Elrath's painting

By Elrath', in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

Phew. Feels so weird to start my own painting topic but I don't feel right hijacking other people's threads anymore :)

It's been a long while since I've painted something but I bought the Bespin expansion recently and we started new campaign. And with the new heroes so I have to get them painted soon. Here's Murne Rin:

The closeups really don't do the figure justice. It looks better from the usual gaming distance. That said, I'm not 100% satisfied how it turned out. I didn't even try to match the colors perfectly but highlighting blue didn't work out like I wanted.

Oh well, Davith Elso next. Hopefully it'll work out better.

I think Verena is still the best figure I've done (without following any tutorials). Hopefully Elso will take that place.

Verena:

So, painted Davith. He came out pretty well though I could have highlighted more or alternatively, been more careful with the nuln oil as it darkened the shoulder pads maybe a tad too much.

But now I got all the heroes of our Bespin campaign painted:

Great stuff, keep it coming!

I really like the color of his light saber, nice work.

they look amazing.

keep it up

I really like the color of his light saber, nice work.

Thanks. The lightsaber was probably the one part I stressed about the most when painting the figure. All the other things went fairly well. Even the lighting effect from the lightsaber.

I considered both lightsaber painting methods Sorastro covered in his videos but I ended up using the same technique as with Diala. It's easier for me though it requires patience. I used Citadel's Green glaze (Waywatcher Green) diluted with some Lahmian medium and just applied layer after layer. I used the same wash for the lighting effect on the clothes.

ia_lightsaber_comparison.jpg

I'm fairly happy to all these lightsabers. Vader's might have been the fastest one to paint. Also, in this angle you can see the full effect of the glaze on Davith Elso's lightsaber. The bottom part of the lightsaber remained a bit too white but I didn't dare to darken it because it could have ruined the part that shows when viewing the figure on the tabletop.

Nice. Those are looking great.

For my Davith I did his lightsaber like Vader's using Moot Green as a base, and then lightening the moot green with white for the thin strip on the front, and finishing it with some Runefang Steel.

Then since I didn't have a green glaze handy, I thinned some Moot Green with Lahmian Medium and used that for the lighting effect.

I would have probably used Moot Green if I had had it. I thought I had bought it when I started painting Mak but when I got to the visor, it turned out I didn't have the paint. For the visor I mixed something equivalent from various green shades and yellow. But since the green glaze I had was pretty close to the art color, I used that. I like how you managed to paint Davith's lightsaber, RogueLieutenant. The last picture especially looks good. I didn't get the green looking that good from the back of the lightsaber.

Okay, I have been away from Imperial Assault for a long time and I've been painting other games (Runebound, Mansions of Madness) but I'm back to IA and I started tackling some of the expansion characters I haven't painted yet.

Lets start with the purple brothers here:

ISB_Infiltrators_front.jpg

ISB_Infiltrators_back.jpg

Okay, so maybe the ISB Infiltrators shouldn't wear so purple armor but the box art sort of looks that way. So I went with purple and highlighted it with Fenrisian Gray to make it more "metallic".

I painted Bossk. Sorastro covered his colors brilliantly in his Trandoshan Hunter painting tutorial. Also the white armor is too large. Those parts should be yellowish but I had misplaced the boxart so I thought they were part of the white armor. And I thought in addition to that he was wearing a dark grey undershirt or something beneath the white armor so I painted that over his shoulders too. According to the box art, that should all have been yellow. Oh well...it's done and I'm too lazy to change it.

And lastly, here are two partly painted figures I'm tackling on next. I wanted to share the photo because of the color mistake with one of them...

As you can see, Blaise is furious that I first thought his armor was some sort of modified ISB armor even though it CLEARLY is a scout armor and thus should be white. It shall be fixed.

And Obi-Wan the Grey got his face, hands and lightsaber hilt painted while I painted the ISB infiltrators.

Painted Obi Wan Kenobi. I'm really happy how he turned out though the white robe could have been more yellowish.

Verena's hair looks really good. Which colors did you use? I couldn't get my model's hair quite right.

I followed the recipe Sorastro introduced in his first Descent painting tutorial . So, I painted Verena's hair exactly like he paints Syndrael's hair.

So, base color with Screaming Skull. Wash with Agrax Earthshade and Cassandora Yellow mix (equal mix). Highlight with Screaming Skull again.

Whohoo! Finally got my Jabba's Realm stuff.

Captain Terro is almost done. Just need to add some finishing touches like a metal bridle. Also, funny how the camera loses the whiteish scales on the top. They look green on the picture. It's true that I washed them with the green wash like the rest of the figure, but in real life the top scales seem whiter.

Same with Shyla. She's still missing the base color since I'm hoping to paint all the heroes and then do the bases at the same time. Also, I think I need to retouch her hair, eyes and sword.

Looks great!

Painted Onar Koma. I'm fairly happy with how the figure turned out.

