it?

if you don't own a rebel transport it's a not-bad option for poe.

Even then it is not great. Poe wants to hang onto that Focus token for defense, not spend it on offense (especially as he is PS8 or above).

It is vaguely useful on low PS T70s where pilots may not get a chance to TL often against higher PS opponents. Even then I think it is probably overcosted.

I've seen it used to good effect on Poe. A roll of "hit, focus, blank" turns into 3 hit results. In most games there's usually several rounds that Poe isn't going to be a target, especially as it gets to the end game.

Still, that works for me because I normally have Red Ace quietly tanking everything and healing it while people fixate on killing Poe. If I get to the end game and I still have Red Ace anywhere near full health then I normally have the game in the bag.

Of course Red Ace gets a Comms Relay rather than WG. ;)

Presumably because the tech slot is there to differentiate the new era ships with the old ones, showing how technologically superior to previous iterations of TIE Fighters and X-wings.

So if they decide to add the Republic and Separatists to the game as factions could we expect an Antiques upgrade? That might be kinda cool like the idea of lost technology, practices, and such.

:)

But you either have to have the EPT "Tech Redemption" or a very old astromech where they forget to do the decennial reboots, to use it on newer OT or TFA ships :)

Curious to see what the new tech does. Comms Relay is useful on most FO aces (as well as Red Ace), but I don't think I've ever seen anyone use Weapons Guidance. That one is a least a point too expensive.

I have used it and I agree that it's a point too expensive. Then again, I think the ships that can use it aren't really tournament friendly ships (low PS ships).

As a rule of thumb, upgrades that provide tokens or improve action economy seem to provide much better value than those which consume actions/tokens to employ. Even in cases where there is little/no competition for the slot, that does not make it worth taking.

i have successfully ran a list where i had a T70 generic with Kyle (HWK pilot) dumping focus tokens on him.

It felt a little spendy but i think thats more because of the T70 not because of the idea. Doubled up on focus every round, unless i needed it for defense at some point (rare thanks to BB8 repositioning, god i love that droid) which practically guaranteed my 3-4 dice between regular focus and singular blankfocus mod. Course Kyle had an Ion Turret just to help me keep a lock on the target and not get shot in the process i.e. burn a focus.

Problem is, thats burning ~70pts to use this upgrade. Even if it is effective, it leaves gaps in your strat because of generic T70 issues and the HWK is pretty much forced to always perform Focus actions (unless he stacked up a lot via moldy crow) and have Recon Specialist and be within range of thee T70, which is very predictable. When you pull it off though, especially at range1, that T70 hurts lol