The paint job looks kinda crude but this is a closeup (the weapon highlights for the most parts). Looks a lot better from a normal gaming distance.

Paints in detail

Base colors

I painted the ragged cloth with Skrag Brown which seemed to be a really close color to the card art. The skin was weird since it seemed gray in other pictures and green in other. However since FFG art tends to fade to green in Runebound and in other Imperial Assault hero cards, I chose to go with gray.

Cloth: Skrag Brown

Skin: Stormvermin Fur

Wristband: Screaming Skull

Teeth: Rakarth Flesh (Screaming skull would be fine)

Black cloth parts: 50/50 mix Mechanicus Standard Gray, Black (I used Vallejo black)

Kneepads: Mephiston Red (these could be painted black as well. I wanted some color)

Wrist display: Mephiston Red

Guns: 50/50 mix of black and Leadbelcher.

Shades

onar_shades.jpg

Cloth, teeth, wristband: Agrax Earthshade

Skin: 2 part Nuln Oil, 1 part Athonian Camoshade to give it a slight greenish tint and turn the skin color further away from the other dark gray parts.

Dark parts and weapons: Nuln Oil

Kneepads: Carroburg Crimson

Highlights and finishing touches
Skin: Highlighted back with Stormvermin Fur, mixed in Pallid Wych Flesh in few stages

Cloth: Skrag Brown and then mixed in Screaming Skull in 3 stages. For more orange look, Fire Dragon Bright might work great.

Dark parts: First highlight with Eshin Grey. Then for further highlights, mixed in Rakarth Flesh+Administratum Gray. Again in few stages. The shoulder pad seems quite shiny in the card art.

Kneepads: Evil Sunz Scarlet for edges and top parts. Then Wild Rider Red. Then smudges with dark gray and a tint of Runefang Silver in the middle to create scratches.

Shoulderpad: Solid lines with Averland Sunset. Then mix in Flash Gitz Yellow and brighten the tone around the edges. Finally pure Flash Gitz Yellow in the top parts and edges.

Teeth: Ushabti Bone and then middle part with Screaming Skull

Wrist computer: Evil Sunz Scarlet to edges, black square in the middle for screen, white dab in the corner for glint

Guns: 50/50 mix of Runefang Silver and Fenrisian Gray. Second narrower highlight with white added into the mix.
Handgun is red in the art so I painted the center with Mephiston Red, mixed in some Runefang Steel for highlights. The sculpt doesn't quite match the character art.

Couldn't get multiple spoiler tags to work. Looks like the new forum system has some bugs.

Gamorrean Guards

gamorran_front.jpg

gamorran_back.jpg

They are not accurate representation of the box art. I wanted something more different and "orcish" I guess. The weapons I wanted light colored but now I'm sort of thinking I should have used a second wash to darken them further. Well, it's never too late for retouch.

Painting details

Base colors:

Skin for the orcish green I used: Waagh Flesh!

Skin that's more accurate to box art: Castellan Green

Red Armor: Doombull Brown

Brown armor, sandals: Steel Legion Drab

Weapon and armor: I used Platemail from Army Painter. Ironbreaker should do similar trick

Belts: Mournfang Brown

Washes

Belts, brown armor, sandals: Agrax Earthshade

Red Armor: Mix of Agrax Earthshade (about 5 parts), Carroburg Crimson (about 2 parts)

Skin for orcish green: Bieltan Green

Skin that's more accurate to box art: Athonian Camoshade

Weapons and armor variant 1 (brown armored guys): Nuln Oil

Weapons and armor variant 2 (red armored guys): Nuln Oil (2 part)+Drakenhof Nightshade (1 part) mix

Highlights and Details

Skin for orcish green: Warboss Green, then Snarsnik Green mixed in, then pure Snarksnik Green, then Nurgling Green mixed into that for brightest highlights

Skin for box art: Elysian Green, then Ogryn Camo mixed in, then pure Ogryn Camo

Nose and lips: Base color with Bugman's Glow, shade with Reikland Fleshshade, highlight with Cadian Fleshtone

Brown Armor and sandals: Lower part: Drybrush with Baneblade Brown. Upper part: Highlight with Steel Legion Drab and some Baneblade brown mixed in. Increased mix. Final highlight with tiny bit of Screaming Skull mixed in. Also used for drybrushing the lower parts on the parts that would take most light

Red Armor: Lower part: Drybrush Tuskgor Fur. Upper part: Highlight with Tuskgor Fur. Mixed in Wild Rider Red for brightest highlights

Horns and tusks: Base color with Ushabti Bone, second layer with Screaming Skull, a dab of white to the tip of the tusks and horns

Weapons: Highlight with Platemail.

Belts: Mournfang Brown. Then mixed in Deathclaw Brown in 3 stages.

Base: Roughly 60/40 mix of Castellan Green and Ironbreaker
